Cerberus and the Banshee
Forever he’s watched, and guarded these gates.
He’s listened to screams, of sorrow and hate.
“Enter,” he warns, “and you shall not leave.”
Then he captures the soul, as they turn to flee.
They beg and they plead, they cry and they whine.
They don’t wanna stay, Captured in time.
One head stayed up, and watched for new souls,
The two other stayed down, and guarded the old.
With the tail of a dragon, And 3 heads of a hound,
He was the most fearsome, of any around.
Then one day he heard, a voice as soft as can be,
He knew without doubt, it was sweet harmony.
She sang of love, of beauty so pure.
The more that she sang, the more that he yearned.
The one day he called, “Woman, come here,”
And the silhouette of a lady, soon it appeared.
“Your name,” he whispered.
“One of my dead, you are not.”
Then she lifted her voice, and proceeded to say.
“Dead I am not, but trapped I will stay.”
He reached through the gates, and pulled her near.
“What are you woman, and why are you here?”
“I am a banshee,” she’d said,
“Forced to roam the land of the dead.”
“I’ll make you a pact; one that trust me is fair.
You sing for me, and I’ll let you go up there.”
The fae quickly agreed, and then spun a song,
Thanking Cerberus, then she was gone.
That night she came back, and told of her time,
Above in the real world, but told it in rhyme.
For years and years, this kept on.
She came and she went, and sang him her songs.
Then one day before, she left him again,
She whispered, “I love you dear Cerberus, more than all men.”
And at that moment, he knew.
That in his heart of hearts, he loved her too.
When the banshee returned,
He whispered to her, “I’m setting you free my love,
You may return to Earth.”
With a smile of glee, she promised to him,
“I’ll return my love, just you wait and see.”
Then Hades appeared, and said to his guard,
“Don’t worry my son; Even the wildest are tamed by love.”
