um....
Apart from my insanely short attention span, I have this terrible habit of counting things that I see or hear; cracks in the sidewalk, honking horns, floor tiles, stop lights, birds on a fence, steps to the bathroom -- incidentally; there are 88 steps to the bathroom (for example).
I mention this because I also take little notes during meetings. But usually, I'm not taking notes of the speaker's content. I'm usually keeping track of how many times a speaker says "um" or "uh" or "ahem".
I know, it's petty. I know it.
You don't have to tell me.
One of my co-workers is an especially untalented public speaker. It's dreadful, really. And I know it's awful of me to keep track of these things, but I can't stop.
She gave a 30 minute presentation recently which contained:
27 "um"s
11 "or something"s
9 "ya know"s
5 "pretty much....uh..."s
3 "basically"s
3 "what we did was..."
That's a lot of superfluous syllables from someone who is generally considered to be an expert at what she does.
It drove me insane listening to this. And I'm pretty sure it drove the client insane. It doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Wishy-washy discomfort is contagious. I think EVERYONE in the room could sense it. Now we're all going to draw straws to see who has to tell her to practice next time.
And I pray it isn't me.
At any rate, have a wonderful weekend!
Cheers!

(a discarded rant about my co-worker).....
Wow, you really are the dumbest person ever. EVER.
Would you PLEASE just shut the hell up?
Sometimes, bad things happen to people because they bring it upon themselves.
These are called "consequences".
It isn't someone else's fault, it's not bad luck, it isn't fate, it isn't a conspiracy, and it isn't bad karma.
It's just YOU.
Because you're effin' stupid.

HAHA
I'm so tempted to print this and post it on the bulletin board at work.
Ohhh did you just use the c-word ? lol
oh god.. i feel like that a lot too LOL
I find myself think this a lot too.. weird.
This put a smile on my face and you sound like my wife...
Just remember that some people are only alive because it is illegal to kill them. lol.
What about Gremlins?
I had a consequence once, I feed it, and it became a Problem.
Then one day I was playing with it.. and it bit my friend.. I had to explain how my Problem got that way.. I so wish it had bitten me though..
See, Dab... it only proves my point.
Consequences usually turn into problems, and when it becomes MY problem, then I go all "Stamford Chimp" on them.
it is the way of the Mogwai.

Counting things like that is sometimes a sign of obsessive compulsive disorder.
It's sort of ironic that a symptom of this disorder is noticing the order and structer in things haha.

Oh thank you! I haven't found anything that sparked my interest to count since I moved away from home. Gunshots were my favorite there.. we lack those where I live now.
I'm going to drive my coworkers nuts with this one! I'll break all of their bad habits one way or another. =)

ROFL! I don't think it's petty one bit. Of course, I say this, full well knowing I do the same damn thing. Maybe not with steps or cracks in a sidewalk, but most assuredly if/when anyone talks to me or is telling a story of what happened to him in school today (my kids) lol. Christy has made it well aware that I'm very OCD about my drawing and a few other things here and there. Anysway, no worries, Mate, you're not the only one ;)

Maybe it's a west coast thing but "like" gets me. I wonder how much time she filled with those words alone... *slurp thump, slurp thump, slurp thump*
*Hands over a box of oreos and a huge mug of milk*

Such habits, can make you a lie detector.. I don't think it is petty, petty serves no purpose, your observations could progress her speaking skills. Too many people fear pausing during presentations. A pause, with a controled breath.. better then.. "Ummm .. Err .. like you know.. Whoosh "Are you all still with me?"

You ARE obssessive/compulsive...and I think after having to listen to that particular speaker, I'd be counting the minutes down to where I'd have to excuse myself to keep from strangling her.
