Mmmm... coma...

16:17 Jan 29 2012
Times Read: 1,018

...last night we hosted Piesta. A festival of pie.

It was fun. Not quite the turnout we were expecting. Morri and I made humus - some of which Morri made a delicious spicy garden salsa to put on top of it. I experimented and made cup-cake sized chicken pot-pies. The experiment looked like it was going to be a disaster, but they actually came out really good. And of course, I made my now world famous pumpkin pecan pies.

Friends brought Irish Carbomb Cupcakes - I still smell the alcohol of them when I walk into the kitchen... a new friend was convinced to try his hand at baking a key lime pie and he did a great job with it.

In all, we had enough sweets and alcohol infused goodness to put us in a sugar coma today.

Meanwhile, outside a storm raged - 50+ MPH winds, snow, lightning....

It was an interesting night.

Now... what for breakfast?

Gawd no.

One of the guests brought an egg-pie - breakfast variety... his wife made it... it's not very good. He constantly boasts about what an accomplished chef she is...

If you want a copy, I'll happily send it to you.

There is even guinness in the frosting, although I'm sure your cupcakes had bailey's in it...lol

...I swore I would never have a coven. But now I do. But at least it is a coven with a purpose.

See that "Free Members List" other society masters? See how easy it is to now navigate daily, find free members that actually might be of value?

No more losing a level 56 member that was just dropped from their society in the middle of a list of 3,500 names. No more spending extra time weeding from one free account to another, trying to find someone worth inducting only to discover most haven't been on in 4 years or are suspended forever anyway.

And now, when members do return from an extended hiatus, they're greeted back to the site and have the option of becoming more active members in a society of their choosing, where they will be happier and more likely to participate.

Not bragging - just pointing it out. Once in a while it has to be made about something other than power trips and popularity contests. There are some good societies here, and some good people running them. If you find yourself in Limbus and want to look into joining other societies, I can definitely recommend some worthwhile ones.

Mornings...

20:38 Jan 13 2012
Times Read: 1,259

Unnerving morning.

Usually I get to the kids' house around 7:40 and their mom has just left for work or in the process of leaving, the kids are eating breakfast and watching TV....

...this morning I got there... her van was in the driveway. The door was deadbolted, meaning the dog hadn't been let out. I walked in the house to darkness and silence. No TV on... all the lights still out.

This was so unusual, of course, my mind goes to the worst places first... there was a CO leak, the detector didn't go off and they've been breathing poison all night. I could feel my heart beginning to beat harder and stomach starting to knot. But then the dog greeted me in the hallway so I figured everything was ok...

...everyone just overslept. With the winds and weather shift, power had gone out during the night and no alarms went off. Their mom, of course flipped out when I woke her. The kids - well, except the youngest - woke in an immediate panic they would miss the bus. I simply reassured them to take their time, stay out of mom's way and I would drive them to school, which gives them an extra 30 minutes to get ready.

Have to take these things in stride. I keep trying to convince my kids, time isn't always of the essence. There are times you want to get moving and not waste time, but sometimes you just have to say, taking our time is more important than being on time....

Valuable lesson yo gave them. If I was greeted with that scenario my mind would have flow to a break in and I'd have gone for cutlery first then looked around, especially after the dog told you it was not carbon monoxide or something like that. But then I am paranoid to, so that says something about my thought process...lol.

Glad everything turned out ok and you got a chance to teach them something.

If you're on Twitter you have to follow @GhettoHikes. It is a guy that runs nature hikes for inner city kids and then tweets some of the precious things they say. Such as:

"The earth be like, 'today i feel like makin a river.' That's just motherfuckin' mother nature."

Yo we betta not run into any bears, unless it's Smokey, I bet he cool.

You know, it reminds me... a friend of mine is a teacher in the Niagara Falls, NY school district. Niagara Falls, aside from the touristy and park area around the falls themselves on the state side, is industrial, poor and slummy. They say over 3 Million people visit the falls every year - apparently the money raised by tourism doesn't go to improving anything in the city, but that's New York for you.

