Japanese Inpiration

[A short story of my life that led to something great, it served as a good practice for my descriptive language].

To define my future all that was needed was a lunch stop at a small sushi bar in the heart of Yokokusa Japan with my father's Japanese native fiancé Kimiko. She knew, my love of new experiences, my talents, my dreams, and the fact I had no idea how to combine them all into a promising future. If she had staged my lunch time inspiration and gave me the opportunity to turn on the lights, or if it was pure coincidence I will never know, it is her secret to keep.

From the outside the building seemed a hole in the wall establishment. The first step inside induced the feeling of claustrophobia caused by two thick panels of plastic. They were meant to keep dirt and debris out, but at that moment it felt as if their sole purpose was to keep my lungs free of air. My doubts of the place grew as Kimiko led me through the unpleasant panels. As I reached the innards of the restaurant my eyes opened wide with astonishment. The place seemed busy as 20 bee hives combined, there were countless chairs occupied by families, friends, and business associates all speaking in a language foreign to my ears. There were numerous men in odd yet enchanting attire clearly native to Japan that were slicing, dicing and rolling behind a counter. But most impressive of all was the rotating track circling the single oblong table of the restaurant. On the track was an assortment of colorful sushi, rolls, and chunks of pink fish as well as dessert sushi, which was constantly being restocked by the colorful men behind the counter.

My mind was racing at the rate the sushi was being consumed. The customs were so diverse and infatuating to my American mind. I felt enlightened, here before me was this whole new world of culture, so much to explore, touch, taste, and see. This sole experience influenced my whole idea of a future career as a documentary photographer, [in the field of professional photo journalism]. The instant I set eyes on the inside of that sushi bar aphorism popped into my mind, one picture is worth a thousand words. I could be the one to capture those pictures and show them to people of the world, people who wouldn't ever have the chance to see otherwise. To have even set foot in that place I felt gifted and my dream to share that gift with the rest of the world became clear.

To celebrate my enlightenment I took a snapshot of Kimiko and myself, a snapshot which still makes a presence in my room, a presence of inspiration and thankfulness. That bustling sushi bar is in the back on my mind constantly, a reminder of my goal. That single event shines as my motivation for the future, the art of photography.
