And now a message from our sponsors...
You know, there's such thing as tact.
Do YOU have it?
In recent surveys, 38% of respondents didn't know that writing an email in ALLCAPS was considered poor etiquette, and 70% were unaware that they were hitting Reply All on emails. 64% said that they preferred to lash out at employees via mass emails, rather than confront people with a minor suggestion.
These people are usually called 'managers'.
Hello. I'm ThothLestat, and I work in a real office, in a real company, in a real building located in a large metropolitan city. Here at Thoth Labs, our top scientists have made some amazing break-throughs in Tact, Discretion, and Courtesy.
But it's been difficult to get the word out, what with Charlie Sheen, Egypt, Libya, and gas prices hogging the spotlight lately.
But, for argument's sake, let's say you're at work and you want to remind your co-workers to use the correct codes on their weekly time-sheets.
To make things simple, I will reduce your options to just two. Which tactic will you use? Please choose one.
A. You find the person who has been using the incorrect 4-digit code on their time-sheet, pull them aside and have a friendly chat reminding them to use the proper code in the future.
B. You send a mass email to everyone -- at 6pm at night -- in ALLCAPS that says simply, DO NOT USE XXXX ON YOUR TIME-SHEETS. EVER. PLEASE USE XXXX. Questions? SEE ME
What is your answer?
If you chose B, you're a jackass. You lack tact.
But the good news is, you have MANAGEMENT potential!
Go get 'em, tiger!

heh. Brilliantly put Mr Thoth. Netiquette maketh the man.
Take away all my sadness, fill my life with gladness
Ease my troubles, that's what you do
Have I told you lately?
oh, this is beyond netiquette. This is just basic interpersonal communication. The guy works down the hall from us, but rather than have a discussion he blasted a mass email from his effin' BlackBerry.
That's just shitty management.
*giggles*
This came at a perfect time for me. Amen.
That is just sad.
I have worked management, I have seen other managers do this themselves and it annoyed me to no end.
People need a class on this if they become a manager. Seriously, it should be mandatory.
THERE IS A FUNNY SIDE WITH B THOUGH ISN'T THERE THOTH?
...Ooo that just looks odd in Caps lol
Ah, yes... well, a couple of footnotes...
1. A BlackBerry is a phone. Therefore common, proper typing is not necessary. All caps and shorthand should be acceptable, even in business level communication.
2. Managers have too much to do and too many people to manage to worry about such things as tact and personal etiquitte. An email blast to everyone regarding one person's issue is more efficient. Now no one will use the wrong code, ever.
3. Most managers have learned that pulling someone aside to correct their actions doesn't have any positive affect on 85% of their workforce. Why waste time? Just send an email, or in the old days, a memo.
Now is this getting less murky?
*squints eyes*
oh, Birra, that is not the right answer, though I'm absolutely positive that you're a better manager than the ass clown down the hall from me.
Wow lol...

Yeah they do look like new shoes Thoth, did you buy them just for this shot?
Is your desk a mess just so that you look busy and what's with the turn ups?

Aw, you noticed!
*blush*
Yep, all that crap on my desk is just for looks. I'm not busy at all -- I nearly fell asleep at my desk twice yesterday -- but my office looks like it's cluttered with lots of important stuff that I'm working on. It's awesome. And it's all fake.
I feel like I'm on the set of a Hollywood movie.
And yes, my shoes are kinda shiny. I'll be honest. I don't really know what's in style these days with regards to shoes and neckties. I might be trapped in 2003-ish fashion. Are shiny shoes out of style?
Could be... I'm afraid to ask. If I am hopelessly out of fashion, why won't people tell me?
