Most of you are going to be like Who? and we don't care so fuck off now if that's one of you.
Many of you may or may not know I do art. I went to college and ever since I was a kid I have loved it. People like Neil Buchanan and Tony Hart. They made art fun for me.
People always ask me who got you into art and who was my personal favourite of them all. I had the pleasure of meeting someone who has been an inspiration too many people including myself. I ad the pleasure of meeting Mark Speight five times in my life.
The first was throught on of my schools when I was about 10. It was the sMart on the road thing. Anyway everyone was asking him questions and such and showing off their stuff. I sat there and listended to his advice on art and made notes. As a 10 year old I made notes. Anyway I never spoke during the session. But I was on my way out to the playground after it and before I left he asked me to just stay behind. He asked me what I was doing during the session and I said I was making notes and he smiled and asked if I found it helpful I said it was and I thanked him for helping me with art and that it was a pleasure to meet him. I told him I didn't ask questions because I didn't want to bother him but he asked to my art and said I should keep up it so I did.
Anyway two years later I was on holiday at a holiday camp and sMart the show he worked for was there again. I went to go and meet him again and he remebered me and asked how I was doing and to see my art. I never believed in myself with art, yet he always had time to tell me how good it was and how I should stick at it. I managed to see him another two times in my life when I was 16 and 18.
The last time I saw him was in November 2007. He was doing something somewhere and I got an email from him to tell me to go and to bring some of my work so I did. We had a good chat and he asked me what I was doing and I mentioned I wanted to do art but was scared to go to college to do it. Anyway for half an hour he sat down with me and encourgaed the idea of going to college doing what I wanted and so the day after I went to get the forms. Without Mark's help in my life I would not have loved art or wanted to do it. I wouldn't have been at college or got my graphics GCSE.
Sadly. In January 2008 I learned of the passing of Mark's fiancee. I left him an email during Febuary and March. But the last time I ever spoke to him or managed to meet him was in 2007.
Mark Speight was discovered dead in April 2008.
Mark was one of the nicest people ever. He always had time for everyone or anyone and would always go the extra mile to help people. He will be sadly missed. I miss him a lot as he always had a grin about him or made you feel good when you were around him. Smart the TV show was always something I tuned into I watched him growing up and I said had the pleasure of meeting him at key points in my life.
