Ophiolatreia, the ancient rites of Serpent worship handed down from generations past to today. We at Circle Serpent, are a family tradition, and have been inner-acting publicly since 1988.





Several have asked us, what is Ophiolatreia; so, here is this little explanation. We hope it serves your needs.



What is it exactly?









It is a Form of Nature Worship - Religious devotion paid to all things in Nature, including the Elements, Celestial bodies, Plants, Animals, and Man.





It is Shamanistic - Based essentially on the belief that numerous Gods and Ancestral Spirits, both benign and malignant, affect our fortunes and can be swayed only through the intercession of the Adders/Priesthood who's Power to communicate with the Gods and Spirits is Supra-Natural and is acquired only through either heredity, direct impartation, or the favor of a particular Spirit or God/ess. The Adders mediate with supernal and infernal beings by means of incantations, dreams, and visions and is responsible for divination, the cure of disease, and the orthodox performance of ceremonies.





It is Totemist - belief through which a human clan expresses its relationship to a natural object, a totem; with which we believe ourselves linked. It is not the worship of animals or objects of affiliation with them. We trace our descent to Draconic/Serpentine Ancestors, as per our creation narration.





It is Animistic - which is a general belief in spiritual beings -- Spirits/Souls are the cause of life in all things; we picture spirits as phantoms, resembling vapors/shadows, which can transmigrate from person to person, from the dead to the living, and from and into plants, animals, and inanimate objects.





It is Fetishism - a belief and religious practice in which supernatural attributes are imputed to material, inanimate objects, fetishes. The practice includes sorcery, miracle-working, and magic, with many attendant ceremonies and minor rituals. Our fetishes are modeled in imitation of spiritual entities and is also represented by the animal itself.





It is Ancestor Worship - religious veneration of ancestors who may be housed in images and setup as household patrons and appeased with offerings. We look to them for success and happiness.





It is Magic/Sorcery - the art of performing works of wonder and gaining knowledge through supernatural means.

1)Sympathetic : based on symbolism and wish fulfillment. Desired effects are accomplished by imitation and/or by making use of associated objects.

2)Incantation : or the chanting of formulas, spells, or verses that contain the names of supernatural beings and/or persons who are to be helped, etc.

3)Divination : the acquisition of secret knowledge by Augury (interpretation of omens and/or portents), Tongues (inspired utterances by persons in a state of trance, oracular Adders/Priest/ess, or mediums), Casting Lots, and Astrology.

This is a story adapted for a particular mythos. But the underlying themes are actually gleaned from reading in the Akashic Records, many years ago by myself.
