Last evening I watched Ingmar Bergman's "The Silence". I'm surprised that this film is not popular with goths because it is somewhat surreal, erotic, and morbid. Most of the film takes place in a grand hotel which is empty except for a group of circus midgets. They were the most overtly surreal element. However the film is also quite severe, being a grim expression of existential angst.
The trailer emphasized the controversial sex scenes which I found kind of funny given how austere and cold the film is by nature. If you rent this movie just on the basis of its sensationalistic reputation you'll probably be put off by its stark philosophical viewpoint.
For the past two days I've been watching episodes of the 1980's show Square Pegs on DVD. Square Pegs is the ideal 80s high school nostalgia for me because I was unaware of its existence in the 80s and only discovered it much later. Therefore it does not invoke any specific memories, bad or good. While this should limit its nostalgic qualities, the show so perfectly captures the 80s culture and mystique that it manages to be nostalgic while still seeming fresh and new to me. It has been compared to a John Hughes movie and those 80s teenager movies are now the quintessential 80s nostalgia.
Watching the show does make me extremely moody. It reminds me of a time when life seemed full of possibilities and the adventure was before me. "The future is so bright, I gotta wear shades". Life proved to be more mundane and uneventful than school and the media promised.
I miss school and have recurring dreams about going back to school. A thousand dreams have given school a mystical quality that far exceeds its reality. As a television fantasy, Square Pegs seems to possess this mystical quality.
I just booked a hotel room in Philadelphia for the YoTube gathering now that the location has been established. That is going to cost me $180 but at least I only need to stay one night. I will be driving to Philadelphia.
I used Google Maps street view to check out the location. Now I know exactly what it looks like. I will probably visit The Bourse shopping mall nearby and maybe the National Constitional Center.
I'll be taking lots of video for YouTube and I expect to meet some famous vloggers like Nalts, PrincessDiana, Skibby, VioletKitty411, Pipistrello, etc. Unfortunately, Zipster08 has a gig that day so he won't be there.
I'm really into Rammstein right now. I have not been this fascinated by a rock group in a long time. I've been watching their videos on YouTube. I only have 2 of their 5 studio albums so I ordered the other 3 from Amazon.
I like Rammstein because the German lyrics are very exotic. It is quite different from anything else I listen to. Till Lindemann, the lead singer, has a tragic air about him but he is also very masculine in a rough way. I can identify with him because he seems like an average man but with depth. The keyboard player looks very nerdy.
Tonight I started watching the "Volkerball" Rammstein DVD I bought to acquaint myself with the band. This is a very beautifully packaged DVD. I watched the live concert filmed at Les Arenes De Nimes in France. It was a very impressive show. Anyone that comes on stage with steel claws that have flamethrowers attached is going to do an impressive show!
It turns out that I was not entirely unfamiliar with Rammstein. I recognized their version of Depeche Mode's song "Stripped" which is included on a Depeche Mode tribute album. I've always liked that song and played it over and over but never thought to check out the band that recorded it.
I also have VNV Nation and Skinny Puppy live show DVDs which can make for a good concert night. But I look forward to seeing a real concert on the Gothic Cruise this year.
