The first thing I want to cover, is that these are coming from my knowledge and what I know of my craft. Any input would be appreciated.



The first shield that I was taught was a basic white light, an aura that surrounds the person. However strong it is depends on the energy put into it and is easy enough for the newest practitioner to handle.



From my perspective, to cast, you envision the light filling you. Your own energy pushing it to every inch of your body and let it flow through you and your mind. Then you visualize it flowing outward and creating a bubble like shield around you, protecting you from negativity and harm.



Obviously with time this shield would drain a person, as such I really only use it when I feel the need to as I have other barriers in place to protect me. However during basic spell casting it is ideal as it does not take much energy or focus once the shield is in place.
