Taking a Stand

Ok - I have had it...

You know what I am a little sick and tired of. Overpriced, over planned and seriously RIDICULUS birthday parties for children. No wonder kids expect the world to be handed to them on a silver platter!

Now I will admit that there is a certain lure to having someone else entertain the pack of screaming kids and I will also concede that not having to clean up said mess is also enticing.

But dam - What ever happened to parties at your house with those silly cone hats and some silly games where the kids actually HAD TO INTERACT with each other and not some computerized gizmo or over inflated bounce house.

I have said this before - I live in an affluent area of the United States - too affluent if you ask me. Lately it seems as if everything everyone does is just to out do someone else. Now I will admit that I CHOSE to live here because it has one of the best public school systems in the whole country but this is getting out of hand.

I could afford to live in a mc Mansion - but I choose not to. What the hell do I need with 5 bathrooms??

I can afford to drive a BMW or a Mercedes - but I choose not to. To me that is a waste of money. My good old Honda is just fine thanks - AND it does not matter to me if you spill something on the seat.

I can afford to have designer clothes and dress my daughter in designer clothes - but I choose not to. To be honest here I do spend a lot on shoes....but I mean COME ON - they are shoes! I buy clothes when I need them and I focus more on comfort and what I like then what the latest style is or name on my ass. Kids grow so fast that it is just not worth the money. My daughter has stuff with the tags still on them for gods sake. Plus they need to PLAY - to get DIRTY.....who wants to worry about ripping your $ 300 pair of jeans!

It may be a bit silly but I work hard to NOT show my daughter just how much we have. I want her to appreciate the things that she gets - to earn them. I see so many of these kids behave like animals when they do not get something. Trust me - idle hands and all that. I was given everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, I asked for and it is a miracle that I am still alive. I want better for my daughter.

So I have decided to take a stand. My daughter's 6th birthday is next month and we have decided to have it here at my house. I went online and found a great site (based on a blog for parents that feel the same way I do) on how to throw a great themed birthday party. My little one is SOOOOOOOO excited!! It is going to be fairy themed and I have asked her babysitter (who is a young aspiring actress) to come over dressed as tinker bell to help me entertain the girls. Now I still have to put all the details together but I am excited about this.

Just pray that it does not rain!!!

More to come - I will post pictures of all the things that I put together in cases any one else wants to take a stand on my soap box.

I never understood some parents' need to show off what they have, especially through their kids. It turns them in to spoiled brats.

As we have twins it is easier if we hire a soft play/adventure park which we do for a couple of hours and have the party there. We do all the food ourselves as this also saves money. We don't have an entertainer.

I am very house proud so I don't like the thought of other kids spilling stuff over my carpet/floor, or dirty fingers everywhere.

It costs about £70 pounds and to do all the food is about £30 so we save for it as we don't have loads of money.

A fairy party sounds awesome!

And I totally agree with everything you said too. Even though I don't have kids. *nods*
