I felt just terrible. What on earth was I suppose to do now? I hadn't meant to hurt Lilly's feelings.
I slunk to a clear spot to take off. Slowly I flew back to Grandmother's cave.
Hours later, when she awoke, my Grandmother found me gazing out into the dark night sky.
"How long have I been sleeping?" she asked.
"Not long." I replied.
"What's bothering you, young one?" she asked quietly.
I sighed. Should I tell her about my encounter with the Dragon Fairie? She would probably be very disappointed with me.
"Oh, it's nothing really, Grandmother. I guess I'm just tired."
"This is not the time to begin lying to me." she spoke quietly. "I know you far too well for that. What has happened?"
I hesitated for only a moment before I told her all about my little Dragon Fairie.
"What shall I do, Grandmother? I know I hurt her feelings, but I have my own Qwest to pursue." I finished more forlorn than ever.
"Such a dilema." she chuckled.
I looked at her in shock! "How can you laugh at a time like this?"
"Calm yourself, young one. The solution is really quite simple." she assured me.
"How? What can I possibly do?" I asked.
"You fret too much, my dear. You simply have to compromise. She needs you to finish her Qwest. And you need to begin yours. Take her with you. She may prove to be more of an asset than you can imagine. Then, when your Qwest is finished, go with her to finish hers." she smiled warmly at me.
"Of course! Why hadn't I thought of that? It's the only logical solution." I realized. "Oh, but what if she has already left? I know she was very angry."
"Go and seek her out." she urged.
"But I don't know where to look." I replied.
"If you think about it, I'm sure you'll know where to start." she smiled a secret little smile at me.
How would I know where to look? She could be anywhere by now. Still puzzled, I walked out of the cave and into the early morning sunshine.
The air was warm and sweet. Leaves rustled softly in the nearby tree. Birds chirped and sang in a melodious un-tune. And a soft humming drifted up from the lake.
Humming?! "Lilly, it must be Lilly!" I thought aloud, as I glided down beside the shimmering water.
There she was splashing from lilypad to lilypad. I watched her for a moment unsure of what to say.
"Well, if it isn't his majesty, King High and Mighty Dragon." sarcasm weighed each and every word.
"Lilly, I would like to appologize for my arrogance yesterday. If you would still like to accompany me on my Qwest, I would love to have you join me." I spoke politely.
She looked down her nose at me for a long moment.
"Won't a pesky 'bug' just be in your way?" she pouted.
"Please forgive me for my derogatory comment. I will make every effort in the future to think before I speak." I humbly bowed to her.
"Ah, so you are capable of true Dragon eloquence. Still, I'm not so sure it would be worth the effort for me." she glanced at her delicate nails and looked away into the distance.
"I promise that if you come with me, I will accompay you to fufill your Qwest as well." I vowed.
"Pretty please with.....fairie dust on top?" she fluttered her eyelashes at me.
What game was she playing now?
"Um, pretty please with, um, fairie dust on top." I mumbled.
"How nice." I said, not really sure how to respond. I'd never heard of a Dragon Fairie before.
Her bottom lip began to tremble. "You don't believe me do you?"
"Well now, don't go crying. I've been, ah, out of circulation for a very long time. We don't have any Dragon Fairies where I come from."
"Oh, then you don't know about my Qwest?" she asked.
"No, I'm very sorry, but I don't know anything about it." she looked as though she might burst into tears, so I quickly continued: "Why don't we find a comfortable spot and you can tell me all about this Qwest of yours."
We decided to sit beneath a nearby shade tree. I curled up into my best listening position as she began her tale.
"From the day that I was born, I've been learning everything there is to know about Dragons. You see, thats what we Dragon Fairies do, guard and protect our Special Dragon. When I came of age, I set out upon my Qwest to find my own Special Dragon. And now I've found you! I can't wait to take you home to fufill the prophecy."
"Now wait just one minute, Lilithabell." I began.
"Call me Lilly, please." she interupted.
"Lilly, you don't understand," I continued. "I am on my own Qwest. I can't just fly where ever home is for you. I have important Treasure to find to save my entire clan."
Her eyes grew round as the sun. "You will need protection on such an important journey. That's what I've been trained my whole life to do. I must protect my Dragon at any cost!" she proclaimed in a ringing voice.
"My Qwest will be far too dangerous for a little bug like you to tag along." I regretted my outburst the moment it left my mouth.
"WELL, MR. HIGH AND MIGHTY DRAGON," she shouted, "You just might be surprised at how big a help this little "BUG" might prove to be if you are not such an enormous fool as to shun my assistance!"
She turned and fluttered away before I could think of anything to say.
