Chapter Two
The ride to the boardwalk was a quiet one. Donovan seemed to be distracted by something. He had not acted like the man in the bookstore since he stopped and was looking around. Maybe I wasn’t imagining that feeling of being watched. She thought to herself, and she looked over at Donovan sitting behind the wheel stone faced, constantly looking in his review mirror. The light from the dashboard lit up his features nicely, yet brought out something in his face she hadn’t noticed before, something almost frightening.
The radio playing softly and the purring of the supercharged engine of Donovan’s wild strawberry 1969 Dodge Charger was the only things that broke the silence. It must have been a night for love songs on the radio, or just the station he had been listening to, first it was Love of a lifetime by Firehouse, then to Let’s Make Love by Bryan Adams then the final song was Phoenix’ and Adam’s song Lonely Road of Faith by Kid Rock. Just hearing that song brought back memories… good ones. The more she thought about them the worse she felt about going out with Donovan. Maybe I misunderstood what I heard on the phone. She thought. Maybe I over reacted.
“No you didn’t.” Donovan’s voice whispered through her head. She looked at him with astonishment, but he remained stone faced looking at the road ahead, he hadn’t moved, much less spoke. Ok now I know I’m going nuts, she said to herself. Maybe I should try to start a conversation with him.
“What did you see back there in the parking lot?” Phoenix asked curiously
“Nothing” Donovan answered sharply. He checked his review mirror again. Phoenix turned and looked out the back window into the darkness, then back to him.
“I know better. You’re entire body language changed back there. You saw something that made you want to get out of there.”
“What do you mean my body language changed?”
“It’s like your guard had gone up, and you wanted to get out of there fast. I’m daring you to tell me I’m wrong.” Her voice grew forceful and steady. He could feel her glare burning the side of his face.
“No, you’re right… I wanted to get out of there quickly.” he admitted, then looked over at her with those gleaming blue eyes and smiled. “I just wanted to get you all to myself.”
“Nice save, but I seen you watching something in that alley. I may be a chick, but I’m not stupid.” Her tone was firm and she couldn’t help but feel a little insulted.
“I heard something down the alley. I couldn’t see what it was. Ok? I just wanted to get you out of there. You know this city isn’t the safest... People are mugged and killed here every day.” His answer had a sarcastic tone; however she still didn’t buy his story.
“Ok” She muttered as she turned her face to the window leaning close enough to let the night air dance across her face. The sea was a beautiful moonlit sight; the lights from a boardwalk were coming up fast. She began to wonder if that was where they were going.
“We’re here Ms. Walker.” Donovan exclaimed as he took his hand off the steering wheel and placed it on hers giving it a quick squeeze while he smiled and put the car in park. He quickly got out of the car and ran around the front of the car to open the door for her.
“Please call me Phoenix.” She said smiling as she took his hand and got out of the car. Taking his arm as she got out of the car, they walked to the boardwalk. He escorted her to a corner table overlooking the beach, and handed her a menu.
“What’s your poison? Milady” His tone was lighter and he smiled before biting his bottom lip and saying “Phoenix” His eyes danced staring at her while she thumbed through the menu.
“How does a shrimp basket with fries and a coke?” She met his smile, and then stared at him adoringly.
“You like shakes?”
“Yeah”
“You know this place has some of the best strawberry shakes I‘ve ever had. Want one of those instead?”
“That’s sounds great. Can you have them make it extra thick?” She asked raising her eyebrows just a bit, giving him a devilish smile.
“Darling, your wish is my command.” He bowed to her before he turned to the counter.
Sitting at the corner table of the deck, Phoenix watched the waves creep up the beach with every new surge. The waves seemed to caress the sand on its way in, slowly stroking it on its way back out, leaving tiny little bubbles behind, playfully marking its path. It was a beautiful sight to take in while feeling the night air flowing across her skin.
Being from the Midwest, she was taking in everything from the scent of the ocean and wet sand to the greasy burger joint and Asian restaurant further down the boardwalk. All the sights and sounds of the beach were new to her, and she was captivated by them. From the dim lights that twinkled along the boardwalk, to the sounds of the people chattering, the music faintly playing from the club nearby to the seagulls running away from the tide and chirping faintly in the distance. It was all wonderful to a small town girl. She had always had a love for the ocean and all of its marvels. Slowly pulling the clip from her hair, she shook her head letting it roll down her back. Her long hair swirled around her in the evening breeze like waves of fire, gently brushing against her cheeks and caressing her shoulders.
