Chapter one: Wake Up and Dream

My name is Laura, for centuries I have slept, and where I have slept has surprised many people. My bed has a canopy of vines surrounding a concrete slab mounted on wooden planks over a grave that once belonged to my enemy that I, with my own hands, has slain.

My concrete slab faced the rising sun; greenish-blue vines tangling in the mahogany-wooden support beams that held it in place. The vine grew over me, covering my hourglass-like figure, and growing up the planks that acted as a head board for the feathered fabrics I laid upon.

It wasn’t until I awoke that I realized how long I have slept. It’s been over 230 years has gone by since I slaughtered my unforgettable enemy. I opened my eyes to the dim sunlight of the early morning, my golden-brown eyes lingering on the environment that I now was in. It was still the deep forest that I slain my last kill, still the same concrete slab I had made for me, but the time seemed strange to me.

I remembered I was no more then seventeen, or at least looked that way. My hair was long, past the middle of my back, and black, usually tied up in a red bow. I usually had on a black dress with a slit up to the middle of my hip on the right side, unless I was training. However, I was formal. Raised that way. Grew up to be a leader, with a feminine elegance, if that was at all possible.

230 years ago in the middles of June, I was standing on the edge of a cliff along side the coven master, over looking the dark blue waters below. His name was Trevor. He had short brown hair, and he was even clean shaven as well; He had Pale skin and deep blue eyes that skimmed the surface of the waters. Oh, how I used to love his eyes! They were compassionate, kind… mischievous. It was clear that he was one of the most beautiful vampires. It was odd to me though, he had so many emotions mixed up inside of his soul. He was in pain most of the time, and I could feel it as his hand trembled in mine as I held his.

“Are you okay?” I asked worriedly.

“Yes, Laura, I am fine.” He smiled wryly not looking at me, in fact, he turned his head completely to where I couldn’t see the hurt in his eyes.

I let my hand drop heavily to my side. I could no longer bare to feel the hurt in him, for it pained me to feel it. I turned my back against the crashing ocean and begun to walk away. It was odd to me, he was keeping secrets from his coven. Was it that terrible? Were we not worthy of his trust and loyalty? Only he could answer these, and in the back of my mind, I knew it was something far more dangerous then any thing.

As I walked away from Trevor, I felt he’s gaze on my back watching me from afar on the cliff. I heard him whisper, “I’m sorry.” At that I spun quickly, but he was out of site. I ran back to the cliff, looking over into the deep sea.

“Trevor!” I screamed, tears streaming down my face.

Only silence replied.

“Trevor! Trev..” I clanged to the edge of the cliff trying to control my absolute anger and fear I felt creeping up inside of me, as I closed my eyes tightly.

Another one of the villagers rushed to my side, afraid, “Laura? Are you alright?” Said a mans voice.

I shook my head, “Trevor..” I whispered hardly audible.

The man knelt beside me throwing his arms around my waist his head close to mine, “What’s wrong with Trevor?”

I grimaced at the sound of his name, as I stared blankly in the wide open sea below me, the waves crashing upon the shore casting a dark like across the sand. My mind raced with excruciating thoughts. I couldn’t believe he jumped. Who would take his place at the head of the coven? It couldn’t be me, I had no experience with leading at this time. I couldn’t lead these people, not at a time like this, not now.

The man picked me up and cradled me in his arms, and started back to the four-story mansion that I stayed in with Trevor. The walk was long, I could see blurs of people faces and houses. The trees has stopped swaying as the wind froze in its place. It felt as if time has just stopped, it was treacherous. I hated it, I hated the village, I hated these people, I hated the coven. It all hung my mind the whole way to the mansion. The hatred, the anger, the fear, it was all there inside of me.

The man walked through the threshold of the doors, walking past photos of the early years that I arrived. He then walked up the dim-lighted, long, winding mahogany staircase to the second floor and walked through the long corridor with dark red walls which was lit by pure-white candles perched a long the walls. He opened the second to last door on the right side and walked in.

The room was as dim as the rest of the house, red candles against a white wall casting brilliant shadows on the furniture. There was a bed with a red open canopy. He place me down on the bed pulling the covers over me.

“Laura, sleep now, and tell me what happened when you wake.” He smiled gracefully, leaving my side.

