I'm currently putting a lot more effort into mastering web design. I have been trying to move away from programming for quite some time but now I'm more dissatisfied with writing code and more into doing something creative.
I'm especially interested in dark web site designs and the design elements used in gothic music advertising, album cover art, and fanzines. Of course, a lot of goth design is just tacky with all those bats and skulls. In order to create something really tasteful you have to draw upon historical design patterns.
I have seen some interesting work on web design sites that could be adapted to goth sensibilities. For example, today I found an interesting web site that was designed to look like a Victorian home with an antique clock, a mantelpiece, gas lamps, and framed photos of relatives.
Today I discovered the work of Caitlin R. Kiernan, a goth writer. There seems to be many more goths who write horror novels than I suspected. I guess anyone can write a vampire novel and get it published. This aspect of "dark culture" has not interested me much because there are too many cheap vampire paperbacks of uneven quality.
But Caitlin R. Kiernan is probably one of the better writers. I've examined her photos on MySpace and she definitely is into the goth lifestyle. She is also a serious paleontologist which makes her an interesting character in her own right. She appears to have been quite successful as she has worked with Neil Gaiman and DC/Vertigo Comics and wrote the film novelization of Beowulf. I've ordered two of her books and if I like them I'll read more of her work.