Standing at the counter of the little boardwalk burger joint, Donovan watched Phoenix intently. He could tell that she enjoyed the night, or maybe it was the sea. Whatever it was he didn’t care. He just enjoyed watching her, and being in her presence. All he knew was that Phoenix fascinated him. The way she carried herself, and her fiery temper sang to him, there was something else that drew him to her as well, he just wasn’t sure of it yet. There was something special about her. He could get lost in her beautiful baby blue eyes so easily.
He thought, if only I could be so lucky to have a woman like that by my side.
Donovan surveyed the boardwalk and beach before he looked back to Phoenix, his heart began to ache because he knew he could never have a woman such as her. At least not in the way he’d like. The last woman that he loved had died because of her love for him. She was not of his world, and if she knew the beast that he was, he knew she would run. Sure he could take her into his bed, use her, and then disappear, but he wasn’t like that and a woman like Phoenix you didn’t do that to, she was too good for that. Plus she looked like the kind that didn’t like being used and would get even.
“Here ya go sir” the brown haired pimpled face boy behind the counter said as he slid the tray to Donovan. The burger jockey’s white and red uniform was partially covered by a grease soaked apron. He wiped his hands on the front of his apron as he turned and began cleaning the grill.
“Thanks” Donovan said shaking his head before picking up the tray. He turned around in time for the evening breeze to catch him. He could smell her sweet scent floating along with the breeze. The scent began to awaken parts of him that had lain dormant for centuries. Taking in one last wonderful smell he sat the tray down on their table.
“Mmm… That smells good” Phoenix commented
“I hope you like it. I found this place the first week I was out here.” Donovan said there was a strange silence for a moment until Phoenix looked up, licking the cocktail sauce from her lips.
“So… where are you from?” She asked
Swallowing quickly Donovan looked up at her and answered “All over why?”
“Well I noticed you’re accent and I can’t necessarily place it. All I do know is that you’re not from the States.” Phoenix said as she twirled another curly fry around her tongue. Swallowing hard at the sight of her tongue wrapping around the fry so easily, he couldn’t help but think very erotic thoughts.
Damn, why can’t that be me? Donovan thought to himself before he began shifting to re-adjust himself discreetly. “You’re right; I’m not from the states. I was born in Iceland, and then I bounced between Ireland and Scotland until I was eighteen.” Donovan said taking a bite of his rare burger.
“Where did you go after you turned eighteen?” Phoenix questioned again.
“I bounced Europe, Asia and Russia for a few years.” Donovan answered. He knew sooner or later he would run out of sensible answers. In a desperate attempt he asked Phoenix “How long have you been a writer?”
“About two years professionally, but I have always loved to write, ever since I was ten.” Phoenix answered smiling. She always loved talking about her writing career. Actually it was the only thing she didn’t mind talking about. She had fought so hard to get through school, and get her first book published.
“Why romance novels?” Donovan asked trying not to appear to overly eager to change the subject matter from him.
“Excuse me?” Phoenix had a confused look fall across her face, as she chewed her mouth full of fries.
“Why did you choose romance to write about?” Donovan asked rubbing a fry through a pool of ketchup.
“You don’t like talking about yourself; do you?” Phoenix said after studying him for a few minutes. Donovan stopped chewing and swallowed hard.
“I’m… just… interested in… getting to know you.” He flashed a smiled before taking another bite. Her eyebrow lifted to his reaction, and then she threw her head back and laughed.
“But to answer your question, being around bored housewives for most of my adult life, I realized that I enjoyed reading romance novels. I then decided to write them after getting bored with reading them. Plus writing takes me away from a dismal reality. When I write I am carried away into a world of my own. It’s one that I create; I decide who gets the hunk, who gets killed, and who lives. I guess it’s my own sick way of playing God. Next?” she asked before sucking another fry between her wine colored lips.
Looking guilty Donovan said “Why write about vampires and werewolves in romance novels? I mean… their monsters. I think their place would be in horror books, not romance novels.”
