Jasmine's Secret - Chapter Three

23:56 Jun 16 2010
Times Read: 634

When I had woken back up, it was 8:30 in the morning. I stood and began to stretch my aching body. Midnight chirped on my bed, pointing her gray-green eyes into my plain green ones. “Morning, Midnight,” I said, leaning over to stroke her black fur. I touched my noes to hers and she began to lick it. The sandpaper texture of it tickled my face, and I began to laugh. I heard a knock on my door. I stood and opened it. There stood the girl from my nightmare. Elve was in my house.

“Might I come in, Jasmine? I have traveled long ways to see you,” she said. Her voice, sweet and innocent, hinted a heavy Irish accent. She moved her eyes up and down my body, chilling me. “You are even more beautiful than I expected you to be.” She moved her hands toward me.

“I don’t know who you are, but if you don’t leave, I will kick your ass out of here,” I said, moving away from her.

“You won’t have to let me in. Just, whenever you leave, I’ll get you. That is, if you survive that long,” she chimed, pressing against an invisible barrier in my doorway. “Or, I could just keep you here myself and let you die slowly. It’s your choice. Let me in, or die.”

I stood in the center of my room, mouth agape. “I-I’ll let you in,” I said finally. I watched as her hands fell through the barrier, allowing her to enter. She smiled a wicked smile.

“I thank you, Jasmine. You don’t know what kind of help you have been so far. Now, the matters of my Book,” she said. She scanned her eyes over my room as if the barrier blocked her sight from anything other than me. “I like your room. It’s very much my taste.” Elve spotted Midnight. “Ah, yes. Your cat. You’ve had her since she was a kitten, have you not? It’s true what they say, you know. Owners and their pets are remarkably similar. I bet you would love to have her eyes, would you not? I can make that happen for you, if you like. But, it would take a lot of energy. I would have to stay here with you.”

“How would I hide you? I mean, from my family,” I said, falling into her trap. “Can you shape shift or something?”

Elve laughed. “No, no. I mean, I can. Just not into animals. I could, however, change into a teenager like yourself.”

I thought about this for a long time. “No. Just... Stay somewhere. Not here,” I said firmly. “I’m sorry, Elve, but I can’t hide you.”

Elve looked saddened. “Don’t be sorry for me. I’m sorry for you, Jasmine,” she said in a chilling tone. I shivered. She put her hands on either side of my face. “It will be sad to see such a pretty face be destroyed. Oh, well. It won’t be painful for you, dear. It will be quick. I’ll be back for my Book.” She stepped away from me and laughed before vanishing into the air.

“Jasmine? Are you all right? I’m really worried. You haven’t called me in forever,” Chris said from behind my locked door. I snapped out of my thoughts to hear him. I listened to his voice, letting the words sink in before getting up to let him in. I unlocked the door. “Jasmine! What happened to you? You look like you haven’t slept in weeks. What’s wrong?” He walked in and I locked the door again.

I walked over to my mirror to see if I looked as bad as I thought. Chris wrapped his arms around my waist and nuzzled my neck. “I do look bad,” I managed to say. Elve must’ve put some sort of spell on me.

“You don’t look that bad,” Chris said from my neck. He turned me away from the mirror and toward him. I could feel his heart beating against mine. I began to relax more. “I love you, Jasmine. I love everything about you. Your hair, your eyes, your smile, your body... Everything.”

“I love you, too, Chris. All of you,” I replied. I looked up at him.

“Jasmine. I have something I want to ask you,” he said as he pulled himself away from me. He removed something from his back pocket.

It took me a minute for me to realize what he took from his pocket to show me. When I figured it out, I gasped. In Chris’s hand was a condom. “Chris,” I began, laughing, “you’re joking, right?”

“Jasmine, I’ve never been more serious in my life,” he said, grabbing my arms lightly. “I know I’m ready. I just want to know if you are.” He looked directly into my eyes, waiting for my answer.

“Chris, can we talk about this first,” I asked him, tears in my eyes.

“What is there to talk about, Jasmine?” He tightened his grip.

“You’re hurting me, Chris,” I said, begging him to let me go.

“Fine. Let’s talk about it,” he said, letting me go. He sat down on my bed and waited for me. I sat next to him. “Now, what do we need to talk about? I mean, what do you have to say first?”

