A friend on whom thou might depend
Is treasure beyond any gold
With whom'st thou might reach any end
And speak thy mind, regardless of how bold
A courteous mode so common has grown
That seldom true friends can be made
They're flighty all, be'est woman or man
When they've no use for you they'll fade
I'll trust my heart, I have had true friends
Though finding true from false oft left me bruised
I speak my mind, to me their ear they lend
Against me seldom was that trust ill-used
And so in southern parts where friendship's cheap
Far safer to not speak your mind at all
Or sowing truth misfortune you shall reap
Here honesty can be a man's downfall