“I guess, because a regular love story is all too boring for me, I need some suspense, thrill… danger.” She answered leaning forward, lifting her brow to reveal an evil eye and devilish grin, then quickly returned to sucking on her strawberry shake, then feverishly licking the excess from her lips before she finished. “By adding monsters, as you call them, to the storyline makes it more interesting, and adventurous. It takes the reader to another world where anything can happen, and everything is possible. I know I’m not the only one who thinks that way.” She giggled “Otherwise I would not be in business. Plus every vampire romance novel I’ve read, a vampire seems to be more of a sexual creature, than a monster.”
“Do you believe in vampires?” Donovan asked with a serious look in his eye. Leaning forward, resting his elbows on the table. He impatiently awaited her response. He was dying to find out how she would answer this question. The look that crept across his face was one of intensity.
“That my sweet man is a loaded question and a double edged sword all in one.” Phoenix answered laughing a little.
“Why do you say that?” Donovan said looking more determined than ever to make her answer the question.
“It’s complicated.” Phoenix answered as she inhaled and exhaled a deep breath. Donovan couldn’t help but notice her breasts expand and almost barrel out of her corset style top, when she inhaled. Damn I need to ask her more complicated questions. Maybe if it was complicated enough she’ll come out of her top. He thought to himself with a smile.
“Ok, here it goes. If I say yes, then you’ll think I’m a crack pot. If I say no, then it will sound like I’m just writing out of my ass, and don’t even believe in the things I write about. So, to the question of… can a person drink blood to survive, have a serious allergy to sunlight and live until someone chops off their head, or stabs them through the heart with a wooden stake? Yes, even I know that there are things in this world that I can’t explain, and to be honest I really don’t want to know. I think it makes the world more interesting not knowing exactly what is out there.” she said then looked at Donovan who looked somewhat confused by her answer.
Looking at the skyline, he thought if you knew exactly what was out there, even what’s in front of you right this minute; you would go home, lock your door, and never go outside ever again. “I don’t think that answered my question.” Donovan said as he sat back in his chair crossing his arms, with a lifted eyebrow “A simple yes or no will work.”
“Ok, yes” Phoenix snapped sitting back in her own chair “Happy?” her brows scrunched together at how annoyed he was.
“Thank you” Donovan sat forward smiling. He reached across the table to wipe a smudge of ketchup from her cheek, caressing it softly, she leaned into his touch. The feel of his skin on hers made her heart skip a beat. Unfamiliar warmth fluttered through her, like a tidal wave of desire.
“So… you think I’m a crack pot? Phoenix asked as if she was a scolded child.
“Don might, but I surely don’t, even a man like me knows dat vampires exist. Actually I have one for a best friend.” A deep, silky voice flowed into the conversation.
“What are you doing here Markus?” Donovan asked a tall, tan man of Asian descent that stood lurking in the shadows of the boardwalk. Quietly he made his way to the table, smiling down at Phoenix as if she were going to be his late night snack. The feel of his stare burned into the side of her face, neck and chest. She was unsettled by his presence, but thrilled by it all at the same time. The mixtures of emotions that flowed through her in his presence were nerve racking.
“I was just out following up on a lead in an investigation I’m working on and saw the two of you sitting here, eating and thought I’d just stroll over and say hi” the man answered in a husky voice not taking his baby blue eyes away from Phoenix. He knew his gaze was making her uncomfortable, and he was enjoying every second of it. He could smell her discomfort, yet he could feel her unsettled feelings towards him. It warmed his blood, giving him a thrill of his own. Throwing a devilish grin in Donovan’s direction he reached down and took her slightly tanned hand into his golden-brown, perfectly manicured hand and said “I am Markus, Donovan’s partner in crime and you are…?”
She opened her mouth to answer him, but fell speechless. Before Markus could bring her hand to his lips for a kiss Donovan snatched it and growled “Her name is Phoenix, she’s my date this evening. Now goodnight... Markus.”
“Ooo… don‘t gotta be so protective bro. I didn’t mean to intrude.” Markus said winking at Phoenix, to taunt Donovan. She could tell that there was some sort of camaraderie between them. Still thinking about it she wouldn’t even taunt a man the size of Donovan. He stood 6’6” and looked like he would get serious real fast. Markus wasn’t anything to thumb her nose at either. He was 5’11”, and had a lot more muscle mass than Donovan, but Donovan was tall and seemed solid, his body mass would have made him less agile than Markus, but that was still a lot of height advantage to be giving up.
