The Cult of the setitars was founded in ancient times in Eygpt. Legends says that they were the offspring of a woman possessed by goddess Hathor and a man possessed by god Seth. First let me give some background on the god and goddess, then I will continue my tale.
Seth the ancient Egyptian god of chaos, the embodiment of hostility and even of outright evil. He is also a god of war, deserts, storms, and foreign lands. He is held responsible for storms and cloudy weather. He was a peril for ordinary Egyptians in the underworld, where he was said to seize the souls of the unwary.
Seth was portrayed as a man with the head of undeterminable origin, although some see in it the head of an aardvark. He had a curved snout, erect square-tipped ears and a long forked tail. He was sometimes entirely in animal form with the body similar to that of a greyhound. Animals sacred to this god where the dog, the jackal, the gazelle, the donkey, the crocodile, the hippopotamus, and the pig. There was an important sanctuary at Ombos in Upper Egypt, his reputed birthplace, and considered to be the home of his cult. This cult was also prominent in the north-eastern region of the Nile delta.
Hathor is known as the lady of the known universe; her image is sometimes seen on funerary depiction as she stands behind Osiris, welcoming the dead to their new home. Hathor was also known as the Lady of Greenstone and Malachite, due to her being regarded as a goddess of the desert fringes where such mines existed. She is also depicted as the mother goddess of Egypt.
In earlier periods she was most often depicted as a full cow with the sundisk between her horns or as a slender woman wearing the horns-and-a-sundisk headdress. She was also shown as a hippopotamus, a falcon, a cobra, or a lioness, however these were not as frequent as the woman or the cow. While there are some depictions of Hathor as a woman with a cow's head, this is mainly found only in the later periods.
So you have the woman possessed by the embodiment of love and the mother of the world; yet a man possessed by the embodiment of hostility and outright evil. They offspring became a powerfull force to be reconed with. The gods and goddesses saw the potential power that the beings possessed. They determined that the beings were not to be destroyed, but to be trained and used as the gruardians of the other Gods. These beings would become known as the Setitar.
The Setitar are much stronger, faster, and intelligent than normal humans. They like their spiritual parents have the ability to shapeshift into many animal forms. They are most often depicted as a giant snake that have an upper torso features similar to a human. They often have vast mental or psychic powers that they employ on their intended pray. The Setitars have the ability to cloud the minds of their vicitms, so the victim are almost always unaware of their presence. They were the perfect guardians for the gods, because the Setitars can apear in human from at any time. The Setitars only require limited sleep and limited nutrients to survive. Their main food source was the life force they drained off of the souls of the unwary. The Setitar did drink blood, but that was only during ritual sacrifices and other festivals.