“I don’t know if I’m ready yet, Chris. I mean, we’ve only been dating for over a month. Maybe in a few weeks,” I suggested.

Chris thought for a moment. “Okay. One condition, though.”

“What?” I looked over to him, waiting for his answer.

“Just one little thing I want you to do,” he said, looking down at his jeans. “Would you do it? I mean, if it’s okay...”

“Chris, you know I would do anything for you,” I said. He moved his hands to his zipper. I grabbed his wrists. “But, I told you, I’m not ready.”

“Okay,” he said. He wriggled free of my grip and wrapped his hands around my waist. Before I could say anything, he covered my mouth with his, making me forget any and all of my worries.

I woke up at noon the same day laying next to Chris. I stood, careful not to wake him, and walked to my mirror. I looked even worse than before. My hair was a mess. My eyes were dull. My skin had a pale color to it. I hurried to my bathroom and fixed myself up a little. I had to deal with the dullness of my eyes. Other than that, I looked fine. I walked back to my room and began to find clothes for the day. I found a black halter top and a black skirt to match. I located my knee-high piano socks and short black converses and went behind my Japanese paper screen to change. When I reappeared from behind the screen, Chris was awake.

“Hey, babe,” he said, rubbing his eyes. “Nice outfit.” He stood.

“Thanks,” I replied shortly. “How are you feeling?”

“Peachy,” he said sarcastically. “How about you?”

“Tired as hell, but good,” I said, walking to him.

“I love you so much, Jas,” he said, nuzzling my neck.

“First time you’ve used my nickname in a hell of a long time,” I said.

“First time I felt like it in a hell of a long time,” he replied.

“Can you wait for another first time,” I asked jokingly.

“Nope. But I’m going to, for you,” he answered seriously.

Chris and I walked to the bookstore after he borrowed some things to wear from Josh. “Jas, I love your brother,” Chris said jokingly to me.

“Too bad for you. He’s got a girlfriend,” I said in the same tone. We laughed. When we reached the bookstore, we had to quiet ourselves before entering. I immediately walked to the fiction section and froze. There stood Juni with Bryan. It looked as if he had her cornered.

“What’s wrong, Juni? Afraid you’ll get hurt again,” Bryan was saying to her. “Afraid of a little thing called ‘lovemaking’?”

“Get the hell away from my sister, Bryan,” I said, furiously.

He turned around. “Well, well, well. Jazzy came to rescue her sissy again. Deja vú, isn’t it? Jazzy, baby, come here. Let me give you a hug.”

“Hell no,” I said. “Now let go of my sister. Now.”

“Now, Jazzy, why would I do that? Do you want me for yourself, Jazzy? Do you want to have me, Jazzy? I’m waiting for an answer, Jazzy,” Bryan said, smirking. He turned back around to Juni.

“Get away from her,” Chris said from behind me.

“When did you get here,” I asked in a whisper.

“Soon after he was coming onto you,” he whispered back.

“Are you going to make me, Chris,” Bryan demanded.

“Like how I did a while back ago? Remember that, Bryan? Remember how I punched you right in the mouth,. Bryan,” Chris said.

“You little asshole,” Bryan said, leaving Juni alone. He began to walk to Chris. Instead of punching Chris, though, he grabbed me in front of him. Bryan pulled a gun from his pocket and pressed it against my back.

“Get off of my girlfriend,” Chris said, taking a step forward.

“Chris, don’t move,” I pleaded. I, knowing Chris knew sign language, signed the word “gun” repeatedly in front of me. Chris finally knew what I was telling him and took a step backward.

“Now, then. Chris, out of my way. Jazzy, walk,” Bryan said calmly. “We’re going for a little walk, Jazzy, and Chris and Juni are not going to say anything to anyone, alright?” Everyone nodded. “Good. Now, walk.”

“I love you, Chris,” I said, tears rolling down my face.

“I love you, too, Jas,” Chris replied, trying not to cry.

I signed “call Josh” to Chris before being dragged off with Bryan.

“Now, Jazzy, we’re going to have some fun,” Bryan said hotly as we reached his apartment, number 15H. Brianna, his sister, wasn’t home.

“What kind of fun,” I asked, tears still streaming down my cheeks.

“The kind that we used to have,” he said. “Now, then. Turn around and take off the shirt.” He held the gun tightly, waiting.

I turned, slowly, to face him. My hands shaking, I lifted the halter off to reveal my red strapless bra. I held the shirt in front of me.