“Don’t start it” Donovan demanded smiling as he gave Markus a shove, causing him to take a few steps back to regain his balance. He laughed at Donovan’s horseplay, as he stumbled, then plowed back into Donovan for a payback.
Phoenix looked past the men and their horsing around, to see something moving in the shadows, something… not human. The closer it stalked its way to them her eyes widened in fear as the creature emerged from the darkness. Its grey colored skin reflected the lights of the boardwalk. Razor sharp talons emerged on its hands and feet as the street lights from the boardwalk fell upon them. A mouth full of needle like teeth gleamed when it came into the neon lighting of Asian restaurant. Its eyes glowed bright yellow from the shadows that held its face. It had all the physical characteristics of a gargoyle, but this had horns, and tendons stretching across its body. It was a lot scarier than any gargoyle picture she had ever seen... The creature slowly stalked its way closer to them, staying in the shadows until the light of the boardwalk burger joint revealed the shadow that held its face.
“Donovan, behind you” Phoenix screamed franticly.

Chapter One
“Yeah” Phoenix said quietly as she picked up her cell phone while signing the latest copy of her book Deadliest Desires.
“So… How’s your book signing going?” Steve asked
“Pretty good… It was slow at first but it has picked up over the past hour or so. People must really like this book.” Phoenix answered smiling as she signed another book and handed it back to her fan.
“Thank you. I loved your last book so much. I can’t wait to read this one.” The petite dark haired girl said with a smile as she took her book. Phoenix watched her walk away and found her to be an interesting individual with her long baggie black gothic wide legged pants with chains drooping down. The combat boots she wore were new and tightly laced, but the part that caught her attention the most was the jade green trimmed in black lace bustier she wore. It may have been considered inappropriate for most people but she pulled it off nicely. Her short black hair gently curving around her lower jaw, when the lights skimmed across it, it changed to a deep red. She kept it slicked down tightly and parted in the middle. Her honey tan skin meshed with the dark colors. As she watched her gothic angel disappear among the numerous patrons of the small store, Phoenix noticed a gentleman sitting in the front window, flipping through the pages of her newest book while drinking from a Styrofoam cup. He glanced up at her then smiled before returning to his book. His smile was warm and friendly, very inviting. Phoenix couldn’t help but to smile in return. She couldn’t help but to keep looking up from her signings to see if he was watching her.
“I’m sorry for not being able to take this trip with you, but I had this… thing come up here in New York. You know how it goes.” Steve said chuckling “If it can happen it will, and when the big man wants you somewhere you have to go… Any who I’ll let you go, wouldn‘t want to keep you from your adoring fans.” Steve said with a slight chuckle. She could hear the stubble from his chin rake across the microphone of the phone, as he smiled making a static like sound.
“OK, well then I’ll talk to you later.” Phoenix said with a look of sheer confusion on her face. Even though Steve was always short and sweet that conversation seemed to be a bit odd, even for Steve.
“Bye” Steve said in a hasty manner.
“Steve, wait… Steve” Phoenix tried to catch him before he was able to hang up. “Damn” she said tossing the phone on her table. Glancing down at the screen she noticed that the call was still connected. She picked the phone back up and placed it to her ear hoping to catch him. She could faintly hear Steve’s voice. Phoenix slowed her breathing and listened closer.
“Well… She bought it love. I never thought she’d buy it. Your ass is mine the entire week-end. She won‘t be back for a few days.” Steve said to someone. Phoenix turned up the volume on her phone and pressed the phone closer to her ear, her breathing slowed even further. She could hear a rustling through the phone. She could distinctly hear the sounds of two people kissing, and thought to herself he bailed on me this weekend for a piece of ass? Damn what a jerk... That’s not being very professional if you ask me. While in deep thought of what she was hearing she heard a familiar voice that sent chills down her spine and brought her back to a reality that she wasn’t ready for. Phoenix immediately blocked everything out around her. Her arms broke out in a barrage of small goose bumps. A cold chill prickled up her spine and across her shoulders as she listened to that familiar voice and a cruel conversation playing out in her ear.
