Queen Cleopatra's Beauty Secrets...

23:00:32 - Jul 30 2013

Times Read: 110

Portraits of Queen Cleopatra, living in the first century before Christ, show that she certainly wasn't a ravishing beauty, but she was obviously attractive enough to attract the most inaccessible and formidable men of her time :-)

Cleopatra also developed the art of self-adornment into a science, aiding her in beguiling her Roman admirers, Caesar and Antony. Moreover, Cleopatra was the first of the high priestesses of an era of cosmetics, and knew enough about the feminine arts of beauty to write a book about it, and to become a STANDARD for feminine beauty!

Not only was Cleopatra a standard for feminine beauty, but all sorts of beauty creams, oils, balms, gels and salts have been based on her. And, on her own dressing-table there undoubtedly would have been countless wooden, alabaster and ivory containers (such as boxes, bottles and vases,) the substances therein designed to add further enchantment to her body.

In addition, Cleopatra adored anything at all to do with beauty (like many feminine ladies of today *wink*) and had at her disposal a small army of perfumers, wig-makers, and sandal-makers - as well as loyal guardians of the royal wardrobe. Yes doves, Cleopatra certainly adored beauty, and her spirit demanded such beauty also in her homes and surroundings.

The lotus blossomed on the handle of her spoon, and her wine sparkled in the deep blue calyx of the same flower. The limb of a lion, carved from ivory, probably upheld the couch upon which she slept. And, the ceiling over her bed was probably a starry heaven that rested upon palm tree trunks - each crowned with its graceful tuft of drooping foliage.

In Cleopatra's living areas, Papyrus stems probably rose from the floor to support the azure roof, with birds twittering on the swaying grass-tops.... Perhaps doves and butterflies flitted across the walls too, and the floors were frescoed with the opulent green of rich marsh-grasses - and with fish gliding among their roots! You'd also have probably spotted somewhere a goose, a gazelle and a fox.

Now my feminine lovelies, let's take a look at the beauty tips and secrets, as well at the beauty regime of Cleopatra....

Cleopatra's Beauty Tips and Secrets for Having Beautiful Skin

In Cleopatra's day, the custom of anointing the body with oil, such as ambrette oil (obtained from the seeds of Hibiscus plants,) or fenugreek oil, was essential - due to the hot climate. And, despite Cleopatra's skin being at risk of being constantly scorched by the sun and sand, the beauty of her skin was just AMAZING.

To keep her facial skin clean and beautiful, Cleopatra would wash her face several times a day, using a cleansing cream made of oil and lime (or chalk.) Apple cider vinegar and water was used as a facial rinse, and honey was often applied to her skin as an antibacterial.

Several facial masks were also included in her beauty regime, and were attributed to the superb condition of her skin. The masks were often composed of milk, honey, cucumber, yeast and clay. Warm ass's milk and honey in equal doses was a favorite facial mask of Cleopatra's, as was a clay mask.

To keep her skin smooth and exfoliated, Cleopatra would have her body regularly rubbed and polished with numerous body scrubs – in particular sea salt scrub. Among other ingredients used in Cleopatra's skincare were balsam, cedar, beeswax, calamine, castor oil, aloes, apple cider vinegar, turpentine, goose-fat, dill, fennel, juniper, mint, ginger, antimony, sulfur, red lead and onions.

An effective wrinkle preventative was sometimes applied to Cleopatra's face, and was prepared with beeswax, the gum of frankincense, maringa oil, fermented plant juice and finely ground cyprus grass. Then there was the 'Balm of Mecca,' which was held in the HIGHEST repute by Cleopatra (as well as all the ladies of the East,) and was used in her beauty regime to render the skin incomparably soft and silky smooth.

Every night before going to bed, Cleopatra would anoint her face and neck with Balm of Mecca (or Balsam of Gilead as it's called in the bible,) which is a resinous gum of the 'Commiphora gileadensis' tree. Then, the following morning, thousands of minute scales would be detached from the skin - from every part in which this precious balm had been applied.

It was also at her bath that Cleopatra anointed herself with this wonderful skincare balm. She'd sit in the bath until she was very warm, then she'd start anointing her face and neck, with an ample and copious ablution - rubbing herself until her skin had fully absorbed the balm. Balm of Mecca would leave Cleopatra's skin incomparably delicate and buttery.

For treating scars, an ointment made from frankincense and honey would be applied daily to the scar. An alternative treatment was to apply a bandage soaked in honey and carob to the scar.

And, here's some natural homemade skin care recipes for you to incorporate into your own beauty regime; Buttermilk and Fennel Cleansing Milk (for oily skin)

1/2 cup buttermilk

2 tabs of crushed fennel seeds

Heat the milk and fennel seeds on top of a double boiler for 30 minutes. Turn off heat, and let it steep for 2 hours. Cool, strain, and then pour into a bottle and refrigerate. This cleansing milk keeps for 2 weeks. Cleopatra's Sesame Oil-Pulling Cleanser (For Dry Skin)

Apply sesame oil to your face and neck. Then, help to 'pull' and remove the oil from your skin, as well as the makeup from your skin with a washcloth that's been soaked in hot water, and then wrung out. Finish with a apple cider vinegar rinse which is also a wonderful pH Balancer. Cleopatra's Grape Facial (for over-sunned faces)

1 cup of green grapes

1 tsp of honey

Crush the green grapes to a pulp. Add the honey and mix. Apply to a clean, damp face and leave it on for 15 minutes. Rinse well. Cleopatra's Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse (restores the natural pH balance or acid mantle to your skin)

1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar

1 basin filled with warm water

Pour the apple cider vinegar into the warm water. Thoroughly splash your face with the rinse. And, then let your face dry without using a towel. Acne sufferers should try this also, but be sure to start with a perfectly clean face! Cleopatra's Soothing Cucumber Cream Recipe

1 whole cucumber, unpeeled

1/2 oz of white paraffin

2 oz of sweet almond oil

Cut the cucumber into chunks and purée it in the food processor or blender. Strain the pulp through a strainer lined with cheesecloth. Melt the wax in a small bowl in the top of a glass or enamel double boiler over medium heat. As soon as the wax is melted, slowly add the oil, stirring gently. Add the strained cucumber and blend thoroughly.