I laid there, my golden-brown eyes focusing on the high ceiling above me. Tears lingered on my cheeks. My mind still racing, retracing what has happened, I still couldn’t believe anything.

Slowly I slipped to unconsciousness. Felling waves of coldness wash over me and slowly my breathing stopped…

I quickly opened my eyes to the soft, cool wind on my face. I realized I was setting beside the grave with my concrete bed. I then realized that in my mind, while I slept, was re-living the past. Yet, I still had tears in my eyes, “I hate dreams like that.” I said to myself.

I felt eyes lingering on my back, “Hello there.” A young girls voice said be hind me, “Are you alright? Do you need help?”

I slowly turned to stare at her. Her skin was light, yet darker then my own and her hair was black and long, much like mine. Her eyes were dark blue as the last ocean I once knew. She wore a pink skirt that fell to her knees and a light blue top with white kittens on the lower left side.

“What?” I managed to say.

The girl smiled warmly at me, “Are you alright?”

“Uh, yes, I guess I’m fine.” I said quietly.

“I saw you here sleeping and was wondering if you would like some help.” The girl walked happily to my side and knelt beside me. “You must be the woman that slept on that slab there,” she pointed to my concrete bed, “Every one in town was wondering when you’d wake up.”

I straighten up, “the town?”

She nodded back to the woods, “through there.”

“take me there!” I demanded.

“Alright then,” she flashed brilliant bleach-white straight teeth. “Please, if you well, follow me.” She turned as the wind blew her long hair, I caught glimpse of a red bow tied loosely in the back.

I stood up, as gracefully as I could after many centuries of slumber, and dusted my self off. I watched her walk, every step was precise, I followed stumbling slightly trying to remember how to use these legs, and eventually got straight to walk as gracefully as she did. Her cat-like figure disappeared into the dense woods of greens, yellows, red, and blues.

“Hey, girl?” I hollered after her.

She stopped before a clearing in the woods, birds chirped excitedly, and the wolves and other wild beast howled and growled wildly as I walked to catch up. “What is your name? You never did tell me.”

“Raven.” She said pushing tall weeds out of the way revealing a village, “Here we are.”

I skimmed the village every inch of it is what I have seen in my dream. The edge of the corner, a tall four-story, black, and grey mansion stood. And on the far left of the edge was a cliff over looking a dark blue body of water, “I know this place.” I said as I fell unconscious again as the memories filled my head.

I sat on the edge of the cliff waiting for a sign that Trevor was still out there some where. A tall man sat beside me “Laura, its been a week since he left us. You are still depressed, you should have move on by now.”

“Kane, I know how long he’s been away, but still, he left with out saying bye to any one.” I responded coolly not even trying to hide the frustration in my voice.

“Laura, you are the last one that talked to him. He said he was sorry, perhaps he had to do what he did for…” I cut him off before he could finish.

“No! I refuse to believe any thing like that. He left us, I hate him now!” I lied. “He left me in charged… and I plan to become a better leader then he could ever be in his life time.”

Kane sighed, “Laura, please listen to me?”

I shook my head free of the incoming tears, and rose to my feet and ran off. “I wont believe any thing till I find him, and talked to him myself”

“Laura?” I heard a girls voice call out too me. “Laura, its me, Raven.”

My eyes opened, and brilliant lights from the ceiling filled around me, temporarily blinding. I threw my hands over my eyes trying to focus on the faces around me. “Raven?”

“Yes, I’m here, right beside you.” She said her smile no longer on her face. Her eyes were full of worries.

“Where am I?” I asked tiredly.

“You in the mansion, you passed out when you saw the village.” Raven explained. “I had Kane bring you down.

“Kane?” I glanced around the room till I saw his familiar face. I smiled.

“Laura.” He smiled slightly. “We were all afraid…” He converted his brown eyes to the right as if he was remembering something bad.

I sighed ,”Kane, you don’t have to stand there by the wall, you can come closer to the bed.” I offered him a hand to come by my side.

He obeyed, “Laura… Tre… did you find him yet?” His eyes pleading to me.

“I… I don’t know, has he yet to return to us?” I asked saddened.

“No, at least we don’t see him. We guarded you as you slept… yet in the morning there would always be yellow and red roses on the concrete next to your head in a pure white-as-snow vase. We don’t know who put them there.” Raven stated. “We tried to keep watch all around you, but there’s always roses there, we never see any one sneak by us.”

