Since I have been making a few of my sites dedicated to SteamPunk, some of you have asked me to explain what "SteamPunk" is. This is my response, though it is not the opinion of every "steampunk" person, it is my own interpretation. Punk means time, age or era, and so it means an age that had mastered and uses steam as a main source of power. Due to the real age of steam, Victorian and American "western age" clothing styles are mostly the fashion. In the stories of Jules Verne [(1828-1905), noted French scientific author wrote Around the World in Eighty Days (1873), Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea (1869);]

and H.G. Wells[(1866-1946), English author, futurist, essayist, historian, socialist, and teacher wrote The War of the Worlds (1898)and The Time Machine (1895)] there stories took place in the Victorian culture, but there are stories like Philip Pullman's Golden Compass that take place in a modern world on a sister plane of existence that just never developed combustion engines and continued in the steam path. And there are some that are post apocalyptic. In these last 2 types, clothing fashion takes on a well crafted, but non contemporary blending of old and new. Most incorporate trade-mark elements like hats and goggles of some sort. And also note that brass, tan leather, corvettes, clockwork gadgets, and Tesla inspired electrical devices fill the background as well as airships like dirigibles. These are the elements of steam punk that I look for, but the very fact that it is a largely fiction inspired time, it is open for broad interpretation.