Remove the pot from the heat and cover with a clean towel. Let the mixture cool very slowly to prevent crystals from forming in the wax. Then, stir mixture once or twice until cool. When the mixture is completely cool and smooth, store it in a tightly capped glass container in the refrigerator. It will keep for two months.

To use in your beauty regime, smooth a bit of cream every night around the tender skin of your face and neck. Cleopatra's Royal Rose Face Cream

2 oz of almond oil

1/2 oz of beeswax

4 to 8 drops rose oil

Vitamin E capsule (optional)

Slowly heat the almond oil, beeswax and rose oil. Beeswax is the thickener, so the more you add, the thicker the cream. It's best to start with just a little. If, after the mixture has cooled, you decide you'd like it to be thicker, simply reheat it and add more beeswax.

If you find that the cream is too thick, simply reheat it and add more almond oil. Moreover, if you'd like to add vitamin E to the cream, cut open a vitamin E capsule and add the gel inside to the cream. Cleopatra's Mud and Yogurt Facial Pack

3 tabs of fuller’s earth

3 tabs of plain yogurt

Mix ingredients to make a paste and then pat onto your face with gentle, upward strokes. Let the face pack dry on your skin for 15 to 20 minutes. Then, rinse off with warm water.

Acne Facial Scrub

2-1/4 tsp of yogurt

1-1/2 tsp of fine salt

1 tsp of brewer’s yeast

Mix the ingredients in a glass bowl. Gently massage into your skin (the salt is the exfoliant.) Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Scented Salt Body Scrub

3 cups of fine sea salt

3/4 cup of olive oil

3/4 cup of sweet almond oil

Essential oils (as desired)

Mix salt, olive oil, and almond oil in a glass bowl. Add an essential oil, such as peppermint, for scent. Store in a tightly sealed glass jar. Massage a tablespoon or two of the scrub onto your skin, massaging in small circles. Leave to sit on your skin for at least five minutes. Then, rinse.

Cleopatra's Mint Souffle Mask (for tired skin)

1 tab of ground or powdered spearmint

1 tab of good cold-pressed oil

1 tab of honey

Whirl in the blender until fluffy. Apply to clean skin. Cleopatra's Antiseptic Honey Mask

1 egg yolk

2 tabs of honey

10 drops of almond oil

Whip until creamy. Store any extra in the refrigerator – and a wide-mouth jar for future use. Cucumber Facial Mask (for oily skin)

1/2 cucumber

1 egg white

1 tab of lemon juice

1 tsp of mint

Puree everything and refrigerate for 10 minutes. Apply the mixture to your face and leave it on 15 minutes. Rinse with hot then cool water. Cure-All Moisturizer

Straight olive oil is a very good moisturizer and serves multiple purposes. However, if you can’t stand the smell, add a few drops of essential oil. To soften your cuticles, dip a cotton ball in some olive oil, and then dab on tops of your fingernails and rub in. Moreover, for a great split ends treatment, shampoo your hair, and use olive oil in place of conditioner on ends only. Then, rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Cleopatra's Beauty Tips and Secrets for Comfort, Hygiene and Cleanliness

Since cleanliness was so highly regarded by Cleopatra, taking a bath was one of the most important daily beauty regimes for her, and she bathed frequently. In addition, Cleopatra kept her skin soft and beautiful by regularly bathing in ass's milk and honey.

**And, since the smell of milk and honey represents sweetness and youth, it can also suggest 'delicious young woman!'

Now cupcakes, to make a modern-day version of the Cleopatra milk and honey bath, dissolve a cup of honey in a liter of hot (not boiled) milk, and then pour the mixture into the bath. Dry milk powder can also be added to the bath.

Ideally, the temperature of the bath should be 36-37 degrees, and the bath taken for 10-15 minutes.

Here's some bath more recipes; Cleopatra's Milk and Honey Bath

1 cup of sea salt

1/4 cup of baking soda

1/2 cup of red turkey oil

Rose or jasmine essential/fragrance oil

Combine the honey, milk, salt and baking soda in a bowl. Then, fill your bathtub with warm water and pour in the mixture. Then, add the red turkey oil and a few drops of fragrance. Minty Watermelon Bath Oil

1/2 cup of castor oil

1/2 teaspoon of spearmint oil

1/2 teaspoon of watermelon fragrance oil

Simply blend all three ingredients together by shaking them up in a jar. Then it's ready to use. This is a very refreshing and mind-easing blend :-) Cleopatra's Cleansing Honeyed Bath Salts

1 1/2 cups of Epsom Salts (or rock sea salt)

1/3 cup of liquid honey

2 drops of yellow food coloring

3 drops essential oil (optional, as honey gives off a nice sweet scent)

Take the salts and place them in a bowl with the honey. Stir them together very well (however, it will seem a little sticky!) Add your two drops of yellow food coloring to the essential oil - if you choose to use it. Oils that are good would be juniper, rose or jasmine. Then, take the oil and color mixture, and stir it into the salts, and cover in a bowl for about 30 minutes.