“Good, good. Now, do you remember what would happen next? I remember. Take off my shirt. Slowly,” he added.

“Put the gun down and I will,” I said, dropping my shirt.

“Fine. Whatever keeps you happy,” he said, setting the gun down in the table next to him. “Now. My shirt. Button by button.”

I walked over to him and, as he wished, began to unfasten every button on his shirt. When it fell open, I pulled it off of the boy.

Bryan picked the gun back up. “Now, then. Your skirt.”

I slid out of my skirt to reveal red whoreshorts that matched the bra.

“Jazzy knows how to dress,” Bryan said, taking me in. “Now. My jeans. Then, I remember what happened afterwards. Do you?”

I nodded before unfastening his jeans and pulling them down slowly.

“I also remember how we never got past my jeans, Jazzy. I hope that hasn’t changed with anyone else, because you promised I would be the one. Remember that promise, Jazzy? I sure do,” Bryan said. “Let’s skip this part. It really sucks. Let’s go to the fun part. The one we never reached.”

“Jazzy, baby, you never told me you were still a virgin,” Bryan said, smirking. “But it was fun, wasn’t it? Hope you remember this for the rest of your life. Hope you remember this when you’re with Chris.”

“I hate you so much, Bryan,” I said before getting up.

“I think I like you better naked,” he said softly, gazing over me.

“Stop looking at me. I’m leaving,” I said firmly. I heard a click.

Bryan pointed the gun at me. “Where the hell do you think you’re going, Jazzy?”

“I’m leaving,” I demanded. “I don’t ever want to see you again.”

“Then go,” Bryan said. “I don’t want you. Whore.”

I walked back to my apartment, shaking. When I walked in, Chris was waiting for me. “I don’t want to talk about it,” I told him, crying.

He wrapped his arms around me. “You don’t have to,” he said.

I pushed him away and signed “rape” before running to my room.

Jasmine's Secret - Chapter Two

23:53 Jun 16 2010
Times Read: 635

It had been three weeks since the day Chris had finally kissed me. I wrote every day in my journal about it. It seemed a little bit weird that I did, but I did it anyway. Chris had officially asked me out the day after the kiss. It was the happiest day of my life. I was almost out of paper in my journal. I had five sheets left in it. I didn’t know what I would do, seeing as how the journal that I would love to have had cost over $40 the last time I checked. I was confused about the price, but didn’t question the clerk like I had last time I bought a notebook there.

“Jasmine. Please listen to reason. I didn’t mean anything by that phone call. I swear,” Juni said, running to catch up with me as I walked at least twenty paces in front of her to Belinda’s Bookstore. “She should have stayed home with Josh and not followed me,” I thought, my eyes filling up with tears of rage as I walked. She caught up with me and grabbed my shoulder. I flinched but didn’t turn around. I didn’t even want to look at her. I stopped walking and we just stood there for a moment before Juni spoke again. “I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings by it. I swear,” she repeated, not letting go of my shoulder. I shrugged her hand off and kept walking, leaving her behind to wonder.

I was now in the bookstore, scanning my eyes over a shelf of historical fiction, not even looking at any of the names of the books. I was furious with my sister. I didn’t even want her as a sister anymore. Someone had walked into the aisle and stood beside me. I didn’t glance up to look. I felt their hand slip around my waist and immediately knew who it was. I turned to look at Chris. My mouth dropped open. Bryan Riley stood with his arm around me, keeping me from running. He had a smirk on his face and a joking gleam in his eyes. I struggled to be free of him. “Get away from me,” I whispered fiercely to him. He just smirked again.

“Now, now, we don’t want to do anything rash,” he said. He rested his other arm next to my head on the shelf behind me. I had never felt so trapped in my life than that moment. “Why don’t we get out of here, Jas?”

“I have told you a thousand times: I don’t want to be anywhere with you again,” I said, remembering a worse time in my life. “Now let me go.”

“Jazzy, baby, I’m never letting you go again,” he said lightly, leaning in to me. “Don’t you remember the good times that we shared? When we would just sit in your room... in the dark... having the best times?” He stroked my hair with his free hand, knowing the way to shut me up. He smiled his evil smile, knowing that he had me where he wanted me.

“Hey jackass. Let go of my girl,” I head a familiar voice say nearby. I opened my eyes and saw Bryan looking over at Chris.

