For a fleeting second I saw a pair of glowing green eyes in the distance.
“Open fire!” I shouted and begin firing blindly into the darkness.
‘Fire and move, fire and move’ I repeated my training over in my head. After firing a short burst into the area I was a muzzle flash I moved two paces in a random direction. All around me there was screams from the injured cultist, some where to my left a grenade went off illuminating the whole quad.
Out of the corner of my eye I say a blur of movement and twisted my body to bring my weapon to bare.
But I was too slow and the devil slammed into me, sending me skidding across the grass.
I went for my rifle but the Devil pinned me to the ground.
“Now you die,” it hissed, its tail lashed out and drove itself into my shoulder. Then the devil ripped it out and stabbed it into my gut.
I screamed as the intense pain spread over me, like white-hot pokers being rubbed on the same spot. My breath came out in short fast gasps. I could feel my warm blood slowly cover my abdomen and chest as it spurted out from both wounds.
The devil grabbed me by the front of my shirt and pulled my chest up a little.
But as it did the cross that had been hidden in my pocket fell out onto my hands as I tried pulling out the Devil tail.
Light erupted from the holy object.
The Devil jumped back (ripping its tale from me in the process) and hissed.
Without the Devil holding me up I fell back and smacked my head into a small stone.
The devil hissed in rage and kicked me with one of it hooves in the chest.
I felt more that heard the ribs brake, four of them and cried out in pain once more.
But the devil had done what it wanted to do; in kicking me it had knocked the cross that had been keeping it at bay some distance away.
The light sudden vanished and once more the green glowing eyes looked down at me.
But then the clouds parted and silvery, cold moonlight cast down on the quad.
The Devil raised its clawed arm and prepared to deliver the deathblow.
Then started jerking backwards as if being electrocuted.
And then I saw why, off to my left Matt came running forwards firing the hefty machine gun he was carrying.
The Devil screeched then fell backwards and bust into flames and lay very still.
Black spots suddenly begin to fill my vision and I felt overwhelmed with exhaustion. Even to breath was becoming an effort.
Just before the darkness swallowed me heard Matt kneel by my side and say, “hold on dude, helps on the way, hold on”
I woke up in hospital. I knew it was a hospital from one observation, the smell. All hospitals smell the same. They smell of disinfectants.
I sat up and in doing so was rewarded in spikes of pain in both my chest and abdomen.
I looked down to find I was wearing a pair of thin cotton trousers bottoms.
My whole chest was banged, while so were both my left and right hand.
I gave my head a few moments to lose the grogginess then looked to my left to where a bedside cabinet sat.
I pulled open on of the draws and looked inside. There folded perfectly was my suit from the night of the dance and on top of those was my wallet and mobile.
I pulled open the mobile and switched it on. The clock on the screen said Tuesday eleven pm. I had been out cold for almost three days.
I scrolled down the names in the phone till I came to the one I wanted and then pressed dial.
“Hello” Martin said on the other end of the line.
“Get me out of here” I said and realized how dry my throat was.
“Hold tight” he replied.
Roughly ten minuets later the door opened and in walked three people.
“As you can see nurse Mr Blake is awake now” said a woman in white coat, it took me a moment to relies it was Kat, next to her in an identical coat stood Matt.
“Now if you don’t mind we need to get him to x ray to make sure he has no internal injuries” Matt grunted in his best American accent to the nurse (who looked like she did want to say something but thought better of it than argue with two doctors, the poor woman)
Kat went about gathering my things while Matt unhooked me from the many different machines I was plugged into. Then picked me up and placed me into a wheelchair the nurse had brought in.
“And his charts please” Kat said to the nurse, who handed them over.
And without another word we walked away. Only when we were safely in an empty elevator did they drop the act of pretending to be doctors.
“Here put that on” Kat said kindly and handed me a long leather coat she had produced from under her shirt.
I stood up and leaned on Matt while slipping it on.
“I though you looked a bit bigger than normal” I rasped.
“I’ll take it back if you’re not happy” Kat threatened.
I shock my head then leaned against the wall as she and Matt took off their white doctor coats.
We walked out the hospital with out any problems. Matt led me over to a car parked by the entrance. I opened the door to find Martin sat in the driving seat.
With some assistance I was strapped in and Martin started off.
I groaned as he went over a speed bump, “sorry man” he said
“You’re a luck git you know that. You nearly die of blood lose” he went on to say.
“Did we get them all?” I asked
“Yer we got them all” he replied.
“Was anyone apart from me hurt?” I asked.
“Not really, I had a bullet take a chuck out of my butt, but that’s all” was his reply.
I looked over at him and saw how he squirmed in his seat every now and again.
“Does it hurt?” I asked.
“Just stings a bit” came the reply through gritted teeth.
We spent the next two days in our motel room. It was the day before our flight home when Natasha came to me and handed me a slip of paper.
“What’s this?” I asked
“Jennifer asked me to give it to you” she replied.
I smiled “thank you”
When she had gone I opened it up. On it was a mobiles number and ‘pleases call’ written in neat handwriting, it was signed Jennifer.
At one pm that day I sat in the coffee shop Henry had shown us. A half drunk cup of coffee sitting in front of me. I put the cigarette out in the ashtray next to me and waited. I waited because I promised an explanation to someone, and I am a man of honor.
“Hi” said a voice.
I looked up and saw Jennifer standing in front of me, two bodyguards standing next to her.
“Hay” I said, “sit down please” and swept a hand at the empty seats.
Before she could one of the bodyguard stepped forwards and reached for the inside of my leather coat.
I grabbed his hand and twisted it into a wristlock “what you think your doing lad” I asked and he grunted in pain.
“Making sure your not armed” the other said and reached for his own shoulder holster.
I let go of the bodyguard then pulled out my agent badge and threw it to them. They looked at it quickly then tossed it back to me.
“Do you want to explain what happened?” Jennifer asked as she threw dark looks at her guards then sat down opposite me.
“Can we talk in privet?” I asked
“Ms Cambell doesn’t go anywhere without us” One of the guards replied.
“Then back up a bit” Jennifer snapped.
To my surprise they did. I pulled out another cigarette from the packet on the table and lit one up. “Well I take it you remember everything that happened at the dance” I sad
Jennifer nodded.
“Well my name, my real name if Jack Ravencroft and I’m a agent for the British and American government. Its my job to hunt down and destroy entity’s called Devils”.
“Like the thing Harlin turned into?” Jennifer asked
I nodded “yer, me and my team have been hunting them for about a year now”.
“We were sent here under orders to find the Devil that had been coursing the disappearances of a small number of students and eliminate it, but the day we arrived your father received a letter saying if he did not step down as president then the writers of the letter would come after you. The person who wrote the letter turned out to be Harlin (which was true, after comparing the letter to some pieces of paper found in her desk it became clear who had sent it. And that she had had one of her cultist who worked in the white house to plant it).
“So you were just getting close to me so you could keep an eye on me?” she asked
I shock my head “no, I like you, I really do, if anything I’m fallen in love with you”.
“And I you” she said and with that she leaned over the table and kissed me.
We let the kiss linger a moment longer then broke it.
“I’m leaving for England tomorrow” I said
“You’ll keep in contact though won’t you?” Jennifer asked and gently took my badgered hands.
I smiled and raised her hand and kissed them lightly “of course I will” I replied.
At that Jennifer’s bodyguards came over, “time to go Ms Cambell” one of them said.
Jennifer nodded got up, swooped down and gently kissed me on the check then began to walk way flanked by her two security guards.
And I was left with the feeling of her kiss still lingering on my check.