“She has always been easy to fool. She’ll believe anything you tell her I have never met someone so gullible before. You would not believe the things I’ve gotten away with over the past few years. All you gotta do is give her a logical explanation and you’re golden. She's so gullible, she'll believe anything. I had planned a few things for this weekend with her out of my hair, but I never expected this.” the familiar voice said with a chipper laugh. “Now come here I’ve been dying to kiss you for a long time.” two deep moans followed the smacking sounds of two people kissing. “You have no idea how much I enjoy doing that.” Steve laughed loudly at the comment.
“Mmm… Adam this feels good.” Steve said with a long exhale and slight moan.
“You know Steve, she never touches me like this. Actually it takes an act of congress to get her to touch me at all these days.” Adam exclaimed “Plus Phoenix is such a bore in the bedroom. It’s the same thing every time, the same position, the same foreplay… it’s so boring, and no wonder I can’t keep it hard for her. You know she’s even got that tongue ring and she won’t even suck my dick. She wouldn’t know what hot sex was if it jumped up and slapped her on the ass.” Adam said with a low moan as if he was being pleasured. “Oh damn baby, didn’t think you could suck that hard.”
“I’d like to poke you in the ass.” Steve said jokingly.
“Hey, gentle!” Adam reprimanded “We don’t want to leave any marks. Phoenix might think I’m seeing another woman and then I’ll be out of that new 2009 Camaro that’s coming out next month.” Adam laughed. “You know that as long as I keep her somewhat happy I get everything I want.” Adam said with a smug tone.
“How true, how true… Mmm you taste so good.” a smacking sound came over the phone followed by Adams’s moans of pleasure. “And remember I get a 20% commission on everything she makes as well. Adam, life is good. As long as we keep her busy promoting and making money, we can’t lose.” The sound of a bed creaking filled the phone. A loud banging noise that resembled her headboard hitting the wall soon followed. Adam and Steve’s moans followed by hisses of pleasure blared through the phone so loudly she had to pull it away from her ear.
Tears began welling up in her baby blue eyes, so quickly she couldn’t see in front of her. Her senses slowly began to reawaken; she became aware of her surroundings once again. The feeling of betrayal, humiliation and rage started to rumble deep within her, her face grew hot; it was more than she could control. The table in front of her started to shake uncontrollably, soon the light above her burst from its socket, raining shards of glass down on top of her and the store manager.
“Earthquake, A dark haired clerk behind the counter yelled out.” “Everyone take cover.” Phoenix ducked her head down quickly, and started running over to a serene corner of the tiny bookstore, where there were no books, no tables, and no people. The dim lighting of the book store corners made it easier to hide from the panicked people and try to preserve as much of her dignity as possible, while trying to hide her shaking hands, and the tears streaming down her face. Her makeup began to stain the front of her white silk blouse. People inside the bookstore crowded to the front door and ran out into the streets frantically.
She quickly wiped her nose with her shirt sleeve and placed the phone back to her ear. The feeling of disbelief had completely consumed her.
She didn’t understand why she had been sent to this bookstore, when she seen the smallness of it. Even though it was a quaint little store that seemed to be doing well for its size. Steve had never sent her to a place so small, but the reasons for his actions were becoming very clear. Something deep inside her had told her not to come on this trip. That gut feeling she always listened to was screaming at her, but Adam and Steve had both urged her to go. They would not take no for an answer. Steve had said it would be a life changing experience. Boy was he right!
In the dimly lit corner away from everyone, she could hear their moans of pleasure still. Fury flew through her in waves; she had just about heard enough when she heard Adam’s voice.
“Steve, what is that?” Adam asked with a curious tone. He sounded breathless. His heavy breathing could be heard easily through the phone.
“I don’t know.” Steve answered. The bed creaked under Steve’s weight as he moved. ”Oh shit, I’m still connected. It must not have disconnected when I closed it.” Steve sounded horrified.
“What?” Adam said, the bed creaking even further. “Is she still there? Oh my god… Was she listening? “Adam whispered with the same terror.
“Phoenix… Hello…Are you there…? ” Steve asked breathlessly, while listening quietly, he could faintly hear Phoenix’ heavy breathing and uncontrolled sobbing.
“I’m here…and yes… I heard everything.” she cleared her nose and exhaled through her mouth. “How could you? How could he?” Phoenix sobbed into the phone.
