Serbia 1
Germany nil
What a fine day it was today in South Africa on this 8th day of the group stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Early this morning while most of you were at work, we had an excellent match-up between crowd favorite Germany and underdog Serbia in a great match in Group D of the World Cup. Coming into the bout Germany was picked as the team to win the match over Serbia without much effort. However, Serbia showed great effort on the field this morning and gave Germany a good challenge proving to many that this Serbian team would not go down without a fight. What a tremendous effort they put up, tearing down the stalwart German defense and chipping away at it until it crumbled under persistent pressure from the Serbian frontlines led by lone striker Milan Jovanovic, as Serbia played out of a 1-5-4 formation. Trouble started early for Germany as Miroslav Klose was ejected from the match at 36' due to a hard challenge from behind, picking up his second yellow of the match which led to his red and his ejection from the rest of the match. Then a few minutes later at 38' of gameplay, after chasing down a long ball down the sideline followed by a beautiful cross fed to the far post from Serbian midfielder Milos Krasic to Nikola Zigic. He then delivered it to Milan Jovanovic via a header who then hammered it home in the back of the net putting it past German keeper Manuel Neuer with a flying sidekick netting his tenth international goal. The overjoyed Milan Jovanovic then raced off the field of play vaulting a barrier who was then met by the ecstatic Serbian fanbase. Then at 46' after a strong drive down the the left side of the field, German striker Lukas Podolski fired a shot towards Serbia's Vladamir Stojkovic off of a half-volley just shanking it wide of the far-side post and rolling out for a goal kick. After yet another strong drive by Germany at 59' with a long lobbing pass in to the goal box by Lukas Podolski, refeere Alberto Undiano Mallenco pointed to the penalty line signaling for a penalty kick after a foul inside the box by a Serbian defenseman. Lukas Podolski squared up at the line for the penalty kick. Reading a lean favored to the right of Lukas Podolski telegraphing an aim at the right corner of the goal, Serbian keeper Vladamir Stojkovic dove to his left however Podolski shanked it wide. Germany had its chances late in the match but they failed to deliver walking away from this match empty-handed with an outcome of one to nil in favor of a very energetic Serbian underdog team delivering a big upset in one of the most thrilling and close games out of Group D today. Serbia came out and played with a lot of heart and a lot of spirit and it showed through their hustle on the field, however Germany on the other hand came out looking for an easy victory but was delivered a heartbreaker as the Serbians gave the Germans a run for their money. Germany had some scoring chances late in the game however they failed to follow through with their shots and a strong Serbian defense grabbed up possesion before the Germans could even recover. Overall an excellent game of play and with this win today Serbia looks like the likely underdog team that could be this year's sleeper team and the team to beat.