“You going to make me,” Bryan asked Chris before he dared put his mouth on mine. He was too close for me to push him away. I felt helpless.

“You mother—,” I heard Chris say before I felt Bryan be tugged away from me. I opened my eyes again and saw Chris punch Bryan right in the jaw. I heard a crack. “Jas, get out of here.”

I ran out of the bookstore faster than I would if I were being chased by a madman with a knife. I stopped running in an alley in between Allysan’s Accessories and CeeCee’s Pizza Shop. I hung onto the brick wall, panting. I heard a noise farther back in the alleyway. I whirled around, frightened. I saw something lying in front of the brick wall farthest away from the street. I walked cautiously to the thing, looking back to the street every five paces. When I reached the item of question, I could see that it was a large notebook with a scene of dragons fighting in the sky on the cover. I picked up the book and wiped it clean of dust. It was lighter than I had expected it to be. I opened the book to a place with a gap inside. There was a note folded many times in the spot where I opened it. I set the book down on the ground and opened the note. It was handwritten in large letters. The message read:

Thou have found the Book of ancient Books

Thou have opened it and taken looks

Thou are the Cursed One, thee see

Now this warning thou must heed:

Secrets thou kept to thyself

Written in the Book of Elve

Wishes thou make will be true

By every full and silver moon

But fun and games Elve is naught

For Elve’s magick is fun not

Elve is evil, wicked, dark

Hope Elve’s words have left a mark

I read through the poem several times before putting the paper back inside and carrying the book back home, my thoughts making me dizzy.

I walked through the front door without a sound, almost stumbling over a stool as I entered. I saw Josh and Juni sitting on the couch. They were watching a movie on the DVD player we got a year ago. They both looked over at me for a moment before looking back at the screen. “I’m home,” I said quietly. “I found a new journal. I’m going to my room now.”

“Wait,” Josh said, getting up. “What “new journal” are you talking about? Where did you get it?” He looked at the bulky book in my arms.

“It’s just a really big journal,” I said, averting my green eyes. I left the front room before he could reply. I dropped the book carefully onto my bed, not wanting to wake up Midnight, my beautiful black cat. Her eyes were a pale green hinted with gray around the pupils. I would kill to have those eyes. I thought back to the note in the book. “I haven’t even thought to see if that book is really a journal or not,” I spoke into the silence. Midnight lifted her head up and meowed at me. “Yeah, I know, Midnight. I’m sorry.” She licked her front paw and went back to sleep.

That night, I kept looking over at the strange journal called “Elve’s Book.” I kept thinking about the note inside, the warning. I had so much to write about, but I ran out of paper in my old journal. I snatched the book up and grabbed my multi-colored pen. I opened the book up to a blank page, the first page. I clicked one of the colors and began to write everything that I’ve kept inside. I felt a wrong feeling each time I created a letter. I didn’t stop writing. I couldn’t stop. It was just a freak thing, or so I thought.

“...Why do I feel like I’ve just committed one of the seven deadly sins by writing in that book? It’s probably just that weird poem,” I thought before drifting to sleep. When I woke up, it was midnight. I was soaked with sweat, and I felt as though I was made of Jello. I flicked the lamp on, grabbed my pen and Elve’s Book, and began to write:

Last night I had the craziest dream. I dreamed that Chris and I were standing on top of a very high hill at midnight, holding hands and staring into each other’s eyes. The next thing I know, I was staring into the eyes of a demon girl with dark brown hair that was put up into twin ponytails. She looked as though she was just a child. Her eyes were pure black with no iris or pupil and she stared into my soul, reading every one of my secrets. Her lips, red as blood, mouthed words to me that I didn’t hear but were said inside my head. She had said, “Pretty faced Jasmine. Pretty, pretty faced Jasmine. Cursed Jasmine.” She held my hands tightly with her icy grip, freezing every muscle in my body like I was merely a wet towel cast into a hail storm in the middle of December. My arms ached and my legs shook with terror as I tried to break free of her, but she held me tightly. I tried to scream, but no words escaped my lips. She let go of my hands, but I was still as ice. She vanished, and I screamed. I then woke up from the nightmare.

I put my pen down, closed Elve’s Book, and set them both down on my nightstand before drifting back into dreamland. I felt Midnight craw up next to my chest and purr. It was one of my last moments of sanity left.