Anyway, back to my story - in her first year of teaching 2nd grade at this school.... in Niagara Falls... she decided to take her class on a field trip to Niagara Falls State Park.

Many of these 2nd graders.. some of them already pushing 10 years old, got to see the Falls for the first time in their lives.

And they LIVE in Niagara Falls.

Mind you, to go to the Falls state side, there is no admission fee. If you can walk there, you can walk up to the top of the falls and it costs you nothing....

Amazing.

...little else matters in this life other than leading a life that is fulfilling, raising good kids and doing your best to, as Gandhi stated, "be the change you wish to see in the world."

Making those changes is often difficult. You don't get much cooperation from the people around you - everyone has their own agenda, their own slave drivers, their own struggles to fight against. Realizing this is half the battle.

Those that fail to realize this can never truly hope to understand the greater meaning of life.

FYI - the honor system, to me at least, seems like another reward/punishment system for being disrespectful, overly dramatic, dishonest or just an outright douchebag here on the site.

Similar to how blocked/overblocked punishes status for the same - negative honor is more of a billboard shouting, 'I'm an insufferable douchebag - avoid me at all costs.'

Good luck.

Honor.

Maybe the honor system should have a little more weight around here.

If your honor is 0 to.. say.. 50.. you can give/take 5 per day.

If your honor is 50 to... say.. 500... you can give/take 6

...500 to 1000, you can give/take 7...

...1000 to 2000... 8 etc..etc..

if you're in the negative, you get 0.

If you're significantly negative, you lose things... like... your ability to be a mentor ...your ability to be a coven master...

Hmmm... this could make some serious changes around here, couldn't it?

I have to disagree simply on the fact you can see already how it is being abused. Why should someone face potential loss of ability's because one person or perhaps a small few have a grudge and far too much time on their hands?

A coven Master losing their coven over the actions of someone blinded, traded out or even in disagreement with seems a bit extreme to me when the base system used for that is so flawed.

Morrigon

Oh, your blinded members gang up on you to put you in negatives? Well... maybe some diplomacy and tact is then required. Maybe some society cooperation should be employed to trade members to societies they want to be in.

Hey - why should it be some undeniable right to have a mentorship? Fuck that. Too many of them and half the mentors don't know jack shit about this site. They're popularity contests. If you're a big enough douchebag that people feel compelled to dishonor you to deep in the negative numbers, why should you be allowed to mentor anyone or have your own society?

CarnelianMyst
CarnelianMyst
16:07 Jan 08 2012

For those disagreeing with this post, you have merely to check the Honor standings. See those in the bottom ten, with all sorts of negative honor? See any admins or anyone on this site who is considered honest and decent? Nope. That's because all the douchebags are there who belong there. I'm with Birra on this.

ToiletBoy
ToiletBoy
21:03 Jan 08 2012

Well I appreciate your opinions in thinking that I deserve to be on the dishonor list. Except I'VE been bombarded with group dishonor from the zombie hoard. I'm merely calling people out on their crap and hoping against hope that they will wake up and change. So that makes me dishonorable and deserving of being on the bottom? Ok fine I don't want to be a coven master, or an admin. If thats the way you people think I DON'T want to be associated with you.

ToiletBoy
ToiletBoy
07:39 Jan 09 2012

Another flaw to your system as I've just realized, If someone fails to rate a pissy little kid a 10 they will come and take honor from you. As was just done to me. I rated another zombie profile a 1, they came rated me a 1 and took 10 honor. You ask how the system is being abused? THAT'S how it is being abused. No diplomacy issues at all. No words were shared, merely a 1 rate back and the taking of honor. It seems the attempt to make something everyone can do only so many times was a great one, but like any great idea flaws are had. Don't make a NEW popularity contest out of one that is soon becoming another way for people to make self worth.

The fact is most people these days don't even know what honor is. Its not being petty, jealous, and vindictive. It most certainly isn't having a haughty attitude about ones status, tact, and the way they compose themselves over others. Honor, and humility actually go hand in hand.
