Stereotyping - Part II00:10 Apr 14 2011
Times Read: 693
As long as I continue to view kismets, Journals, profiles, etc. that blatantly foster stereotypical attitudes about people you don't even know, then I will write about it.
Stereotyping, whether it be about religion, race, gender, sexuality, or social group (this includes Juggalos, Emos, Goths, Skaters, Bikers, Metal Heads, etc.) stops us from learning real facts about people.
For instance, I have Cherokee background. My grandparents lived in Stone Mountain, Georgia along side the 'trail of tears'. But I do not wear feathers in my hair, live in a tipi, or do rain dances by a fire. The culture is dying and the media chooses to speak about us in the past tense as if we do not exist anymore. Also, just because I am Cherokee doesn't mean that the Sioux is just like us. We are all different in our beliefs.
Stereotyping does not allow for individual differences because it condenses a group of people together. It also allows for discrimination and people to commit various atrocities against all kinds of people.
Stereotyping allows for laws to be passed that are damaging to all kinds of groups of people and prevents us from learning real facts about real people. It clumps people into groups and throws out individuality.
What we should be concentrating on is actually getting to know one another as individuals and practicing a little bit of respect for one another rather than stereotyping each other and using that to justify our actions of discrimination.
THIS IS A ZERO TOLERANCE FOR DISCRIMINATION AREA. KEEP YOUR HATRED AT THE DOOR PLEASE!!

This is human nature...we all are gulty of it, but no body is perfect. To change ones opinion they must first live your life for one day and see what it is like to discriminated against. But no one would ever do this, so the cycle continues, and such is life.

I believe I made an attempt to communicate with a young man today. I was nonjudgemental and asked questions about his choice and his makeup; whether or not he does drugs and he answered most of my questions. The one about drugs he answered a little defensively but through out the discussion he was yelling at his mother and the anons in his chat seemed to think I was being judgemental.
I wasn't though. What was I doing wrong?

I can name a few 'high ranking' members who discriminate me because of my religion ...
They openly say stuff in their kismets and nobody has a thing ...

that is very true Sis...i fit alot of things people discriminate against...i have an overweight woman, i am bisexual, i am goth, and i'm pagan, i also have Cherokee blood as well....i see the kismets and i think...really...do you even understand my beliefs or the person that i am...no..they follow a crowd and decide to hate on one of us...people need to take a step back and look at the things they do that could be discriminated against...are you a vegetarian, overweight, do you wear glasses, are you short, or to tall...no people have to jump on a bandwagon and agree with everyone else..people on here talk about sheep...maybe they need to look in the mirror cuz they aint pulling the wool over my eyes...i think my rant is done

I know this is totally off-topic, but wanted to put in this comment as well, since it was a part of what Venus was saying. She brought up her Native American background. I also have Blackfoot in my blood. My great grandmother was full blooded Blackfoot. I find it rather sad how we are all losing not only our culture, but our history, and not just the Native American history, but it also seems anyone with any kind of historical value in their ancestry. For example, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, etc. It is like today's society has forgotten what happened and what made us what we all are.
Now, as for the topic - as much as I disagree with the Juggalo/lette way of clown face painting and everything like that, I do not dislike them as people. I agree with what Venus is trying to make a point about stereotyping. None of us like it when someone tries to pigeonhole us into any category, so why do it to someone else? I am going to use a phrase one of my best friends (who happens to be black) says all the time when she sees people trying to stereotype her. She says " They are trying to make me into a nigger for being black - no matter that that word just means someone is ignorant and you don't even have to be black to be ignorant."
She is correct. Just because someone is different doesn't mean they don't bleed the same or might even have some of the same likes and dislikes you have. Thanks for this post Venus.

I don't think I could have said any better myself Gwen, as much as we are a self destructive race a little bit if tolerance goes a long way. I am both German and Irish, my lineage has had me called a drunk and a hate-monger. Those who know me can easily tell neither is true. Be proud of what you are, fuck what everyone else says- after all, do we not all bleed the same color?
