I just finished watching "An Inconvient Truth", a movie with former Vice President Al Gore presenting the facts about global warming. I guess maybe I'm still in shock, or disbelief, or wondering what to do next.
I've known for quite some time this was happening. Hell, I grew up in Alaska, if anyone in this country has seen the effects its us. We used to get enough snow in some places it would reach the tops of stop signs by mid-December. Now we're lucky if we even see snow by December. Hitting 80 degree's during the summer up there used to be unheard of, now it's standard the first week in July.
I remember as a kid visiting Portage Glacier and how the face of it sat at the half way point of Portage Lake and the rest of the lake was filled with icebergs large enough to land a small plane on. 20 years later you can't even see the face of the glacier any more, and the icebergs are more like ice cubes. The visitors center built to view the glacier is now a place to remember it's former glory. Portage Glacier has receded past the back of the lake, around the corner of the valley it once filled and up into the mountain it used to cover.
So what to do next. I guess I'll start here and ask anyone who reads my journal to PLEASE go rent or buy "An Inconvient Truth". Watch it, have an open mind, and BELIEVE! This is happening, it's only a matter of time before the effects are irreversible and mother nature fries our asses right off the planet. We are the cause, we can be the solution. Tell your family and friends. Get involved. It's very simple, start by recycling. Walk or bike the two miles to the store. Use mass transit where it's available, carpool. Just do something.
I'm starting right now, the 2 mile drive to my cousin's will now become the 2 mile bike. Hell anything within town will become a bike ride.
We do not own the planet, we are borrowing it from our children...
