I've been studying French while I've been laid off. So far I have read 5 books on the French language. I can just about read basic French now so I've been exploring the francophone world online. I can lurk on http://www.skyrock.com which gives me some insight into how the French live their lives. I've also found some online bandes dessinées (i.e. webcomics) which provide excellent material to reinforce my vocabulary.
My goal is to be able to read French. I want to read bandes dessinées and trashy French novels like un roman policier. I'm sick of French intellectuals like Jean-Paul Sarte. Being limited to French literature and philosophers is what killed my francophilia. It was just too boring. But France has a very diverse culture which you can explore once you learn the language.
Today I got another copy of Orkus, a German magazine for the Gothic subculture. I plan to visit Berlin for my next major vacation so I want to expose myself to as much German culture as possible. I'm getting kind of tired of German literature and history (which is mostly dismal).
I got this copy of Orkus from a Greek merchant on eBay. These magazines are hard to come by here in the United States.
I plan to check out more German goth and industrial bands instead of focusing on dreary German novels.
