The OpenLearn website gives free access to Open University course materials.
We launched OpenLearn back in October 2006 thanks to a grant from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Our shared vision was free online education, open to anyone, anywhere in the world. OpenLearn is the result and we have since reached over 8 million people.
In the first two years, OpenLearn grew to include over 8000 study hours of learning materials from Open University courses. The website continues to grow with new course materials being published regularly in our LearningSpace.
And that’s not all. In 2010 we merged OpenLearn with open2.net, The Open University website that has supported our BBC broadcasts since 1999. So now OpenLearn gives access to topical and interactive content, from expert blogs, to videos and games. This ‘open media’ often links to our BBC television and radio programmes. As if that isn’t enough, you can also find Open University channels on YouTube and iTunesU and you can follow us on Twitter.

OpenLearn published a Research Report documenting the story of our first two years of running the website. The Open University are now leaders in the research of Open Educational Resources, collaborating with Carnegie Mellon University to form OLnet. We also run a Support Centre for Open Educational Resources (SCORE), working with other universities in the UK to develop more free learning materials.

I meet some pretty cool people through the morning at work. Some of them struggle to follow rules so it makes my day when one of them tells me they did the right thing.

When I was little, I always knew where I would be in the year 2010. For some reason, I imagined that was the year that I would be fully self-actualised.
...and in 2011, I am where I thought I would be in terms of experiences, happiness, and opportunities. That's pretty cool. I guess that somehow, I engineered situations and made things happen for myself along the way because I've always known that life does not just hand you what you want, it has to be worked for.
What struck me today was, that beyond 2010, I had no expectations for myself at all. I simply did not think that far ahead. I'm not in the least superstitious so it was never because I saw nothing beyond that point for me.
When I had that thought today, I realised that I am obviously still travelling on my path. I am delighted that there is much more yet to come my way.

I have the kind of job that requires me to be alert, focused and observant. I love it. I love the challenge.
I like being busy and hate the days when there is less to do. I also hate one of my bosses, her attitude sucks and she isn't a very nice person at all...
Today was a crap morning at work. I wanted to shoot myself, I needed putting out of my misery because I had to work with my boss and she spent the entire morning floating round the office, gossiping about folk I work with. Chatting incessantly, being unprofessional...I had more than enough and I asked her politely to stop distracting me...
...she whirled round at that, went over on her ankle...lost balance and toppled to the floor...
Do you have any idea how difficult it was for me to feign sympathy and rush to her aid...?
