Vampire Story - Part I

A fragrance enters my attention. I pause, mid-sentence, closing my eyes slowly as if not to disturb this new entity with quick movements. My head tilts automatically to aid in searching the archives of my memory for something to help identify the intoxicating aroma. And while my conversation quests stare at me in fascinated confusion, it registers. A pheromone buried in my past, one that had nearly got me killed. “It’s her, but how?”

A rush of memories floods my mind’s eye, and before I realize it, my body is moving, tracking the scent to its origin. Obsession takes hold. I need answers. “Is it really her? She couldn’t have survived.” Or could this be a complex trick to lure me out in the open with obscured senses? Whoever it is, I hope they’ve made peace with their maker!

Speeding across the city’s edge, shooting from shadow to shadow in a blur. I pause at the last building, studying the forest line ahead. The scent is strong now, she must be close. Strange, I don’t sense any Lycans meandering about the forest. I’m grateful, but wary. Silence. Something is wrong. I begin to move away from the building, cautiously, and head for the forest’s edge. Suddenly, my senses indicate rapid movement from behind. Whirling around, I deflect a stake into the ground at the last second. My eyes retrace its path back up to the rooftop. A small group of vampires stare back at me. And there she was; her arms folded in contempt, with a crossbow dangling from her right hand. “Kira… nice to see you too.”

“Take him out.” Her voice was cold and confident. In a flash of glimmering moon light, two of the vampires leap from the rooftop wielding swords. The other vampires unload their crossbows a moment later. The first bolt rushed past my left ear. Dodging several more, I slowly move forward, waiting for the right opportunity. The two swordsmen, after landing into a full sprint, are closing in, and preparing to strike. “Now”, I think to myself, and I deflect the next bolt directly into the closest vampire’s face with a hollow, but loud, thud. A split second later, I deflect the last bolt into the other vampire’s foot, which, due to his incredible momentum, catapults the rest of his body forward and onto his sword. I fold my arms in exaggerated patience as their bodies twitch at my feet. The remaining crew stare motionlessly from the rooftop with no change in their expressions, but the pungent pheromones of their mounting fear is unmistakable.

With the slightest of hand gestures, Kira instructed the remaining clan to end this fight. Three vampires dive from the building’s edge in perfect unison. I sigh in annoyance and mumble “Enough of these delays.” I need to talk to Kira and find out what happened!

No, more play-time. In the blink of an eye, I sprint to the base of the building and climb halfway up the wall. Pushing off with my left foot I launch into the middle vampire who was still in mid-dive, and hadn’t even blinked yet. With momentum and strength on my side, I punched through his chest, ripping out his heart with ease. The other vampires, upon landing, nearly fall over from a physical jolt of surprise. They did not expect to see me standing so close to them and with the blood of their brethren on my hands. But before they could adjust their shock into rage, and in turn, action, their consciousness was ended abruptly. Flicking the gore from my hands, I watch the two bodies crumple to the ground on top of each other. Their smashed heads, now fused together, land in a heap of grotesque salsa, but only for a moment as they ignite and disintegrate. Looking up at the lone figure on the roof, I flash her a look that said “your move, honey.”

Blurred action and a slight breeze upon my face announce Kira’s arrival from the rooftop. Just the two of us, we stand inches apart in momentary silence. My nerves are on edge, ready to defend against the inevitable attack. But she is faster than I remembered…

Before I could react, Kira grasps my head with both hands and pulls me in for a fierce kiss. It was a ninety-year embrace; a release of pent up anger and passion. I was stunned. I didn’t know what to expect, but I certainly didn’t anticipate that reaction. She slowly relaxed and looked deep into my eyes. A single tear of blood fell from her cheek. “God, I hate you” she said and failed to restrain a smirk. Kira slapped my face playfully as she turned away. “Come on” she demanded while tugging on my forearm.

“Wh… What?” I stammered in surprise. “I have a ton of questions for you, like why aren’t you pissed that I just killed off your clan?” Kira looked back at me with a sense of urgency. “Those punks annoyed me, I intentionally sent them to their deaths... knew you’d win. Now, come on! No time for questions, we gotta leave before the Lycans realized what happened!”
