who here has been abused when they were at school? well when i was in jr. high people didn't like what i wore (teachers, students) and i wote a note to the school bord. keep in mind that i changed the persons' names so to keep them anonymous. but this is a true story, i wote it for revenge and mostly for myself, but now i show it to my friends to show them how to fight back against the school, its long .
this is my story.
Whoever I present this letter to hear me out Read it with close consideration if you stop half way down the page and don’t like it keep on reading because it might help you see how we kids think. Just because your grown-ups doesn’t mean you can’t listen to a kid once in awhile. We kids listen to what you guys say yet when we try to get you to under stand all you do is sit and nod like my words are going in one ear and out the other. Now when you read this and agree with me, or don’t, tell me because if you read this I will give you as much consideration as you did my letter. This is the part where I tell you what I’ve learned, heard, saw, and experienced over the past months at Vineyard Jr. High. These events are true, word for word; some might even bring disgust so bare with me.
But first I will repeat what it says in the student handbook 2005-2006 because it will deal with the first event. It says on the ninth page under willful disobedience, defiance and disrespect toward adults at school. You are expected to comply with all reasonable requests and follow directions when you are asked to do so by school personnel if you feel that you are being treated unjustly you may see the dean of students, the assistant principal, or principal. The first “event” is having to do with Mr. Ponto the seventh grade P.E. teacher. Two months into the year some kids were picking on me in my third period P.E. class first they just buged me, then they went as far as to spit on my P.E. number, I know there is a rule about not spiting on campus, I was lucky enough to see the spit before I sat, three times they did this and when I told Mr. Ponto all he said was to go sit on another number. But I thought what about the other kids in other periods who sit on the same number. I know he probably let them sit on it.
And after three days, three days of them spiting on my number, so I would sit on it, I was tired of it he didn’t even get the janitor to clean it up. What if the kid had a flu or disease that could be carried by touching it, what would happen then, think if I had gotten a disease what would my parents do to the district if they knew I had gotten it because a teacher was unsanitary enough to not clean it up. On the fourth day they were still spiting on my number. And the teacher was assigning teams for hockey, and guess what the teacher did, he put me on the same team with the two boys who were spiting on my number. Now why would a teacher do that if he knew I was having problems with them? It would just cause more problems for him. I said “I’m not going on that team”. And he said “why not”. “Because those are the boys who keep spiting on my number”, I said. We argued for about a minute.
And he just explodes and says “go stand by number nine on the fence!” And of course I said no. then he said “do you want to go to the office!” And I said “fine”. And I walked off to the office. Now I don’t really think he was going to send me to the office he was just threatening me to get me scared and make me be quiet. Let me ask you this what would you have done? Gone along with the teacher and keep being treated unjustly by your peers or do what I did? Now before I go on let me tell you what it says in the student handbook 2005-2006 page ten under suspension. Intentionally engaged in harassment, threats, or intimidation, directed against a pupil or a group of pupils, that is sufficiently severe or pervasive to have the actual and reasonable effect of materially disrupting classwork, creating substantial disorder, and invading the rights of that pupil or group of pupils by creating an intimidating or hostile educational environment. This applies to any pupil grades 4 to 8, inclusive. (EC48900.4) that means those kids should have been suspended for what they did to me instead they gave me ALC for two days, and didn’t do any thing to those two boys. Just because I didn’t want to sit in spit every third period.
Tell me is that fair? And when my mom called Mr. Ponto he said that he was sending me to the fence because of my earrings, that I had just gotten pierced that weekend. Which I had already talked to him about before class that I was going to give him the letter that says I can wear them in P.E. tomorrow, so that proves that he was sending me to the fence because I didn’t want to go on that team. I suggest that you keep your teachers from lying to the parents. In the looker room when we are getting dressed to go to lunch the helpers for P.E. rush us to hurry up get dressed and get out, and when you rush sometimes you forget to lock your locker, two times I did this and they gave me detention at lunch. But it says in the Physical Education Handbook under locker room rules, do not use restroom to fix hair or apply makeup, only your name should be on P.E. clothes. Yet I see them broken every day, day after day without any punishment nothing done about this what so ever, at the bottom of locker room rules it says that violation of these rules will result in consequences, i.e.: loss of item/s, detention, trash pick-up, or referral. Why focus on one rule and not the others?
The next event is dealing with Miss Pam. One day she enounced to the class that we were going to start learn ball. See we already were playing learn ball in Mr. Martin’s class and it isn’t fun I mean we can’t talk or do any thing.
I only have three of my best friends on the same team as me, two in Mr. Martin’s class and one in Miss James all the rest of my friends are on another team. So you can guess why I don’t want to play learn ball. I like to play it in his class but not Miss James. Because the only reason why she wants to play it is so the class will be quite. If she can’t keep us quite then she should find some other way than learn ball to do so.
