the last time I talked to my Dad before he died was on the phone in the Chaplains office at the prison. I knew it was the last time I would talk to him and I sent off a Fathers Day card the next day. He did get it before he died, but I couldn't find it in his apartment.

After nearly 13 years I found it by accident mixed in some papers my Stepmom had.



Funny the things I held most important about my Dad that I put in that card ... well not so funny to me.



I'll share ....



Dad,



I thought of a lot of clever little rhymes for this card, but how about this ?

Thanks for getting up to do my paper route with me,

letting me help open the bar,

getting me my first real job,

Coming to my dance contest.

Carrying me home when I got hit by the car in the snow on 54th,

and coming down and getting me at the park when I ran away without saying anything in front of the other kids.

Thanks for always knowing that I wasn't really bad, and for always having hope for me.

And thanks for always loving me and not giving up on me even when I was hooked on drugs and not being a good citizen.

Especially thanks for shoving the neighborhood committee off the property when they came to bitch about me and my friends even though some of their accusations were true. you stuck by me.
