It was a quaint little day in St. Just. White clouds hovered peacefully over the village, looking as though they were cotton, so close they seemed almost touchable. This was a particular day, however.
A young and rather depressing girl by the name of Annabell had just moved into one of the vacant houses with her dear elderly aunt Willow. Willow, being a native to this village, was welcomed in open arms by the other elders. Anna was a different story entirely.
The people of St. Just took her as an abomination, always staring warily at her, glaring at her with a look of abhorrence.
Although it was in the middle of summer, St. Just still contained a chill to it, keeping Annabell from enjoying the outdoors and the activities that the town had to offer, especially when the sun was out. Her eyes were so sensitive, she always needed to wear tinted glasses, and just a small pinch of sunlight could blind her.On this particular day, however, when the sun just began to fall, and knock awoke Annabell from her book that she was hazily reading.
Who knocked on her door was the peculiar thing.
As soon as Annabell opened the old, timber door, she thought she was staring into a mirror. However, her thoughts immediately changed when the reflection started speaking to her.
"Good evening to you," she stated with a cheerful smile. "I noticed that I had a new neighbor starting today, and I just wanted to send my own welcoming committee of one."
Annabell, perching her head out of the doorway nervously, frowned at the girl. Being a mute, she had no choice but to sign the words I am sorry, but I cannot talk.
"Oh, but you can hear me, correct?” the girl asked. Anna signed I am mute, not deaf. This just caused the girl to laugh. Anna was wary of this girl, but still she persisted on trying to tolerate her.
“My name is Abbigail, by the way! Nice to meet you…?” Annabell “Nice to meet you, Annabell!”
Just Anna. Annabell signed to her quickly. “Then, you can just call me Abbi!” Abbigail said with a grin. Anna rolled her eyes. "Can I come in?"
Before Anna could tell her no, she had already skipped into the living room and had sat down on the couch.
"You know..." Abbi said, staring into the mirror that hung on the wall across from her, "we look like mirror images, you know?" Anna scratched her head in irritation. This girl was too scatter-brained for her interest.
She was just about to sign her to tell her to leave, but Aunt Willow had just walked in, catching sight of both of the girls. Anna immediately ran to her and dragged her into the kitchen. I don't understand... Anna signed to her aunt. Who is that girl, and why does she look just like me?
Aunt Willow stared across the hallway where the mysterious girl stood, looking curiously at family photos that hung on the walls. Occasionally, she would point and laugh at one. Aunt Willow shook her head slowly.
"I'm sorry, hun." she said slowly, letting Anna have the opportunity to read her lips. "I really don't know who this girl is or why she is here." Anna glanced over at her. She says she is here to greet us as new neighbors...
"Then there is nothing more to the story. I suppose she just looks a lot like you...and that is all there is to it." But, Aunt Willow... Anna signed furiously at her. Willow grabbed her hands firmly and patted them, calming Anna. "That is all there is to it."
Just then, Abbi came bounding toward the couple. She smiled vigorously at the old woman. "You look so familiar!" she yelped with a cheerfulness that made Anna sick to the bone. "I think I know you!"
"No, you don't, child." Willow said with a slow shake of her head. "I have not been here in almost thirteen years. You would to have been...how old are you, dear?"
"Fifteen ma'am. I am going to be fifteen this August, ma'am...August 12." Willow and Anna looked at eachother nervously. It just so happened that Anna's birthday was the exact same date, and she was the exact same age...
Anna stared at the girl named Abbi for what felt for an eternity, taking in all of her features, comparing them to herself. Abbi seemed to be a perfect clone of her.
Who in the world was she? That was something Anna was bound and determined to find out...
