i don't know who i am. i thought i did, but now i'm not so sure - at least as far as my name is concerned.
remember last month i mentioned that the last living relative of the elephant man is a selby? well it seems i may not be. my sister read about it a couple of years ago, so she was prompted to research our family tree. that's when she came to a sudden brick wall, because it seems that Don Selby, our grandfather died the same year he was born. not only that, but there is no record of his marriage to my gran.
i always suspected he was a gypsy - he looked like a gypsy (mind you, he used to be a farm worker, so worked outdoors), and he was a horse whisperer - a tradition that was almost exclusive to gypsies.
so if he wasn't don selby, who was he? what family are we really descended from? i often wondered why he never fought in the second world war. we were told it was because he was in reserved occupation - but he wasn't. he was a lowly farmhand - not even a landowner. his work was done by land girls, and most men in his occupation were drafted into the armed forces.
