She danced on the pictures he broke
Bloodied feet on what might have been
He danced around venom he spoke
Skirting the messy in between
She fidgets, covers nerves stricken
Before all the swelling can bruise
He storms out in a righteous blaze
Though it’s he that lit his own fuse
She can’t smell the thick, toxic gas
Or remember who struck the match
He kicks the door with raging force
When he could have just turned the latch
She squints in the light invading
Outside, as polluted as in
His eyes are blind in smogy haze
And his lids feel heavy, but thin
She sinks to the floor below her
Dirty and thick with littered life
He sinks a flask of amnesia
His mind walks the edge of a knife
She cries until dry, and silent
Until a friend carries her home
He denies with all that’s left in him
Because now he’s truly alone
She leaves because there’s no option
Before losing her mind and nerve
He leaves because it’s more effort
To keep what he doesn’t deserve
“Delicious...”, I thought, at the sound of his voice
These audible, shapely, supple fruits
Impressive the source, the handsome tree
Such a yield only comes from deep roots
“Surprising!”, I thought, with widened eyes
The moment of give to my teeth
Sweet and wet, so much juice rolling down
From its flesh, to my flesh far beneath
Unexpected pleasure from small words
Like a tartness on tongues is complex
Such a rarely visiting flavor
Leaves me hungry for what might come next
No one escapes the dark, my friend
No one escapes the searching dark
The sun sets eventually
The candles extinguish their spark
It may creep in like a phantom
Through cracks in doors, window casing
Stealthy, 'til it's suddenly there
As its thick void you are facing
No one escapes the dark, my friend
No one escapes Earth and Axis
The moon always conquers the sun
Not to light, to highlight its absence
It may fall like weighted curtains
Harsh and sudden in its nature
Ears hearing the loudest silence
And eyes defeated in failure
No one escapes the dark, my friend
No one escapes fully unscathed
The dark we fear most lies within
Some gradual, some born enslaved
Like ravens wings beating our hearts
Like night fog obscuring our view
Invading, dominant presence
Invading the brightest of rooms
No one escapes the dark, my friend
No one escapes very long
Journeying until it finds you
If by word, by deed, or by song
There is no defense, I tell you
It's cold will come bearing its mark
But rest knowing you're never alone
Because no one escapes from the dark