Use 1/4 cup of recipe for each bath, drop into hot running water. Queen Cleopatra's Romance and Passion Bath Oil

4 drops of ylang ylang oil

4 drops of frankincense oil

4 drops of jasmine oil

4 drops of sandalwood oil

4 drops of rose otto oil

Measure out the ingredients as needed above, drop by drop, and placing them under the flow of your warm running bath water. Then cupcakes, light a few candles, relax and allow your mind to clear of all other thoughts, and just let your senses stimulate your thoughts, as well as to warm your body, mind and soul! Cleopatra's Silky Facial and Bath Recipe

8 drops of essential oils (choose 3 or 4 oils from these essential oils: cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, fennel, cypress, pine, spruce, juniper, spearmint, peppermint or thyme.)

A 4 oz jar

Add the sea salt, baking soda and oils to a jar. Gently shake to mix well.

And, here's a home-made beauty recipe for cooling the body doves; Cleopatra's Cooling Foot and Body Powder

This light, fragrant powder absorbs moisture and fights bacteria – to eradicate perspiration and body odor. It also has an antiseptic and antifungal action.

Ingredients;

1/2 cup of powdered arrowroot

1/2 cup of cosmetic clay

2 tbs of powdered ginger

10 drops of spearmint essential oil

Cleopatra Beauty Tips and Secrets for Having Beautiful Eyes

Cleopatra had beautiful, dark, almond-shaped eyes, which were always outlined with an application of black kohl - or with green malachite. The outline would be applied with a round-ended stick – made from materials such as obsidian, haematite or bronze.

Or it would be applied with the paint bottle's stopper, elongated into a stem to be dipped into the paint. Her eyelids and brows were also enhanced with moistened kohl powder – increasing the beauty and appearance of her eyes by making them look larger.

Another cosmetic used by Cleopatra for enhancing her eyes was black sulphide of antimony (mestem,) and she used this eye-paint to darken her eyebrows and eyelashes. The mestem was rubbed into the edges of the lids and the lashes, then followed the painting of the lower lid and eyebrow. Moreover, Cleopatra believed that eye-paint was an effective preventative for certain diseases of the eye.

As a part of Cleopatra's beauty regime, an overnight eye treatment consisting of goose fat and kohl would be also applied to the eyelids. Or a special paste prepared from galena, lapis lazuli, malachite, honey, ochre and ore was applied. This eye treatment was kept in little bags of linen or leather, and had to be ground on a palette into a fine powder. Then, the powder would be poured into vases or tube-shaped containers - from which it would be extracted and applied with a thin stick.

A favorite eye wash that Cleopatra used was prepared from ground celery and hemp. Moreover, to cool and soothe her eyes, a concoction of ground jasper or serpentine, mixed with water, would be applied to the eyelids. An alternative preparation was made with ground carob and fermented honey.

However, Cleopatra knew that nothing made the eyes more brighter or more beautiful than falling in love! Hence the old Egyptian love poem that went like this;

“Like eye-paint is my desire. When I see you, it makes my eyes sparkle.”

Cleopatra's Beauty Tips and Secrets for Having Beautiful Nails, Hands and Feet

Cleopatra regularly gilded her nails, as well as the palms of her hands and soles of her feet with an orange or red color – made from henna leaves. Beautiful geometric designs were also applied to her hands and feet with henna.

Cleopatra's Beauty Tips and Secrets for Having Beautiful Lips and Cheeks

Cleopatra loved to highlight her lips with a vivid red lip color, applying the color with a small cosmetics brush (much like the women of today.) Or, with a little spatula, she'd apply tinted lip gloss. However, in those days tinted lip gloss was made from red ochre and fat - or from one of the plants used for dyeing.

In addition, to give a lovely glow to her cheeks, Cleopatra had rouge applied to her cheeks – made from red ochre, fat and gull resin.

Cleopatra's Beauty Tips and Secrets for Beautiful Breasts

For natural breast enhancement, Cleopatra would massage her breasts with a breast serum containing fennel, fenugreek and dill. These herbs also contain phytoestrogens; natural plant hormones that mimic the estrogen that's found in a woman's body.

Estrogen is also the sex hormone that's responsible for having a healthy reproductive system, as well as for promoting optimum growth in the body. The functions of estrogens can be duplicated by phytoestrogens too, and if you use breast serums containing them, you can experience the growth of breast tissue.

Cleopatra's Beauty Tips and Secrets for Smelling Divine

From Arabia, traders came to Cleopatra on camels, laden with myrrh, frankincense etc. And, Queen Cleopatra always smelled divine around her man; ONE breath.... and then the endless embrace!

Cleopatra not only loved the art and mystery of compounding perfumes for her personal use, but for medical and physiological use - as perfumes were believed to possess great medicinal, as well as physiological virtues.

So naturally, Cleopatra would use certain aromatics to influence men; to make them feel comfortable in her presence, to increase their enchantment, or to become submissive!

Or, to bring back the precious moment of an exotic night *wink*

How exacting Cleopatra had to be in choosing her perfumes as well; the only scent, for the only one.....In particular, Cleopatra loved the rose, jasmine and myrrh perfumes, and her hair was lavishly perfumed too - yet another component of her feminine attractiveness.