Learn ball is supposed to teach us abut the real world and how to work in a business. But in a business you’re supposed to communicate and socialize with whomever you work with or nothing will get done. It takes away our freedom and our right as kids. And when your team wins in her class all she gives is a late pass and it says on the late pass, this pass allows you turn in work one day late it will lose 10% of the possible points. That is our reward for being quite all the time; we don’t even get all the points possible.
So it is pointless. And when I said I wasn’t going to do it she sent me to the office and I got a referral and two days of ALC. And when I asked to get out of that class they said I had to switch to another team If I wanted to switch one class, they said I could in two weeks too a month and yet it has been more than one month and still I haven’t been switched. She even went as far as to threaten us that she was going to send us to the office if we weren’t quite and she yelled it at us and only one person was talking. We don’t take it seriously in her class maybe if we started in the beginning of the year we would. If she had she wouldn’t have to threaten us. She needs to do it for the original reasons not just for her self.
I have a complaint about the GATE students; I heard that some of them got to go to see Narnia in theaters, how is that fair to other students? Who do their personal best in school and don’t get rewarded except for renaissance some don’t even use their cards. Most of the time I look up on the board and see that under homework assignments, they almost always have the same homework as the normal students. So why do they get special treatment? When you guys say that all kids have the same rights as others. There is one more concern that I have, in the cafeteria they play music and lately I have been hearing things that are against school rules, just because you’re the school doesn’t mean that you can’t follow your own rules. These are some of the songs I have been hearing. A song entitled “living in gangster’s paradise” by coolio, here are the lyrics.
As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I take a look at my life and realize there?s nothing left.
Cause I?ve been blasting and laughing so long that
Even my mama thinks my mind is gone.
But I ain?t never crossed a man that didn?t deserve it.
Me being treated like a punk, you know that?s unheard of.
You better watch how you?re talking and where you?re walking
Or you and your homies might lined in chalk.
I really hate to trip but I gotta loc
As they croak I see myself in the pistol smoke? Fool!
I?m the kinda G that little homies wanna be like,
On my knees in the night
Saying prayers in the street light.
( chorus )
Been spending most of our lives living in the gangsta?s paradise
(x2)
Keep spending most of our lives living in the gangsta?s paradise
(x2)
Look at the situation they got me facing:
I can?t live a normal life, I was raised by the streets,
So I gotta be down with the hood team.
Too much television watching got me chasing dreams.
I?m a educated fool with money on my mind
Got my 10 in my hand and a gleam in my eye
I?m a loc?d out gangsta set trippin banger
And my homies is there so don?t arouse my anger? Fool!
Death ain?t nothing but a heartbeat away
I?m living life do or die, what can I say?
I?m twenty-three now, but will I live to see twenty-four?
The way things are going I don?t know.
Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me
( chorus )
Power in the money, money in the power
Minute after minute, hour after hour
Everybody is running but half of them don?t know
What?s going on in the kitchen but ?I don?t know what?s
cookin??.
They say I gotta learn but nobody?s here to teach me
If they can?t understand it, how can they teach me?
I guess they can?t, I guess they won?t, I guess they front
That?s why I know my life is outta luck, fool!
(chorus )
Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me ( x2 )
This song talks about guns, and being a gangster now if I remember correctly we’re not supposed to be talking about that stuff or dressing that way so why encourage it and play it in the cafeteria. and you say that we cant play heavy meatal or rock because it might link to cults. The next song is called “ahh push it” by salt n pepa which is a very dirty song.
The lyrics are so dirty I don’t want to put it on this letter. Now I could probably see how you could slip up on coolio’s song but that other dirty song, how can you put that on the speakers? And almost all the songs you play have a parental advisory on the CD. How could a school break their own rules?
Another complaint I have is that I never get to speak to the principal; I only get to speak to the vice principal, Mr. Nat. You might be asking yourself why, why would I write this, well I don’t know why, maybe it’s because kids have rights to, and maybe it’s because we kids are treated unjustly just because we’re kids. And maybe just maybe it’s because I want justice.
I know I might have been defiant but it was for good reasons. Like my right as an American citizen even though I’m a “child” I’m still entitled to it. And that right is called freedom of speech. That is why I can write this letter and not get in trouble. Even though you might know who wrote this I still will not disclose my name. As I close off this letter let me say that this school needs to see their own actions and not just the kids. Let me ask you do you still think you were in the “right”. I think you guys need to ask the students what their complaints and concerns are and not just the parents; their words are just as important as the parents because they actually go to this school. Maybe then will the students listen to you?
