BEFORE you start calling your corners.... you want to consecrate the inside of the circle where you stand with salt water....
put some clean water in a chalice or cauldron with a handful of salt then dip your fingertip in and swirl it to the right three times and say:
"i move with earth and it moves with me....and to the earth i consecrate thee"
Take a small sip and then scatter the rest of the salt water around your circle clockwise.
NOW, if you want to use your athame INSTEAD of your fingertip you can....but i prefer the fingertip because it connects you to the element that you're pouring into the earth.
Once you've sprinkled the salt water, set down your chalice or cauldron and take up your athame.
As a Celt witch i take the clean athame and cross my left palm to draw a little blood....you can kiss the blade instead, that's fine.... as long as your essence is on it
Thrust the athame towards the sky and say: "As it is above...."
thrust the athame into the ground with in the circle so that it's before you as you work and say: "So it is below!"
Essentially you're not only cleansing your space but since you've sipped off the water and kissed or laid your blood to the athame which is thrust into the ground ( this also represents female/male interaction AND the horned god and Goddess)
you're becoming part of the earth......hence grounding into it.
After this, kneel before the athame in the ground and concentrate on the hilt you're going to imagine your essence traveling into the hilt, through the dagger, into the ground and back up into your own body.....full circle...
Imagine that you've traveled through and back up into your feet....
call yourself up from the ground
"i am part of the earth and earth is part of me.." keep repeating that. I work barefoot so that i can feel it beneath me...
once you feel rooted or grounded, call your corners......
