I craft constantly. My home is evidence of it. Everything within my space has a purpose, from the altars to the mobiles. And the arrangement and placement of each thing builds a connection so my entire home is a creation in itself, each part working independently but also together as a whole.
From my stand point, the interface for me with item crafting comes from three things:
Need. What must the item do?
Materials. What do you have to work with?
Emotion. This is the tie and interface that most things I have work around.
The tarot magic I utilize for reaching desired effects is a good example of this. The cards each have symbolic meaning which can be tapped into and tailored to an energetic emotional push. The altars they are on and their placement make them items that can be constantly cycled and adjusted. I place a certain arrangement of cards on a specific altar not to divine that meaning but to bring that energy into my life.
Beyond those, there is of course glass, wood, stone, and metal that I work in for pure creation from beginning to end. The items I make are not attuned to me and brought to my level. Rather, they are attuned to be able to allow others who do not have my intuitive knowledge to access a specific ability or thing that I normally have access to.
Example: Scrying mirrors. I need not imbue them with visions. But knowing how intuitive vision works allows me to tune them so that others are more readily able to access that aspect of things.
For me Items of this nature have ever been a Way and method of connecting to things that I do not yet readily understand. I do not know the nature of a Blade until I hold it. And some then wield themselves.

Magick always takes the simplest path, and when you set out to change the world around you, that change may not always take the form you expect. While the end result is often what you were working toward, the chain of events that led up to that effect can sometimes be a surprise.
When one sets out to affect the world around them, they are merely redirecting their will from within to without.
Now the will is a very powerful tool and with focus truly anything can be achieved. The how is really the only question. Magick, like water, will take the simplest path.
If, for example, you wish to levitate a stone, you can sit and concentrate for all your worth and see no visible effect. Soon you walk away. Now another person coming along the same path, looks down and chooses to pick the rock up and throw it. The effect you willed, wished for has occurred. That rock is now levitating. Not by the method you would have chosen, but doing so just the same.
The simplest path. Ask for an effect and it can be. But be prepared for the conditions of that effect to be something other than expected. This also runs into the question of should I will this thing.
Mayhaps that person who stopped to pick up the stone now misses an
appointment, ect.. ect..
There is always a consequence to every action. And not all such can be
foreseen. With small thing the result in balancing is small. But the greater the attempt the greater the rebound. Learn yes, but be prepared for the things you do not expect.
