My Best Friend Max

By: Christy Adkins

I remember long ago when we first met. It seems like it was decades ago however it had only been eight years. You were in the grade below me, but you were nice. And I knew the moment you said hello to me I wanted to know more about you. You intrigued me, with your dirty blond hair, and your hazel eyes that were more green then hazel. So we started hanging out, we were both pretty much outcasts then. There were a few other girls we hung out with, but you were always the most important. It seemed we were best friends, we had our little band “Five babes” I laugh at it now, we were so nieve. “The blue team” is still fresh in my mind. It was funny how every day we would run outside to play basketball in our make believe team, me, you, and Kayla. I thought we would never fall apart, but it seemed I was wrong.

Soon you drifted away to hang out with the other girls as their popularity increased and I stayed the outcast. I tried to tell myself that I hated you but I knew I didn’t, that I couldn’t. So I sat in the shadows as you went on about your ways. A few years passed, I hadn’t seen you in a long time. You were the farthest thought from my mind. Your brother remembered me though, I still laugh at the fact I had no idea how he knew me, and that I was ready to beat the crap out of him the next time he said hello. That was seventh grade. Then another year rolled around. I didn’t even remember you, but I as I saw you walk by me on the way to class something clicked in my head.

“hey I know her.” My brain told me, and then I called out your name.

“Brittney”

I remember watching you turn to me. The shock in your eyes. You wore a blue and purple sweater with a brown skirt. You hair had turned darker, more of a brown then the blond color it used to be. Your hair was a bit messy, but that was what made you well you.

“Hi,”

You said it to me with a confusion and shock that some strange girl knew your name. I smiled and we went on our way to class. I later found you sitting outside waiting for you mom in the farthest corner possible. You were eating yellow starburst. I remember you told me they were your favorite because they reminded you of your grandfather. I think by then you remembered who I was, because you were warm. However I asked anyways and you nodded.

“You’re Christy, from Patton.”

I sat then and from then on we became best friends. It was funny how we almost hated each other and then all the sudden two years later we would pick up right where we had left off. We went through the school year, and at the end of your 7th grade year, you had to switch schools. However, we agreed this wouldn’t split us up again. So we went to our separate schools, and every weekend (almost) we would go over to one another’s houses. Your family became like my second, and vise versa for you. It seemed nothing could come between us, but as our friendship grew so did my mother and father’s wanting to move. When my mom told me I was leaving, I remember begging her to let me stay in Orange County just so I could be with you. She agreed to let me stay until January. So I spent Thanksgiving and Christmas alone that year. That was also the year of the strike at Albertsons. We had a lot of fun waving those signs around. Most people were negative towards us but we didn’t care. All we cared about was having fun as most best friends did.

I think I finally realized I was moving when my mom called on the 17th of December to tell me she was coming to get me. I cried then, and told her I couldn’t go because I refused to miss your 15th birthday party. I think that’s when I noticed you were one of the most important people in my life at the moment too.

Leaving was hard, I cried all the way there. And when we came back a month later, I had to fight not to cry when I saw you again. We played DDR, and some BMX game all day just laughing, we were making fun of Yu-gi-oh. When my mom came to pick me up I almost ran for it, hoping that somehow someway she would forget about me. But I stood my ground and hugged you good-bye again as the white truck approached your apartment complex. That was more then two years ago, and I haven’t seen you since. You know it’s funny how after so long we are still best friends. I remember hearing once that you make a lot of friends, they come and they go but you only have one best friend, and you know what I’m really glad it’s you. I will love you forever and always.
