A psych ward would probably be a hell of a lot scarier than a prison. The secure units we have here have a kind of hopeless feeling to them which always unnerves me.

I am fairly convinced the oldest is a sociopath, or at best a borderline personality.
She has no conscience whatsoever.
She has no understanding of just why extorting some of the other kids at school - with contracts - is wrong, or that there are consequences.
She's just frustrated and angry that she is in trouble.
And, let me make this really really clear: She has no idea why what she is doing is wrong, or why society has rules against it.
How do I convince her that she really should work within the bounds of society, whether she understands those bounds or not?
Gods know I don't understand the why of most of them, but I do understand that they exist. That's why my name is not "Inmate."

Am I allowed to have the "Sociopaths can live in society and not eat people or go to prison" conversation with her?
Paint her room prison cell gray and lock her in with nothing to do for hours at a time and see if she understands why working within the rules makes sense? IF that fails, follow Daire's advice :)
keep trying to explain maybe you'll get through to her...this is the same as my youngest saying "no" and "why" to everything. Including why it is wrong to try to break your brothers arm or legs and why it is not the right thing to do and that it is not a form of entertainment....still working on this...
Teenagers are really hard to fuck up. My brother inherited a pair of preteens about seven years ago and they blossomed under his care. This is my little brother, the one who used to use drainpipe to better send fireworks hurtling towards his best friends arse.
You will be fine. As long as you care whether you fuck up or not, you will be a big positive in their lives. They are lucky to have you on their side:)
Scary for you probably a lot of fun for them! If you're worried then you're going to do just fine. Remember you can't lock them in a closet or shoot them and it's all good. :)

Neti Pot.... get one... only make sure it's ceramic or stainless steel... the plastic ones are GROSS.
