Hollywood star Rose McGowan has sensationally admitted she would have joined the IRA if she had grown up in Belfast.



The Scream actress made the comments at a news conference at the Toronto film festival recently while promoting new film Fifty Dead Men Walking. It is based on the autobiography by IRA informer Martin Mc Gartland.



McGowan, whose father is Irish, said, "I imagine had I grown up in Belfast, I would 100 per cent have been in the IRA. My heart just broke for the cause. Violence is not to be played out daily and provide an answer to problems, but I understand it."



21's Jim Sturgess plays Mc Gartland, while Sir Ben Kingsley plays his British handler. The film tells the tale of how Mc Gartland went undercover in the IRA at 16 years of age in 1987. He was kidnapped after his cover was blown in 1991, but escaped through a window.



He was given a new identity, but it became known after he was charged for a driving offence. The IRA were then blamed for a shooting that left him badly wounded. He has since got a whole new identity.
