I completely and utterly believe in the soul's ability to reincarnate itself.
Reincarnation is one of the few factors that tie many of the different religions together. They don't all believe that a soul will necessarily move on to inhabit another body, some believe that they have the ability to transcend human form and move on to be reborn into an animal or some other living force and organism. Life comes in many forms.... we humans are just the only ones vain enough to think that we're the only ones that matter. All energy in life is necessary and essential and all life gives back to it's environment. (Except for human beings who just make a lot of noise, waste water and leave their beer bottles & blunts in the park for some other 'lesser' of the specie to come clean up for 5 bucks an hour. )
My personal belief has always been that Reincarnation is our soul's way of evolving until we get to our highest form. Think of lives as rungs on a tall ladder. Each rung represents a life in which you need to learn a particular lesson. On the first wrung you may need to experience and learn Love, on the next Patience, on another Grief, on another Hatred.... etc, etc. Up and up we rise until we have reached that highest platform. The top could be Heaven or Paradise or Nirvana ... some place where all souls are finally equal and in complete harmony & understanding with each other. The place where souls and energies are beyond human thinking.... beyond fighting over who's God is real and tangible. Beyond all truth.
I think that to become what we set out to be in life... we need to learn these lessons. Some religions believe that you just die and that's it...... you get to go to Heaven. You get a free ticket in ( as long as you haven't committed one of the 'greater' sins...) whether you've lived and learned or not. That would mean that a child who is stillborn and never got the opportunity to experience life would be on the same level as a someone who died at 100 years old and experienced a lifetime. I just don't believe this can be. We need to experience and learn.... Everything. And how can you be expected to do that in a single lifetime? I just don't think you can. I know that i can't. I have a long way to go.... i'm still learning.

Love,Patience, grief, hatred,Ive experienced them all in this lifetime, but i dont know what is new to me.Id like to think that when we learn one of these experiences that it carries over into our next life so each life is an improvement.this will explain why some people seem to have it all going for them and others live their lives focused on one small thing.
Ive had a couple of very vivid death dreams in my life, and they each seemed to me more of a memory than a dream.I like to think that each one of these has been a glimpse into one of my past lives-the moment when I moved from one rung onto the next.

Does reincarnation produce 'old souls'? That term always confused me.

Science supports (in a way) reincarnation (of matter). For example any particle in the cosmos can become infused with another particle.
