you can leave a comment on their profiles saying you have used up your messages for the day and will get back to them tomorrow...
it's really not that bad :) it doesn't take long to get to 30 and then unlimited messages

You will get there. The first 5 levels aren't that hard to get through. Try leaving a message in your profile about it. Everyone here knows whats going on so they don't think you are being rude.

It's not to "protect from spam", it's so you do not send spam. Once you level up and prove that you are on this site legitimately, then you'll get more privileges.
