Chapter One

The sun rose casting a warm glow on her room, she opened her eyes and stretched her arms wide. For a minute she hoped it was all just a bad-dream, just like she did every morning. As she caught sight of her arm her hopes were dashed. Adrian had started cutting herself after her mother had died; her dad had turned to alcohol. She knew things at home could’ve been ten times worse; her father could beat her, or something like that. Her home life wasn’t what had made her cut all of those times it was school.

Although Adrian was a pretty girl, with long, straight, black hair, with light blue eyes that held more pain then anyone could ever have known. Body-wise she was normal, she wasn’t fat, or overly skinny or anything like that. All of that seemed to be wasted in her opinion, she was always the one targeted by the athletes for their cruel jokes. The popular girls always thought of her as unworthy of their attention.. She was an outcast, plain and simple. Adrian had long ago accepted that fact. She went to school every day expecting the worse, and often enough her expectations proved to be right.

This year will be different, she told herself, her dad had finally got a new job and they had moved to a new town. This was Adrian’s second chance to have the life she so desperately wanted. She walked into her new bathroom and got ready for her first day at her new school, the first day of her new life.

“Dad? I’m leaving.” She yelled as she went to walk out the door.

“Want me to give you a ride?” He asked

“No, it’s only two blocks away and besides your already running late for work.” She said as he looked at his watch.

“Shit, you’re right. I got to go, I love you have a good day.” He said as he ran out the door before her. Adrian just shook her head, locked the door, and left. As she was walking she pulled her CD player out of her backpack, normally she had it in her pocket, but the pants she had on were to tight to let it fit. She turned it on and Where Can I Stab Myself In The Ears by Hawthorne Heights came on. She sang softly to herself as she walked.

“I guess I could have sent a letter from the road, with words that always meant more than updates on the phone…” she sang, stopping when she bumped into someone, “Oh! I’m sorry.” She said pulling her headphones off.

“It’s alright,” The guy said, “I wasn’t paying attention. By the way my name’s Craig.” He said holding out his hand to her.

“Adrian.” She said taking his hand.

“Nice to meet you. You new around here?” He asked

“Ya just moved in last week.”

“Oh, so you’re my new neighbor.”

“Ya I guess.”

“Well, we better get goin’ or else were going to be late for school.” He said. Adrian thought that he was nice enough; at least it was she had someone to talk to now. Besides, she thought, he isn’t that bad looking.

Craig woke up that morning not really expecting anything out of the usual to happen. He got up, got ready, and ate his breakfast just like he always did. As he walked out the door his mom yelled, “Craig are you coming right home after school?”

“Maybe,” he yelled back, now walking backwards down his driveway, “If I decide to stay after I’ll call you on your cell ok?”

“Ok.” She yelled as she walked back into the house. As he went to turn around he ran into someone walking past his house.

“Oh! I’m sorry,” she said. Pulling her headphones off.

“It’s alright,” He said, “I wasn’t paying attention. By the way my name’s Craig.” He said holding out his hand to her.

“Adrian.” She said taking his hand.

“Nice to meet you. You new around here?” He asked

“Ya just moved in last week.”

“Oh, so you’re my new neighbor.” He said remembering the people who had just moved in next door.

“Ya I guess.”

“Well, we better get goin’ or else were going to be late for school.” He said, he knew it sounded stupid, but he couldn’t think of anything else to say. She’s pretty, he thought, I wonder why she seems so sad. All the while they were walking Craig couldn’t help but wonder if she had a boyfriend back where she used to live. As they walked an awkward silence fell over them.

“So what were you listening to?” He asked to break the silence

“Hawthorne Heights.”

“You like Hawthorne Heights?” He said sounding surprised.

“Ya, why?” She asked cautiously

“I like them to but no one in the school listens to them, I mean no one.” He said emphasizing the second no.

“Ya, it was like that at my old school, too. At least I’m pretty sure it was.” Adrian said stopping to think.

“What do you mean ‘you think’?”

“Well I was kind of an outcast at my old school…”

“Why?” He asked, she could tell he was sincerely interested so she went on.

“Well when my mom died two years ago my dad quit his job and started drinking. I guess when people found out about that they just kind of labeled me the outcast.”

“Wow. I’m sorry…I had no idea…”

“It’s ok. Really.” She said with a little laugh. How can she talk about something that serious and not break down? It was only two years ago, he thought

“It’s ok. Really.” She said with a little laugh. She was just trying to get him to believe it, on the inside she was screaming for help. And maybe, Adrian thought, just maybe I’ve found it. She paused at the schools front door and took a deep breath.

“You comin’ Adrian?” Craig asked

“Ya,” she said quietly, “I’m coming”

Chapter Two

She walked into this new school cautiously afraid, as she always had been at her old school, that something would go wrong. Craig walked with her to the principles office and sat with her while she waited for the principle to get of the phone.

“Adrian Smith.” The principle called. Adrian jumped up ant the sound of her name. “Here’s your class schedule, I’d show you to you classes but I’m to busy. Craig, you show her to her classes.”

“Ok.” He said, “Come on Adrian.”

“Ok.” Adrian replied.
