Watching it, she had recollected the first and the last time she had seen the sunrise. It was when she was 8 years old when her grandpa Frank had taken her out to the pond for fishing before he up and got sick and died.
They had a public dock out there in Lainchek, Utah. He and Caitlyn loved to go fishing out in the afternoons but she never caught a fish. That’s how it went for her; she would get the nibbles, he would get the fish. The first time he took her to the docks was when she saw her first sunrise and it was beautiful. Like colors in a portrait that blended so graceful, no word could be found but one could describe it and it was, “Wow.”
Turning on her tuck lights, Caitlyn grabs the map wondering how far she had left to go. Heading back home to Lainchek, Utah from California, Springs seemed to be the right thing to do. Now, she just wanted to head back and forget she ever tried to have a get-a-away. “I should almost be there.”
She said aloud as she set down the map before starting the truck. Looking down the road, she started to drive and opened the glove compartment revealing a gun. Looking at it for a moment, she folds up the map and shoves it in before closing it. After driving for hours, the sun lighting the sky, she sees a gas station and drives in to fill up the gas tank. Parking her truck, she fills up her truck and walks in the station looking at cigarettes and coffee.
“Umm… two number ones please and dark coffee. I also have 20 in gas.” Watching the woman pop bubble gum with her mouth, as she rings it up and says, “That’ll be 23.04, please.” Pulling out her wallet, she gives the woman the money then watches the woman in her thirties get her, her coffee and cigarettes. “Thank you. Oh and am I heading the right way for Lainchek, Utah?”
It may have not been the right person to ask but she had to. She wasn’t really sure if she was heading off route or on route. “Just keep going on highway 185 then turn on 45. You’ll be there by night fall.” “Nightfall? Great.”
She said sarcastically as she grabbed her stuff heading to her truck and sips her coffee almost burning her tongue. “I think I need a new map…” Sitting in her truck, she pulls out a cigarette then pulls out her lighter flipping it open and lighting it. Taking a drag, she sighs and starts the truck driving once again following highway 185.
The last time she had been in a car ride this long was when she was moving away from home. It’s kind of funny. How things seem to bring you back to a place where you thought you’d never be again. Drinking her coffee once it had cooled down a bit she thought, I wonder if it has changed at all.
As nighttime fell once again, she said out loud, “Okay. I have followed the damn instructions and I am still not there.” Caitlyn looked at the road up ahead for signs as she drove, her finger tapping the wheel impatiently while it held another cigarette. Huh, she thought seeing a sign that said, “Welcome to Lainchek.” “Ugh!! Thank god!”
Remarking that, she sighs and took the last drag before putting it out. Looking around, she only saw trees then a car parked alongside the road and noticed the door was wide open. Feeling something was wrong, she pulls up in front of it and looks behind her, yelling out, “Hello?!!” Only silence filled the air making her skin crawl and goose bumps appear.
Opening up the glove box, she pulled out her gun and opened her truck door leaving her truck running so she could have light. “Hello!!” Yelling it once again, she pointed the gun downward to the ground as she walked toward the car. Getting close to the car, she noticed a woman’s purse on the ground and looked toward the forest.
Next time bring a flash light, she thought to herself as her eyes scanned into the darkness.
A horn honked and lights cruised by a truck parked along side of the road. Caitlyn Sherwood crude awaking caused her to sit up and hit her head on the dash of her truck. “Fuck!” Putting her hand on her head, she sighs taking calming breathes to slow her pulsing heart caused by two things.
One was the vehicle that had passed by, the other was the nightmare she was having. Something or someone was watching her through her window, and somehow gotten in. It grabbed her, dragging her to the building where her FBI career took a downfall. She would relive that whole day of how an innocent little girl died in a huge drug heist and somehow, someway her cover was blown causing herself to get shot; twice.
The first bullet went into Caitlyn’s chest; able to endure the pain, she shot two men in the legs. What she didn’t count on was that they would shoot the little girl they used in loading the drugs. She moved to protect her but it was too late and the bullet went through the little girls neck killing her instantly. Then lodged into Caitlyn’s stomach; it took an hour and a half to get the bullets out but thankfully nothing was damaged.
Unfortunately, it gave her nightmares and lack of sleep, making her partner become worried and so did the other FBI agents. Plus, she was now under investigation by the Internal Affairs for the blown cover and other accusations. She had to go on ‘ leave vacation’, which turned into retirement after a month. Her head was reeling from what was happening, so, she decided just to leave California and have a get-a-away if possible.
She scratches her head; normally she could sleep through anything but since she was in her uncomfortable truck, just the sound of birds or wind would awaken her. Glancing out the window, her eyes had taken notice of the sunrise.
