The Spectre Of Monster Appeal

01:24 Mar 25 2010
Times Read: 540

I've been exploring the world of Lowbrow Art, a form of underground art based on pop surrealism. Today I went to the mall and found two art magazines in Border's newsstand, "RawVision" and "Juxtapoz". RawVision covers outsider art, art brut, and folk art so it was not quite as interesting.

Todd Schorr is one the most prominent members of the "Lowbrow" art movement. His painting "The Spectre Of Monster Appeal" is especially interesting for anyone who admires dark culture.

I'm really tempted to buy the debut monograph from Chris Mars for $40.00. His work is similar to Otto Dix.

Last Rites Gallery

Vampire Rave was no help to me in finding dark culture in NYC but I had better luck in joining the NYC cult of Vampire Freaks. They directed me to the Last Rites Gallery at http://www.lastritesgallery.com/about.php

Eurocide

12:12 Mar 20 2010
Times Read: 555

I've just ordered Eurocide's album "Regen Aus Asche". Eurocide is a German dark electro band. I heard one of their songs while listening to a German Goth internet radio station.

I've been exploring German culture but it has become too mundane for my tastes. Until you learn the language, you can only immerse yourself in what has been translated into English which is mostly literature and art films. I need to find more interesting fare in German pop culture to keep up my level of enthusiasm.

I just finished reading "Night Work" by the Austrian writer Thomas Glavinic. This is a great novel if you are interested in contemporary Vienna. I like the premise. A man wakes up one day to find himself the last man on earth. The disappearance of the entire world's population is never explained. According to Amazon. "Glavinic creates a more subtle if no less nightmarish mood than such similar books as The Day of the Triffids and I Am Legend." I thought the novel was slightly more literary than a horror novel.

German Dark Wave

21:28 Mar 19 2010
Times Read: 565

I've just ordered the book "Ästhetische Mobilmachung. Dark-Wave, Neofolk und Industrial im Spannungsfeld rechter Ideologien" from AbeBooks.com. I am learning German so this book should provide some additional incentive to master the language.

I recently received some French books on the German language; grammar, textbook, and dual language book. Before I started on German, I studied French so it helps me in both languages to struggle with a dual language book.

I've been going to New York City often so I found a German book on NYC. I was amused by this line, "Michael Bloomberg, der Bürgermeister von New York".