In fact, Cleopatra used perfumes and aromatics just about everywhere - at great cost and in great profusion! In addition, perfumes made from iris, lotus, frankincense, sandalwood, cinnamon and Mignonette were often used.

The oldest of all surviving perfume trade-marks is the ancient Egyptian name of 'Kyphi.' Kyphi was the most sacred of all the religious fragrances, and every night it was offered by the priests in their temples. However, for Cleopatra, Kyphi was not confined to the gods.

In addition, to repel body odor, she's rub little pellets of ground carob and essential oils onto her skin. She also placed little balls of incense where her limbs met.

Here's a wonderful perfume recipe for you to try doves; Cleopatra's Oriental Nights Perfume (contains natural plant pheromones)

4 drops of sandalwood essential oil

3 drops of frankincense essential oil

4 drops of musk fragrance oil

2 tsp of jojoba oil

Mix all the ingredients together in a small bottle and shake well. Allow the perfume to settle for at least 12 hours. Store in a cool dry place. Use with caution ;-)

And, a bonus Scent recipe;

Cleopatra's Sexual Energy Oil (also contains natural plant pheromones!)

2 drops of cardamom

4 drops of ginger

5 drops of patchouli

4 drops of sandalwood

Dilute in 1/2 oz carrier oil.

Cleopatra's Beauty Tips and Secrets for Having Beautiful Hair

Cleopatra was very proud of their hair, and dressed it with numerous ornamented combs and pins. Delicately-carved ivory combs kept Cleopatra's tresses sleek and untangled. And, any hairforbidden, whether it involved waves, curls or braids, would be kept firmly in place with a setting lotion - made from beeswax and resin.

Moreover, for special festive occasions, or to protect her hair from the heat of the sun, Cleopatra would wear various wigs and hairpieces made from human hair.

However, despite being a fan of elaborate wigs and hairpieces, Cleopatra still aimed to keep her own natural hair in good condition. And, Egyptian women happened to be so proud of their hair, that when their hair got very long, locks of it would be cut off and then wrapped up for safe keeping - to be buried in their tomb after death.

There were also unguents for preventing grey hairs from appearing– such as an unguent made from the black horn of a gazelle. A unguent to cover grey hairs was made from oil mixed with juniper berries and two unidentified plants. The astringent properties of juniper also stimulated the scalp.

Moreover, the hair-dye used by Cleopatra is credited to Schesch, the mother of Teta, who was the wife of the first King of Egypt. This is also the oldest known prescription for hair-dye!

In order to make her hair grow faster, Cleopatra had chopped lettuce placed on her scalp, or the scalp was anointed with equal parts of cedar-wood oil and fat. She also used deep conditioning hair treatments in her beauty regime. And, here's a recipe; Cleopatra's Honey Treatment for Dry Damaged Hair

3 tabs of honey

1 tablespoon of good oil (such as olive, coconut or avocado oil, which have been proven to penetrate into the cortex of the hair.)

Combine the homey and the oil, and stir for a minute or so until the mixture is smooth. Apply to freshly shampooed hair, and then let soak in for 10-12 minutes. Rinse off the hair conditioning treatment with plenty of warm water. Hot Oil Treatment for Hair

1 tsp of olive oil

2 tsp of castor oil

Combine the ingredients and warm over a low heat. Then, massage the hot oil treatment into your scalp, as well as all over your hair. Once you're done, wrap your hair in a hot towel and relax with it on your head for at least 15 minutes. Shampoo and rinse out. Frizz Tamer for Hair

1/2 cup of any hair conditioner

1/4 cup of honey

1 tbs of almond oil

Mix the ingredients well, then pour the mixture over damp hair, working it in well. Leave it on for about 30 minutes for a really good deep conditioning. Wash out with shampoo.

Cleopatra's Beauty Tips and Secrets for Having Hair-free Skin

Part of Cleopatra's beauty regime involved removing body hair with a razor, although a number of hair removal creams were sometimes used for the same purpose. One such cream consisted of the crushed and boiled bones of a particular bird, that were then mixed with cucumber, gum, oil and sycamore juice.

The mixture would be heated and then applied to the body hairs, presumably to be pulled off when cold, with the hair adhering to it. Tweezers were also used for removing individual hairs.

Cleopatra's Beauty Tips and Secrets for Having Fresh Breath

To improve and perfume the breath, Cleopatra chewed cachous pastilles. These pastilles were prepared from kyphi (an incense made from honey, wine, myrrh, raisins, junipers, fig leaves, clover, cardamom, sorrel, calamus, galange, rosin, aspalathus, mastich amd asphalt.

Alternative breath freshening remedies were to chew frankincense and herbs, or to chew a piece of mastich branch.

Now, here's a lovely mouth wash recipe for you doves that's good to use before kissing your man *giggles* Cleopatra's Rose and Honey Mouth Wash

2 oz of dried red rose leaves

8 oz of rose-water

6 oz of clarified honey

Immerse the rose leaves in the water, and heat gently on the stove for two hours. Strain and add the honey. This is a very pleasant and useful wash/gargle for the mouth. It also soothes a sore throat.

And, an ideal wash for the mouth and teeth;

1 oz of camphor

1 pint of rectified spirit

Tincture of myrrh

10 drops of spearmint essential oil

This is an excellent and convenient wash for cleansing the teeth and for scenting the breath.

Non-Toxic Home Remedies: How to Treat Lice Naturally Without Harmful Chemicals

MAY 24, 2013 BY ANDREA 36 COMMENTSFrugally Sustainable's Tip for Treating Lice Naturally at Home

Lice.

