Lady Karei's Movie Reviews: "The Nut Job"

The Nut Job, from Gulf Stream pictures is about Surly, a curmudgeon, independent squirrel who is banished from his park and forced to survive in the city. Lucky for him, he stumbles on the one thing that may be able to save his life, and the rest of park community, as they gear up for winter - Maury's Nut Store.

If that description sounds boring to you, you basically figured out the film. In all fairness, the visuals are pretty good, but nothing we haven't seen before. I really wanted to like this film. I did. I even tried to FORCE myself to like it, but I couldn't.

Will Arnett, who voices Surly, really over does the whole north east accent. It was hard to even listen to him. I understand they wanted to portray him as a loner and a bit of a rascal but an accent alone doesn't always convey that. I tried to like the character, but much like the film, I couldn't. I do have to give props to the ever talented Brendan Fraser who voiced "Grayson" and was actually funny.

Maybe I'm not as much of an animal person as I thought, but a story about a few animals trying to break into a Nut Store, and the very weak sub plot of a human bank heist going on at the same time, just didn't do it for me. Also, it seems they writers came up with the title just to see how many snickers they could get from all the "Nut" jokes.

Even though the film did 20 million opening weekend, it had little family movie competition. Its only challenger was "Frozen" which has been out since November and it still managed to pull in 12 million, over half of what "The Nut Job" did on its opening week.

I'm going to go ahead and call it. This film is dead on arrival and I would be surprised if it passed 150 million domestically. Guess the studio will really find themselves in a real nut buster. ;-))

Lady Karei's Movie Reviews: "Frozen"

I looked at the "Editors Corner" and was rather disappointed by the lack of reviews there. Plus, its only horror movies. Just because this is a site that favors those of us who are a bit darker, it doesn't mean we only like Horror flicks. With this in mind, I present to all of my review of the latest Disney film, "Frozen".

The basic story line centers around Princess Elsa, who was born with the magical power to create Ice and snow, and her sister Princess Anna. Elsa has a hard time controlling her powers and after an accident as a child, locks herself away from the world so she won't hurt anyone else.

Fast forward several years. When its her turn to be Queen, at the party she is provoked and accidentally exposes her powers, sets off an eternal winter in the kingdom, then runs away. Her sister goes after her and the Adventure ensues.

This film breaks a lot of Disney tradition. The Queen isn't evil. Though true love does save the day in the end, there's a lot of twists and turns to it. This film marks the return of the more musical side of Disney. I personally found all the songs appealing and was surprised only one was nominated for an award.

The Animation is amazing and Disney has yet again developed new technology to help with the ever problematic concepts of making water, ice and hair look real. They truly blew it out of the park.

The movie strikes a great balance between musical bliss and well balanced jokes and gags. Its fun for every member in the family and I think one reason it has continued to stay in theaters so long is that slowly, people who maybe thought they didn't want to see it, finally are breaking down to see what all the hype is about. Honestly, I can tell you, if you want breath taking visuals, adventure, musical delights and need a good laugh, this movie is just for you.

My only regret is that I waited too long to see it and missed the 3D showing. I bet it was totally magical.
