+Chapter 1+

I looked out of the window, seeing the sun setting just beyond the horizon. Windows were already drawn, even though the darkness hadn’t settled over the town. There was no one outside, as we had all decided that after the tragedy that befell our little community, we would not venture into the darkness again. I turned slowly seeing my sword leaning against the wall, my armor hanging on its stand. I sighed deeply realizing that the blade would still be stained with blood of those I had slain. I had not had the strength to clean it after the final battle. Suddenly, I heard a noise outside, causing me to turn back to the window sharply. I saw a bird shoot by the window, and forced myself to laugh slightly at myself. I was still jumpy, even after all this time. I heard the soft landing on the perch outside, and felt myself slowly walking towards the door to my home. I opened it enough for the bird to fly in, and then shut it quickly with a snap. The bird fluttered to a landing on the arm of my chair, and I saw the note strapped to its leg.

“Adelle,

We will be meeting tomorrow evening before dusk settles in. Will you be able to make it? I know you will not respond tonight, but be sure to send a reply by noonhigh tomorrow.

Cirius”

I sighed deeply, and turned towards my room. Not wanting to think of these things right now, and yet knowing that the nightmares would plague me again this night. I found myself dreading the night now, images of those I cared for dying again. It was too much for one person to try and deal with…and yet, I couldn’t escape it. I heard the bird swoop past me, looking for a reward for delivering the message on time and to the right person. It found what it wanted in a small mouse that was scurrying along the wall. I cringed, feeling the soul of the mouse pass from this life into the next realm. I could only hope that it would not end up in the same place as those other souls I had taken from this life.

As I crawled into my make shift bed, I felt the familiar terror begin to settle over me like a blanket. I felt the tears sting my eyes and my breath begin to falter. I didn’t know how I would make it through another night of those bloody images. I started to chant the words that never really helped and felt myself slowly drift off to sleep.

In the dark mist a tall slender figure in a dark robe composed of dead souls stood tall. In his bony hand was a large scythe dripping with the blood of many. As he slowly turned his eyes pierced her soul and struck fear in her heart. As she watched in fear he struck down the legion that attacked him with ease blood flying through the air and bloody body parts scattering in every which direction with the sound of bones crushing. The blood dripped from his scythe like a crimson river pooling up on the ground around him. His gaze stared right through her and seemed to tear her apart. She saw the power that was before her and she knew she was no match so she turned to run. Death’s dark and bloody wings sprouted from his body and he lurched into the air and chased after her as she ran in fear for her life. He managed to get ahead of her and land on the ground in front of her and she screeched to a halt and her legs faltered as she fell to her knees. Death raised his scythe above his head as her life flashed before her. Down came the scythe with lightning fast swiftness as it decapitated her. On the return trip the end of the scythe’s blade impaled her body as it lifted her into the air. “Hmph…you know not to defy me…” He tossed the body aside and slowly walked away from the bloodbath.

I felt myself sit straight up in bed as the screaming woke me. It took me a few moments to realize the screaming was coming from me. As sweat dripped down my neck, I tried to stop my body from shaking. I quickly swung my legs over the side of bed, intending to get myself water. I stopped as I felt the slick surface of the floor. I felt the shudder climb from my legs up to my spine. I reached over to the lantern next to my bed and lit it. I felt the scream rise up as I saw that my feet were drenched red with blood.

I screamed again and then looked down at the floor again. There was nothing there. I sat with my legs pulled up, gasping for air. The bird called softly, attempting to calm my nerves. I felt the tears well up, and began to cry softly. The terrors of that battle would not let me rest. I could not escape them, and they were always worse at night. I knew I would not sleep for the rest of the night. Sighing to myself, and wiping my eyes dry, I turned to look at the bird. “I suppose I shall write my response then.” I muttered to myself.