If your family has experienced it…you know the agony that comes from trying to eliminate it.

However with patience and diligence head lice can be treated at home — without harmful chemicals – by using all-natural remedies.

What are lice?

Head lice are a common occurrence, easily transmitted, and NOT an indication of poor hygiene.

They are a type of parasite that lives on the scalp and hair shaft of humans — surviving for up to 30 days on small amounts of blood obtained from the individual. The official/medical term for head lice is pediculosis.

They are usually found in school-aged children (girls more frequently than boys) and women…and like to lay their eggs along the base of the hair shaft — close to the scalp — behind the ears and/or back of the neck.

They do not jump, hop, or fly…however they crawl at an extremely fast pace.

Lice do not spread disease.

What causes lice?

Head lice do not survive long (estimated 24-48 hours) once they fall off a person’s head and cannot feed.

Contracting lice happens to those who:

come in contact with an infected person through play, school, sports, home, sleepovers, etc.

wear the clothing of someone that has the parasite.

share personal care items such as…brushes, combs, towels, and other accessories that are contaminated.

lay on bedding, carpets, and/or furniture that a person with head lice was previously laying on.

Ultimately, if you or someone in your family develops head lice, you will want to take care of the problem as soon as you become aware.

What are the symptoms of a lice infestation?

Head lice affect all socio-economic groups. Infestations can happen and spread without regard to the cleanliness of a home or school, or to personal hygiene.

Infestation happens extremely fast, and can be asymptomatic (showing no symptoms of their presence). However, two of the most common signs and symptoms include:

itching of the head

red bumps on the scalp

The good news is…

…lice are easy to recognize.

You will usually be able to see the small, white eggs (nits) that are attached to the hair shaft. They produce a glue-like substance that makes them difficult to remove and they will not easily flake off if brushed.

Often the nits will be evident but the lice will not be visible.

The bad news is…

…lice are not so easy to prevent or get rid of.

Currently, pesticide-based lice treatments and insecticidal shampoos are coming under increasing scrutiny secondary to overuse. With the rise in superbugs – and growing pesticide resistance — using commercially-prepared, over-the-counter or prescription shampoos to attempt to treat and prevent head lice is not recommended.

This leaves us searching for a better way.

What can I do at home to treat and prevent lice naturally?

Common, conventional treatments (over-the-counter and prescription) such as: pyrethrins (permethrin lotion 1%), benzyl alcohol lotion, ivermectin lotion, malathion lotion, or lindane shampoo 1% – have been know to be harmful to human health, especially in the case of small children, and likewise harmful to the environment.

Nevertheless, there are proven, very effective natural remedies for lice that do not use harmful chemicals.

They are as follows:

Nit Comb. Use a fine-toothed nit comb to remove lice from the hair, working through the hair one small section at a time. Tea tree oil can also be applied directly to a fine-toothed comb and combed through dry hair with each brushing. Combing the hair at least 3 times a day for the first week — and then nightly for a week — will help to gradually remove eggs and newly hatched lice. This is one of the most effective ways of removing head lice without the use of insecticidal shampoos. Note: Make sure you clean out the lice comb by soaking it in vinegar for at least 30 minutes or by boiling it in water for 5-10 minutes.

Tea tree oil. This essential oil is an all-natural insecticide and an amazing treatment for head lice. To use: (a) add 3-5 drops of tea tree oil to every one ounce of natural shampoo (b) mix 3 tablespoons of carrier oil (olive, coconut, olive, coconut, jojoba, or sesame) and a teaspoon of tea tree oil together in a bowl…apply to hair for 30-45 minutes…shampoo normally. (c) add 10-20 drops directly into the washing machine when washing infected items. (d) add 15 drops to 2 ounces of water and spray onto hair while combing with a nit comb. Note: Do not apply tea tree oil directly to the scalp.

Neem Oil Shampoo. Neem oil, like tea tree oil, is also considered all-natural insecticide. Used by gardeners safely to prevent and kill pests on plants…it is just as safe and effective in the treatment of lice. Once a lice infestation is realized begin using a neem oil based shampoo — or add few teaspoons of neem oil to your normal shampoo. Note: Here is a recipe — Neem Oil Soap Recipe – for those interested in making your own Neem Oil Herbal Shampoo Bar. Or purchase a handmade Neem Oil Herbal Shampoo and Body by clicking this link.

Apple Cider Vinegar. Before and after shampooing, rinse your hair with vinegar…or soak hair with vinegar and leave it on for a few minutes before combing with a nit comb. Towel-dry hair. This will help remove nits from the hair shaft.

Healing Oil Treatment. High in anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and natural insecticide properties sesame seed and neem oils are the base for this healing oil treatment. Wisk together 1/4 cup of sesame seed oil, 1/8 cup neem oil, 1 teaspoon tea tree oil, 1/2 teaspoon of eucalyptus and rosemary essential oils, and 10 drops of Bulgarian lavender essential oils. Begin by rinsing the hair with apple cider vinegar and allow it to dry (this will help dissolve the glue-like substance produces by the nits). Apply healing oil treatment to the hair and scalp, cover with a shower cap, and leave-in for 6-8 hours or overnight. Use a fine-toothed nit comb to remove all the dead lice and nits. Shampoo normally. Apply this treatment every day for five days to eradicate lice.