I threw my legs over the edge of the bed and quickly stood. Raven had tears streaming down her face as she rushed into my arms, “Laura, we’ve waited so long for you and you are here now. You are the leader, the coven master again.” She sobbed

I gently pulled her off of me, and walked down the long corridor of the mansion. And walked down the long winding staircase, nothing has changed. This place, I hated it. I looked into the living room, the large fireplace looked as if it never been used in a long while. I imagined Trevor setting there, with me beside him, staring together as the flames danced for us.

I walked slowly out side, hoping to get out of the empty mansion. The village has grown in size, more people walked the paved streets. I rushed to the cliff that Trevor and I stood for the last time hand-in-hand. I looked out to the ocean, waves crashing into the sandy shore. “Trevor,” I whispered “Where are you now?”

I felt a rough hand on my shoulder, I looked up at the person and it seemed as if he hasn’t shaved in months or even years. His eyes seemed grey as if smoke was rising from a fire, and lonely. “He still with you, I’m sure.” He said in a harsh voice.

“Really? He left me with no explanations other then ‘I’m sorry’” I replied trying to hide my fears with no avail.

“I’m sure he had his reasons.” The man said looking out into the sea.

I had to laugh, “Funny, every one tells me that same thing. Yet, no one cares to tell me why.” I stood up, and turned to face him.

“Well, I am sorry no one has cared to explain, but I hope you find him soon, your heart aches for him, doesn’t it? He stated the obvious.

“How would you know?” I asked curiously, “have you seen him?”

“No, no, I haven’t, but we are in the same boat together, my heat longs for some one else as well… but that some one was what I could not have, though I have tried to get her, but she was too young.” He said as he turned and walked away.

“Hmm, what an odd individual,” I said quietly to myself, “How did he know who I was looking for?”

Kane rushed up to my side, “who was that that was just up here?” he asked protectively.

“I’ve no idea, but he’s a little bit creepy to me.” I smiled.

“Alright then. Hey, you want to train with me?” He asked.

“Train?”

“Yes, you’ve been a sleep for how long? I bet you forgot how to fight.” he said sarcastically.

I nodded in agreement. “Sure I’ll train with you.”

“Great. Show me what you can do first when we get there and I’ll help you if I see any flaws” Kane explained excitedly while we walked off the cliff and near the forest.

We came to the clearing of the forest, where my concrete slab was. I looked at it. The vines torn and split from disturbances. Strangely it did not disturb me to see it. “So I’m guessing this is where we well be?”

“Yes, it is. Only clearing for like 80 miles.” Kain stated.

“Oh, nice.” I smiled at the though of untouched land.

“Okay hate to break up the day dreams, but, we do have to get to work now.” He handed me two katana. “You do remember how to use double Katana don’t you?”

“I’m not sure.” I said truthfully, “But shouldn’t I get out of this dress first?”

Kane looked at me a forgetful expression on his face, “Uh, yeah, if you want, or you could fight in a dress for all I care.” He smiled mischievously.

“Where’s the training uniforms at now?” I smirked.

He walked to a fat bush and rambled through it pulling out a large box, big enough for at least 2 overly sized deer. He broke it open and pulled out clothes that looked as if the Indians has made them, tan buck skin. He threw one to me, this time it was black, and shined like a leather shoe. I quickly put it on in the privacy of the trees.

I was ready, katana at my side like a faithful companion, he was ready too, no changes, except his expression was hard, leaner, and meaner. His eyes were black with fake anger. “Lets get this started.” He ordered in a husky voice.

I smiled ruefully at him, eyes narrowed, as I pulled out one of my katana, and charged after him. In one swift motion, and before he had chance to dodge and counter-attack mine, I nipped him with my sword. As I skid to a stop I spun around. His eyes wide with shock.

With a deftness that seemed to never have left me I leapt forward. As I saw him gather himself and prepare in stance, my instincts took over. My mind raced, calculating all the angles, all the possibilities, and all the mistakes he made that I could play off of. Leading in with my right hand I made a simple slash. I didn’t want to end the fight too fast. I needed to let him make a mistake, and more, as to prevent any of mine, or at least lessen them.

