Humming carols to myself,
Tears collect behind my eyes
without warning.
Mistletoe and holly,
Twinkling lights.
A world snuggled in blankets of
peace and good cheer.
Yet familiar pain jolts sharply
from some secret abyss,
Malignant and malicious,
A silent mockery of remission.
My hardened heart,
Encrusted by salt of countless tears,
Succumbs--
To snowflakes and jinglebells,
Nordic sweaters and cedar boardwalks--
A jagged scar that never healed.
Tousled blonde hair,
Magical blue eyes,
Perfection reflected in a mischievous smile:
My once-in-a-lifetime Love,
Destined to cast eternal shadow
on my soul.
