i've been watching a couple of tv programs lately that i find fascinating. dragons den, and american inventors. essentially they are the same thing - just different countries. in fact one of the judges / investors sits on both panels. basically, a panel of rich investors who are successful business people judge who is to get backing / investment on a new idea.

in my lifetime i've seen lots of missed opportunities either get forgotten, or more often, fall into the hands of someone with a little more vision. england is notorius for never investing in a new idea because old ideas are the best, and anything new is a gamble. its why we are now a third rate nation.

on the other hand - i've also seen a lot of gadgets hit the market, and then fade away fast.

i was totally surprised by how the uk team were bowled over by some man who had invented a new cube type puzzle game he wanted to market big time.

where have they been? rubics cubes were big for a short while, but once the novelty wore off, they soon dropped in price to almost givaway prices, and then vanished. such puzzles have a novelty value, but dont last long - people grow tired of them pretty quickly, and most young people want electronic games. look at suduko - people went wild about them for a year or two, but now they are fading away. some people still play them - just as some people play crossword puzzles and jigsaws - but the pocket electronic sudukos have dwindled and got cheaper, and you dont see sudukp everywhere you look anymore.

the big winner on american inventor last night was an invention by a deaf woman - a sort of speaker system worn on the chest and shoulders tha enables a deaf person to feel music. sounds like a really good idea - i know a lot of deaf people love discos coz they can feel the beat and dance to it. unfortunately, i remember the seventies. in the late seventies there was a similar invention called bone-phones. it us3d vibrations to transmit sound from a radio or cassette recorder to be transmitted through the body, resonating in the bones. it was very shortlived, as not long after it was marketed and sold, it was discovered to cause damage to the bones over time.

unless this new invention is designed to only deliver a very mild vibration, then i predict there will be medical problems.

one invention that came close to winning dragons den has great potential, and could be the next big thing. a handheld device that you plug into your pc to download info in your local area, with your own profile, that will enable you to know who you meet at the club or pub who is likely to be most compatible with you - and it could be later upgraded for bluetooth. in essence a portable dating computer. whether it actually works or not is hardly relevant - this will sell.

it didnt win because the older member of the team and the female member were afraid it was too complicated and technical. again, technophobia holding back a good idea. no doubt he will have to sell his idea to an american company who will make millions out of it, and england will lose out.