Coconut oil. Just as with the above healing oil treatment…prior to applying coconut oil rinse the hair with apple cider vinegar and allow it to dry. Apply coconut oil to the hair, cover with a shower cap, and leave-in for 6-8 hours or overnight. Comb hair with a nit comb. Shampoo normally. Apply this treatment to the hair and scalp every day for five days to eradicate lice. Note: For a powerhouse treatment, add several drops of ylang-ylang and anise essential oils to the coconut oil prior to application.

Garlic. Grind 8 to 10 cloves of garlic all together to create a paste. Add in 2 to 3 teaspoons of lime juice or water (if using water add 10-15 drops of tea tree oil) and apply this to the scalp. Leave in this paste for ½ hour and rinse out thoroughly.

Thyme. Prepare a strong herbal infusion using either fresh or dried thyme leaves and flowers. Use this preparation as a rinse or spray onto hair while combing with a nit comb multiple times a day.

Essential oils. Add any of these essential oils you have on hand to a carrier oil (such as olive, coconut, jojoba, or sesame) and apply to hair — using the same method as with the coconut oil and healing oil treatment — to kill lice: tea tree oil, lavender, neem, rosemary, clove, eucalyptus, anise, cinnamon leaf, red thyme, peppermint, nutmeg or ylang-ylang

Additional measures that must be followed:

According to the CDC, lice and their eggs are killed by exposure for 5 minutes to temperatures greater than 53.5°C (128.3°F). Note: Personal items such as hats, grooming aids, and towels that come in contact with the hair of an infested person should never be shared.

Machine wash and dry clothing, stuffed animals, bed linens, hats, towels, and other items that the infested person wore or used during the 2 days before treatment using the hot water (130°F) laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle. Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry-cleaned or sealed in a plastic bag and stored for 2 weeks.

Soak combs and brushes in hot water (at least 130°F) for 5-10 minutes.

Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay.

Note

-After each treatment, check the hair and comb with the nit comb every 2-3 days to decrease the risk of re-infestation.

-Continue to check hair for 2-3 weeks to be sure all lice and nits are gone.

-See a trained medical professional for proper diagnosis and treatment of head lice and/or if any concerns arise.

Brewer's Yeast & Greek Yogurt Facial Scrub...

20:28 Jul 22 2015
Times Read: 394

I love a facial scrub that not only removes dead skin, but feels refreshing as well. The brewer's yeast in this scrub will help stimulate your circulation while the Greek yogurt refreshes your face. The brown sugar, of course, is the perfect exfoliant.

Unfortunately, this scrub won't keep in the refrigerator, so use it up as you make it.

Ingredients

1 1/2 tbsp brewer's yeast in powdered form

2 teaspoons brown sugar

2 teaspoons Greek yogurt, plain

1 teaspoon honey (warm honey so it's "runny" by placing it in a warm water bath)

Mix the ingredients together in a bowl.

To Use

Apply mixture in a circular motion to face and neck. Leave it on for a few minutes.

Rinse with a warm washcloth and pat skin dry.

Apply moisturizer to cleansed, scrubbed skin.

Oatmeal Scrub for the Face...

20:27 Jul 22 2015
Times Read: 395

I love a good facial scrub and this one works for all skin types. It includes almost all the ingredients in your kitchen: egg, milk, brown sugar, oatmeal and more.

If you don't use it all at once, this scrub needs to be refrigerated and it will last a few days in the refrigerator.

Ingredients

1 cup oatmeal (not the instant kind) ground up in a food processor or coffee mill

1 tbsp brown sugar (you can use white refined sugar if you don't have brown sugar on hand)

1 teaspoon sweet almond oil (my favorite, but you can substitute coconut or even olive oil)

2 tbsp regular milk (no fat-free here, please!)

The whites of one egg (you can use the whole egg if you please)

Recipe

The oatmeal really needs to be ground up finely to be useful in a scrub. I like to use a food processor for this.

Place all the ingredients in a bowl and mix together. If the consistency isn't spreadable, add a few more drops of oil.

To Use

Apply in a circular motion to face and neck. If you need more brown sugar, add it in. Your goal is to exfoliate the dead skin on your face.

Rinse with a warm washcloth.

20:15 Jul 22 2015
Times Read: 398

Make your own natural and effective chocolate mask with this easy chocolate mask recipe. Chocolate, being one of the most irresistible delicacies on earth, can also revolutionize your skin! Due to the unbelievable antioxidant and nutritious properties of cacao, the mask can effectively prevent premature aging and make your skin truly radiant. Raw cacao beans contain more than 320 various antioxidants. No other product in the world can be compared to it. These antioxidants fight free radicals in our body and protect against viral and bacterial infections.

Why is it the Most Effective Chocolate Mask?

For this mask you will need raw unsweetened cacao powder, raw organic honey, avocado, and cinnamon.

Cacao is, perhaps , the greatest for your skin as the antioxidants contained in it boost collagen protection.

Honey preserves natural oils in the skin, causing it to become elastic and silky.

Avocado is one of the best anti-aging foods. It prevents and helps eliminate wrinkles. D-manno-heptulose sugar contained in avocados boosts collagen formation.

Cinnamon is a superfood because it contains a large quantity of useful substances, as well as the unique essential oil (which is an effective natural tonic).

These tantalizing ingredients will nourish and deep cleanse your skin, leaving it softer and smoother. And best of all, it will put botox and other surgical procedures to shame. Remember, the key to success – consistency. As a sweet bonus, this mask smells as good as you would think it does. Imagine putting a melted chocolate bar all over your face – you will feel like licking it off!