“Phoenix… I… I never meant for any of this to happen, I really mean that. We never wanted to hurt you. Adam’s a great guy.” A silence fell across the conversation. “You just don’t… pay enough attention to him. You’re never home anymore. You’ve just been too busy with your career.” Steve’s tone was as if it was a good excuse to be sleeping with her finance`.
Fury flew through Phoenix at those words. Her face heated and her head throbbed with the rush of blood. Pressing her fingers to her temples she tried to relieve the pressure, but she couldn’t. She tried hard to suppress her anger, but she felt too much betrayal to control anything.
“You didn’t mean for this to happen?” her tone grew louder and sharp. “No… what you mean is you didn’t mean to get caught. “She hissed “For your information I did pay attention to him, every chance I had.” her voice grew even louder with rage. “You were the one that was keeping me too busy with my career. You always had me on the road doing signings, and promotions. I am the one who was ignored and who has been unappreciated, even when I am home he isn’t and didn’t seem to want me even when he was there. Now I know why. He was too busy screwing you.” Phoenix gritted her teeth as she scowled into the phone, her words coursed through the airwaves stinging Steve‘s ear.
“You’re fired” Phoenix hissed “As soon as I hang up, I’m calling the publishing house and having you fired. I’m sure sleeping with the clients, or people associated with the clients is strictly forbidden, and as for Adam I’ll deal with him personally when I get home.” Pressing the end key and slamming her cell phone shut, she ended the call abruptly.
Taking in a deep breath and gathering her composer as she walked back to her table unbuttoning her silk blouse, and removing it due to the makeup stains on the front revealing a corset style top. She slowly turned around after dabbing her eyes, only to be met by the tall, tan gentleman that had been thumbing through her book at the front window. His dirty blonde hair effortlessly fell across his shoulders as he leaned down to place his hands on the table. The bright platinum highlights streaking down his hair framed his beautiful face nicely. As he looked at her a platinum strand fell freely over one eye, before he tucked it neatly behind one ear. He smiled as he pushed the book towards her. Phoenix glanced up to meet his gaze, and was met by a set of jade green eyes. The longer she looked into his eyes, the more they seemed to sparkle.
He was wearing a tight pair of blue jeans with wear marks in the knees, and crotch, the plain black t-shirt he wore gently hugged every curve of his body from his tan neckline to his whittled waist. His shirt was firmly tucked behind an unsnapped leather vest. He smiled at her as she opened the book to its cover page to sign it. As she looked into his eyes, she found it easy to hide her emotions and forget her anguish. She warmly returned his smile before looking down to sign his book.
“Who is this to?” Phoenix asked warmly glancing up into his eyes.
“Your biggest fan…” he chuckled. “ My name is Donovan… Ms. Walker” his voice was deep and warm. It flowed over her like a warm shower, flooding her with a warm tingly feeling that almost chilled her to the bone. “I believe this is your second book, I loved the first one so much. Now that I’ve seen you in person, I realize that your photo in the book doesn’t do you justice.”
“Thank you” Phoenix smiled sweetly and batted her eyes shyly, while thinking to herself. What is it about this man that makes me feel like a stupid school girl?
“Tell me… “He said as he leaned his elbows on the table and looked into her eyes. “How is it that a beautiful woman such as you would write about such monsters as demons, vampires and werewolves? “He said seeming very interested in her reply.
“Actually, I’ve been a fan of preternatural films and books every since I was a small child. My father use to take me to every vampire/werewolf flick that came to theatres.” Phoenix answered signing the inside page:
To: Donovan, my biggest and sexiest fan!
Love Phoenix Walker
“Are you doing anything after you leave here? Cause I‘d love to talk with you more, I think you have a lot of interesting views.” Donovan asked taking the book from her hand. He gently brushed his fingers across the back of her hand before lifting the book from her. His caress sent warm sensations through her hand, up her arm, and across her chest giving her a slight case of butterflies. Her blood rushed to her cheeks as she thought to herself.
