it's fathers day
at the cemetery.
this year i'm paying my respects
in silence.
silently swimming
in a sea of memories
some good, some bad,
some happy, some sad.
i remember ...
dad driving me on my paper route
at 5 am when my bike had a flat.
dad sharing his cigarette with me
in the visiting hall at juvenile hall.
dad letting me stay with him
when I had nowhere else to go.
dad never getting to see me be good,
and now I am.
i'll never forget ...
our last goodbye
on the telephone
in the chaplains office in prison.
at least I was strait for our last talk.
did you hear me in the silence today dad ?
did you feel the kiss that I blew to you ...
as I walked from your grave ?
by martin ... with love