Ingredients

1 mashed avocado

3 tablespoons of raw cacao powder

2 teaspoons of raw honey

1 tablespoons of cinnamon.

Directions

Mix all the ingredients up

Gently massage the mixture onto your face and leave it on for about 25 minutes.

Rinse the mask off with warm water.

Times Read: 400

Using natural ingredients to make your own mineral salt deodorant spray is empowering! It may sound silly, but doesn’t it feel good to make your own body care products? I always feel a bit liberated =)

The ingredients used have great properties–

How to make your own deodorant spray

• Organic witch hazel- Astringent, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and soothing. Italso prevents razor burn, an added bonus for us ladies!

• Essential oils- Highly antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal. Essential oils prevent odor but can also mask it when in already exists.

• Baking soda- Known for its superb odor control. Nuff said!

• Grapefruit seed extract- Kills odor causing bacteria like no one’s business.

• Himalayan salt- Salt is known for its antibacterial properties. It inhibits the growth of odor causing bacteria.

How to make your own deodorant spray

What You’ll Need-

• Pink himalayan salt or high quality sea salt

• Aluminum free baking soda

• Your favorite essential oil

• 1-2 drops grapefruit seed extract (for extra antibacterial oomf)

• Organic witch hazel

• 1 4oz spray bottle

• A small bowl

• A spoon

• A small funnel

Where to Buy Essential Oils

Instructions-

how to make your own deodorant spray

• Measure 2 tsp himalayan salt and ¼ tsp aluminum free baking soda and put them in the bowl

• Add 4-5 TB organic with hazel

• Mix well with a spoon to dissolve as much of the salt and baking soda as possible

• Let the solution settle (you want to avoid getting any sediment into your final product)

• Pour the solution into your spray bottle

• Add 20-24 drops of your essential oil (you can use any blend of oils to create lovely fragrances)

• Add 1-2 drops grapefruit seed extract

• Cap tightly and shake well

To Use-

• Shake well before each use (you want those essential oils to get mixed in)

• Spray 3 or more times under each arm (make sure you really get it on there)

• Re-apply as needed

Please note:

• When you apply this deodorant, it will smell mostly like witch hazel for a few minutes until it dries. Once dry, it will smell like the essential oils you’ve used.

• It can sting a bit if you have just shaved your underarms

This deodorant works best on freshly washed underarms but I have had good results with re-application. Generally, its deodorizing properties last about 12 hrs.

How To Naturally Get Rid of Canker Sores...

19:50 Jul 22 2015
Times Read: 405

Canker Sores are so very painful and common especially in children and young adults. I posted this as it does work and thought I would share.

So to naturally get rid of canker sores, you can use Alum Powder, a common spice found in most kitchens. Here is how!

Follow these steps to naturally get rid of canker sores:

Place a small amount of alum (about a size of a pea) directly onto the canker sore.

Allow it to sit on the canker sore for 60 seconds. It does not taste good, it is quite bitter. Do not swallow the alum!

After 60 seconds spit out your saliva and the alum. DO NOT RINSE YOUR MOUTH WITH WATER! Within several minutes to 24 hours the pain will disappear.

The ulcer may stay for a day or two after you treat the canker sore, but the pain will be gone. If the pain is not gone after 24 hours, reapply the alum with a second application and repeat the steps above.

That’s it! So easy and effective. Next time you have a canker sore be sure to try this method out!

Source: http://www.medicinenet.com/canker_sores/article.htm

Disclaimer: Use this home remedy at your own risk. Like nutmeg and cinnamon, ingesting one ounce or more of alum is considered toxic to humans. Not recommended for women pregnant or nursing and kids. Consult your physician before trying home remedies.

Nourishing Pumpkin Face Mask... for Men and Women

19:44 Jul 22 2015
Times Read: 406

Pumpkin contains natural enzymes that exfoliate skin dissolving away impurities and embedded oils that cause comedones, milia and sluggish skin. Regular use of this mask will help you skin to regenerate and breathe, especially for skin that is over 25 years old. Anti-Aging at its best.

1/4 Cup Canned Organic Pumpkin

3/4 Cup Spring Water

1/2 Cup Rolled Oats

2 Tablespoons Honey

1/2 teaspoon Rose Hip Seed Oil

1 Drop Clove Bud Essential Oil

1 Drop Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil

1 Drop Nutmeg Essential Oil

For the application you'll also need a 6" x 6" square of Cheese Cloth

This mask is loaded with Vitamins C and A, excellent skin 'food'. The Oats are very soothing and softening to the skin, while the Honey has humectant properties and add much-needed hydration. Mature skin will especially love the benefits of this all-natural mask!

The directions below are general instructions on how to make and use this mask. The 3 essential oils above can be irritating to sensitive skin so caution is advised. When they are used in the very small amounts advised here, they lend a gorgeous Pumpkin Pie scent that lingers on the skin after the mask is removed. Do not add a larger amount of these essential oils just because you enjoy the scent, stick to the amount advised. If you have very sensitive skin you may want to avoid their use completely. Organic ingredients are always optimal, but of course not mandatory.

Brown Sugar Scrub for Face and Body...

19:19 Jul 22 2015
Times Read: 412

Ahhhh, the basic brown sugar scrub. There really isn't a better natural exfoliant than brown sugar (in my beauty expert opinion). It doesn't tear at the skin like oatmeal or salt can do and it takes delicious if it somehow makes it's way into your mouth.

This scrub is simple, basic and very, very popular. If you don't have brown sugar on hand, you can use a basic refined white sugar. Make as little or as much as you want.

