The new girl is sitting in an empty office down the hall, sobbing quietly to herself. I don't think she knows that I can hear her. Her sobbing and sniffling cuts through the paper-thin walls, and bounces off the ceiling tiles. The more I try to ignore it, the harder it becomes.
I don't know why she is crying and I don't really want to know. I wonder how long this needs to go on before someone goes in there to comfort her.
I don't want to be the one who does it. You see, dear reader, I never know what to do when someone is crying. Tell a joke? Bring them some water? I know: magic tricks!
That's probably not the right answer. I think I lack a certain part of my brain that accurately replicates emotions like empathy and what most people call "caring" in these situations. Oh sure, I can go through the motions:
Sympathy Mode: ENABLED.
*pat pat pat*
THERE. THERE.
*pat pat pat*
THERE. THERE. DO YOU REQUIRE A TISSUE?
Sympathy Mode: DISABLED
More importantly; if I wait in my office long enough, someone else will go in there and ask her what's wrong. And I know that whoever does that for her is a better person than I. So be it.
I'll just turn up my Ipod and act like I didn't notice.
Actually, the sobbing is kind of turning me on.
*wink*

All you have to do is go in there and let her cry. You don't need to do anything but listen. You don't have to comfort her or any one in that situation. Just let them cry it out.

Yep. I'll write about it shortly.
It's one of those cases where I might have been better off minding my own stupid business.
