I recently started reading "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis, one of the books I kept after dropping my Philosophy of Religion course this quarter. The surprising part is, it's actually making me seriously rethink my religious beliefs.

Lewis is a former atheist who converted to Christianity.

So far, he has made some very valid points arguing for the existence of a supreme being.

The point I'm running through my grey matter quite a bit is the foundation of his argument, that of an inherent sense of right and wrong. I can't quite decide for sure if this is correct or not. It seems likely, as the most basic moral codes are pretty universal.

Do we not inherently know that stealing is wrong? Perhaps many are able to easily justify theft, but that it requires justification points to the knowledge that it's wrong.

This is what Lewis calls the Law of Human Nature.

Other things that we consider natural laws are not so, such as gravity. Gravity is not a law, we don't have a choice between obeying gravity or not. Gravity just is.

The Law of Human Nature, if it exists, is not only a law that we have the choice of obeying or not, but one that none of us obey absolutely. We are human, we are not perfect, we make mistakes. This isn't far removed from the Judeo-Christian concept of Original Sin.

So, what it all comes down to, that I'm still struggling with, is the idea that our conscience, the Law of Human Nature, basic morality, the concept of Right and Wrong..... is this learned, genetic, or is it the Divine Spark of a Supreme Being?

If one of the first two is the case, how can it be proven? Obviously, if the third is true, there is no way it can be proven.

I think I'm going to have to formulate this into a forum topic.