I’d like to fly home, strangle my agent while my cheating fiancé watched, and he says I’m a bore in the bedroom? Bastard can’t even get it up for me. Now I know why; He likes dicks instead of chicks. I guess he was too tired from his extracurricular affairs with my agent thinking and plotting. How they were going to rip me off. I would never have guessed it. I went with Steve because I thought I could trust him. I thought I had nothing to worry about, Steve was gay. I never suspected that Adam was bisexual. He had only had girlfriends to my knowledge. Damn, I never saw this one coming, now I know why Adam tried his hardest to get me to believe that he was at our house a lot because he was interested in me. Now I know it was Adam he was interested in. Hmm… it’s funny how a small thing could answer so many questions and change your life. As the thoughts raced through her fire flew through her eyes again. She glanced up at his beautiful face and gazed back into his eyes, they were like jumping into two pools of cool water. The fury melted away as she stuttered
“N…No… I’m not doing anything after this. Why?” Phoenix looking like a deer caught in the head lights.
“Good because I’d like for you to accompany me for an espresso or maybe even dinner or something.” Donovan answered smiling a brilliant warm smile and batting his gleaming eyes. Sitting from her point of view at the table he looked adorable. Phoenix could tell he was a very tall man, and judging by the size of his shoulders and hands, she could only imagine what he looked like beyond that tight black t-shirt, jeans and leather vest.
I wonder what Adam would think about me going out with him? He’d have a fit, and forbid it. I thought we were in a committed relationship. I guess that’s why dad used to always say “That’s what you get for thinking.” Maybe I was fool. I shouldn’t do this. She thought to herself before looking up at him.
“I’d love to.” Phoenix answered looking up through her widened baby blue eyes with a devilish grin.
“Well whenever you’re finished, I’ll be over there at my table.” Donovan said as he tucked his book under his arm and winked before he began walking back to his table like a little boy with a new toy. The sight of him was almost endearing enough to make her forget about Steve and Adam.
After another hour of monotonous signing, she had kept looking up to see if Donovan was still sitting in the front window. When the clock struck nine and she signed her last book, she sighed quietly. Gathering her things, she hurried over to the gorgeous creature at the table in the window, who was reading her book instead of thumbing through it.
“Hey there, are you ready for me?” Phoenix said gently biting her bottom lip, slightly twisting from side to side like a school girl with a crush.
“Hey… yes I am.” Glancing up, Donovan greeted her with a smile. “Are you hungry? Cause I know this really great place on the boardwalk. Want to grab a bite?”
“Uh-Yeah, actually I am hungry. I only crammed down a hot dog between signings today. I accidentally overslept this morning, and have been running late the whole day.” Phoenix answered with a sheepish grin. “Not to mention the room service at the hotel was a little less than to be desired.” The look of disgust on her face made Donovan break out in laughter.
“Well, tell me the hotel and I’ll make sure never to stay there. “He snickered as he opened his arm to escort her to the store. Walking to the door the store manager approached.
‘Ms. Walker… Ms. Walker” his nasally sounding voice sent shivers down her spine. The little man approached fast in his baggy khaki colored pants, and white dress shirt, covered with a sweater vest of many checkered colors. He adjusted his glasses before he spoke again. “I… I just wanted to thank you for coming today, and make sure that all was well with you. The earthquake we had earlier must have scared the hell out of you.” he snorted with a tiny laugh. “I mean with you being from the Midwest and all.” He seemed very nervous while talking. He rubbed his hands frequently and couldn’t stand still.
“I am fine; the earthquake didn’t bother me at all. I knew coming out here I may have to encounter one. It was no problem really.” Phoenix smiled nervously, edging her way to the door; the little man’s nervousness was making her nervous.
“Now if you’ll excuse us, I have a date with Ms. Walker” Donovan interrupted then gently guided her out the door.
Stepping outside the door of the store Phoenix could feel a slight chill in the air. The scent of the city filled her senses. Donovan suddenly stopped and looked intently around the parking lot, then the roof tops.
“Is something wrong?” Phoenix asked curiously as she looked around and to the roof tops as well. She had a funny feeling she was being watched, that gut feeling she always listened to was telling her something bad was going to happen.
“No everything is ok. I thought I heard something.” He smiled reassuringly at her then placed his hand on the small of her back, quickly leading her to his car. He didn’t notice that she was watching him look over his shoulder down the dark alley behind them as he came around the car.
It had been a longtime since she had went out, especially with another man. Adam hadn’t taken her out in years.
