Basic Wiccan Symbols.
Firstly we shall start with a well known symbol commonly linked to magick and the occult. Though primarily used and recognized as a pagan symbol, the symbol in Wiccan terms represent the four elements with the addition of Spirit as the uppermost point. As a representation of the elements, the pentagram is involved in the Wiccan practice of summoning the elemental spirits of the four directions at the beginning of a ritual. The outer circle of the circumscribed pentagram is sometimes interpreted as binding the elements together or bringing them into harmony with each other.
See pentagram below.
the “Triple Goddess” symbol.
This symbol represents three separate female figures, The maiden, the mother and the crone. each of which symbolises both a separate stage in the female life cycle and a phase of the moon. The oppose symbol to this is that of the “horned god”
In depth the Maiden represents enchantment, inception, expansion, the promise of new beginnings, birth, youth and youthful enthusiasm, represented by the waxing moon.
The Mother represents ripeness, fertility, sexuality, fulfilment, stability, power and life represented by the full moon.
The Crone represents wisdom, repose, death, and endings represented by the waning moon.
The “Horned God”
This symbol represents the male part of the religion's duotheistic theological system. It is both equal and opposite to the Goddess. The Wiccan god himself can be represented in many forms, including as the Sun god, the Sacrificed god and the Vegetation god. For Wiccans, the Horned God is "the personification of the life force energy in animals and the wild" [4] and is associated with the wilderness, virility and the hunt
The “Triquetra”
This symbol can represent the “Mind, Body and Soul” but also the “Land, Sea and Sky” Many see it as a symbol of protection or to show how the forces mentioned above “work as one” See for yourself:
The “Ankh”
Many of you may already know what this symbol represents. It is the Egyptian symbol for “Everlasting life” Though many feel it can also represent strength and good health. It seems no one can trace the origin of the symbol, aside from that, its meaning is widely known.
All the symbols mentioned above have been stolen and used by many other religions. Not one these symbols is true wiccan but has been adopted for a useful purpose. Symbols the first form of written language used thousands of years ago, and so they still serve the population today.
There are many more "Wiccan" symbols out there but i feel that these are the fundimentals to which we base our beleifs. I encourage anyone who is new to the practice to read up on each and become familier with using them.
Though this article maybe short and slightly inaccurate, if you enjoyed it please place me on your favourites and comment.
Blessed be.