The wind blew, and the leaves from the trees fell, one by one and then by few. My hair swayed in front of my face with the turns, flips. and twists of all our movements as I shook it all behind me as quickly as I could. As the clang of our blades shrill through the air, all of my previous experience, all of my previous spars, all of my victories, it came to me like a flooding river.

As he blocked my strike, he countered, leading a streaking blade across my cheek. "you'd better wipe your cheek, your bleeding." His leering smirk tried to drive me to anger, but anger is weakness, the last thing I needed.

Before I could even think of my next move, he was dashing towards me, I had to think fast. When I was ready for his onslaught, he switched his attack, bounding into the air, however, that was his mistake. I smiled savagely at him, at his mistake. So, as he leaped, almost flying over my head, we caught glimpses, and I could see he knew that the outcome of this spar would not end well. I dug my blade into his calf, then with all my might, I pulled him straight down, slinging him head first to the ground.

He moaned as he sat up, and pulled the katana out of his calf, and glared at me, “are you trying to kill me?” His voice was angry.

“Hey, you asked me to show you what I could do and so I did.” I replied bitterly.

“That is because I didn’t know you could do all that. I swear, you act like Trevor now!” He stopped, his eyes filled up of surprise and sorrow as he stared up at me.

“Trevor… I don’t act like Trevor, I never seen him train let a lone fight!” I felt hot streams of tears running down my cheeks blending in with the blood that was still dripping. “You are cruel now!” I ran off back to the village where I could lock myself up in my empty room and be a lone.

I flung myself to the bed. Not even bothering to change clothes. I don’t remember who long it took but I cried myself to sleep.

“Laura, come back!” I could Hear Kain calling after me on the cliff. “I’m sorry… please listen to me!”

“Go away! Leave me a lone or I’ll kill you!” I warned. “You are cruel.”

I ran, till I came to the clearing of the forest. It was full of light, roses and dandelions and other beautiful wild flowers were scattered all through out. I sat in the middle. My eyes narrow with anger and hatred.

I felt a hand on my shoulder, “hello, why are you crying child?” A man asked in a soothing tone.

“Because, every one is cruel.” I replied not looking up at him.

“And that is the world dear child.” From the corner of my eye I watched him set right next to me. “Its pleasant here isn’t it?”

I nodded looking at him. Brown hair cut short, brown eyes and the dirt below us. His skin a [ale tan. He say me looking at him, he smiled politely.

“What is your name child?” He asked curiously.

“Laura… and yours?’

“A.J. that’s what people calls me at least. I really don’t know my real name that my human parents given me.” He said, his eyes focused on the sky, “No matter. My name is only to help identify me, it is not who I am.”

I nodded. “Have you seen a man, named Trevor?” I asked hopeful of an yes.

A.J thought for a moment, “no, that name does not ring a bell at all. I am sorry, is he messing?”

“He jumped off a cliff.” I lowered my eyes to the grass waving peacefully with the wind.

“I see. Do you have any clues as to why?” A.J asked looking at me.

I shook my head, “every one refuses to tell me what was wrong with him. I hate them all for that.”

“Well, why don’t you come with me then dear child? I can help you find him.” He offered, as he stood with is long fingers stretched out to me.

Hesitantly, I took his hand. The wind blew hard and cold and I place my free hand behind me so the wind wouldn’t blow skirt of my dress up. I stared into his hypnotizing eyes, and his smile was graceful. He lead me to the far left edge of the forest, where he has kept his dark-as-night black stead.

“His name is Sanguine.” He informed me.

“Pretty name.” I responded.

A.J helped me mount Sanguine and mounted himself. With one kick to the horses side we were off, flying almost…

I felt a cold hand on my head, “Laura?” I heard an unrecognizable voice call out my name.

As I slowly opened my eyes a wave of bright, blinding, white light fill came rushing to me. “Who.. who are you?” I asked drowsily.

It was a female. Her flaming red hair whisked behind her as she pulled it back, and her black eyes were like an empty hole, “I am Alice and this is my twin brother Dente.” She pointed to a corner.

Therein the corner was a tall, red haired, black eyed man. He was about 6 foot five inches. His face was well defined, high cheek bones, smooth, and perfect, he raised his hands to me, “hello. We were told you would be here, hope you don’t mind our intrusion?” He asked calmly .

I sat up on my elbows , “no, I don’t mid what can I do for you?” I asked in return.
