The Mourning Sun
by James Dertinger (Vincent Wolf)
Raine sat patiently in the shadows, waiting for her prey. After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, she heard the tell-tale sounds of horse’s hooves on the road. Drawing her dagger, she watched and waited for the horse and it’s rider to come within range. Slowly, the horse loped into the clearing directly in front of her. She counted to three and let the blade fly, catching the horse in the jugular vein, it fell instantly.
The rider jumped to his feet, after falling off the horse, frantically looking around for the one who had murdered his beast. Before he could take his next breathe, Raine was upon him. Retrieving the dagger in mid-stride, she slammed the rider against a tree and rested the blood-soaked under his chin.
“Where is it?” she demanded
“Wh- Where is what?” The rider answered in feigned fear.
Her anger rising, she struck him with the hilt of her dagger across the chin, knocking out a tooth.
“Where is the amulet?” she said “I won’t ask nicely again”
“The amulet does not belong to you” Answered the rider “Your kind will never possess it”
This time his in insolence earned him a hard knee in the stomach, causing the blade to make a small cut in his throat, blood came down in rivulets.
“ Last chance” she growled “ Tell me, Where is the amulet?”
“Fine, fine I’ll tell you” he said frantically “The amulet is with my master in the clearing in the Westenbrook Forest. He’s waiting for you”
She brought the blade slamming into the rider’s guts.
“Thank you” she said sweetly
“It doesn’t matter” he said, blood pouring from his mouth “He will destroy you. You can never defeat Van-”
The blade slicing through his throat seemed to shut him up effectively. Letting the body fall, she took the sword from the scabbard on his hip.
“Westenbrook Forest” she thought out loud. “that’s five miles, gotta hurry to get the amulet before sunrise”
Sheathing the dagger, she bolted moving silently through the forest at break-neck speed.
…………………………………..
A little over an hour later, she was hiding in the shadows behind her opponent her eyes trained on his spine. Silently she again drew her dagger and let it fly.
In an instant, turned swiped the blade out of the air and threw it to the ground.
“You’ll have to do better thatn that to get what you want Raine the vampire”
“Just give the amulet, Van Helsing” threatened Raine drawing her sword “and I might let you live”
“I’ve spent my entire life making sure that your kind would never get the Mourning Sun amulet.” He replied “and that’s not about to change now”
“Suit yourself” she replied coolly “I’ll just have to kill you and take it.”
Raine charged at him with an over head slash. Van Helsing easily parried the blowing, knocking her off balance, he brought his boot into her ribs sending her to the ground.
“Your obsession with the amulet has blinded you. Your kind was never meant to walk in the sunlight”
Raine came to her feet and picked up her sword.
“It will be mine!!!” she screamed.
Their swords met once more. Blow for blow they matched one another, locked in an endless waltz of death that only one could escape. With each passing moment, the sky grew lighter as night began to fade.
Van Helsing came in for the charge. Raine instinctually retreated only to trip and fall into the dirt.
“You fight well Fallen One” he said “but not well enough”
Raine sat staring at him seemingly defeated, grasping her retrieved dagger behind her back. Van Helsing brought the blade over his head for the final blow.
Raine rolled and brought the dagger into his ribs, blood spilling onto the ground. Gasping, Van Helsing fell to his knees staring up at his killer. Raine reached down and unclasped the amulet from his neck.
“I’ll take the amulet” she said standing “and your head”
She swung the sword through his neck, decapitating him. Clasping the amulet onto her neck , she licked the blood off the blade and headed off into the morning sun on her way to London eager for her first breakfast.