Ingredients

1/2 cup manuka honey (or plain honey if you have no idea what manuka honey is)

1/2 cup brown sugar (basic refined white sugar works in a pinch)

1 tbsp olive or coconut oil

1 drop of your favorite essential oil (lavender, jasmine, rose, geranium, bergamot are all nice)

Recipe

Mix ingredients in a bowl.

To Use

Apply mixture to skin and massage in a circular motion to ensure you're removing dead skin from your face. Rinse with warm water and press skin with a warm washcloth (my favorite part of a scrub).

Apply moisturizer to cleansed, scrubbed skin.

2 tbsp brown sugar

1 tbsp sweet almond oil

1 tbsp manuka honey (or regular honey if you don't have manuka).

Recipe

Mash the fruit together until it's in a pulp. Add the other ingredients and combine well.

To Use

Apply mixture to skin and leave on for a few minutes. Rinse with warm water and press skin with a warm washcloth (my favorite part of a mask or scrub).

Apply moisturizer to cleansed skin.

Easy Homemade Foaming Hand Soap

18:15 Jul 22 2015
Times Read: 416

I used to buy foaming hand soap but once I discovered how to make it this incredibly easy way for a whole lot less money, I was thrilled. This recipe is so easy you will be mad you haven’t made your own before. This homemade foaming hand soap has only three ingredients and one is readily available from your faucet!

You can add whatever scent you prefer for each room because this recipe is for small batches.

Ingredients

1/3 cup Liquid unscented Castile soap

2/3 cup filtered water

1/8 tsp essential oil (I use lavender, Thieves, peppermint, or lemon)

Equipment You’ll Need

These 8 oz. square Mason glass jars. Why? I love them because they are cute and retro looking but also modern and they also have handy 1/3 cup measuring lines on them.

You can find a lot of different foaming pumps that fit mason jars.

Directions

Pour the Castile soap and the essential oil into the jar and stir to combine. Fill the jar the rest of the way up with water. Screw on the lid and pump away!

Now wasn’t that easy peasy? I make these with different scents for each jar. I like lavender, Thieves, or peppermint in our bathrooms and use lemon in the kitchen. Rosemary and Sage are wonderful as well!

**These also make wonderful gifts...

How to Make Homemade Hand Scrub

18:12 Jul 22 2015
Times Read: 417

Want to get soft hands? Yeah, me too. I’ve often heard that nothing gives away your age more than your hands. But expensive hand creams aren’t the answer. They can be loaded with chemical fillers and they always ignore a vital step in getting soft hands: exfoliation. Instead, fight dry, cracked winter hands with a food-based homemade scrub formulated especially for your hands!

Ingredients:

1 tbsp coconut oil

2 tbsp raw honey

1/4 cup sea salt

1/4 cup organic sugar

1 tbsp lemon juice

Instructions:

1. Stir together the honey and coconut oil in a medium bowl.

2. In another small bowl, blend the salt, sugar and lemon juice until it becomes crumbly.

3. Pour the salt mixture over the honey mixture and stir until smooth.

4. Store in a small glass storage container.

Directions for Use:

1. Gently massage a marble-sized amount of homemade hand scrub into your hands for 30-60 seconds. (Don’t forget to exfoliate between your fingers!)

2. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. The coconut oil provides enough moisture so you probably won’t need to follow up with anything else. If your hands are extra dry, you might want to apply some homemade whipped coconut oil.

3. Repeat 1-2 times per week.

Mint Chocolate Whipped Body Butter Recipe... Soothing and Cooling

18:04 Jul 22 2015
Times Read: 421

Yields about 1 1/2 cups of whipped body butter

Ingredients you need:

1/2 cup cocoa butter

1/2 cup coconut oil

20 – 40 drops peppermint essential oil

Equipment:

A stand mixer is the best tool for this recipe. I personally use my KitchenAid Classic Stand Mixer and its whisk attachment for whipped body butter recipes

A hand mixer will also work, but it may require a little more muscle and patience. A blender or food processor may not work because they will get too warm, which can prevent the oil from whipping up properly.

Instructions:

1. Add coconut oil and cocoa butter to your mixing bowl.

You actually want the cocoa butter in a solid state for it to whip up, so I used a butter knife to get my cocoa butter into the mixing bowl.

Alternately (and for a super smooth, clump-free body butter) you can melt the coconut oil and cocoa butter together over the stove, then cool the mixture in the fridge until they are mostly solid. I personally found this step unnecessary, but then I don’t really mind a bump of cocoa butter in my body butter now and then.

2. Sprinkle about 20-40 drops of peppermint essential oil on top, depending on how strong you’d like the peppermint aroma (and cooling effect) to be. I personally used about 40 drops.

3. Every 1-2 minutes, stop the mixer and scrape the sides of the bowl. This helps mix it up nice and smooth. Mix for a total of about 8 minutes to get this body butter perfectly whipped and airy.

4. Scoop your mint chocolate whipped body butter into a jar or glass storage container. I first made this several weeks ago, have used it almost every day since, and I still have about 1/4 jar left!

Homemade BEST EVER Facial Serum Recipe...

17:43 Jul 22 2015
Times Read: 427

1 drop Rose Essential Oil*

2 drops Sandalwood Essential Oil*

2 drops Frankincense Essential Oil*

1 oz carrier oil of your choice (I use avocado oil, many like jojoba oil)

**For very dry, aging skin you can use Cocnut Oil, first pressed cold pressed organic Spectrum is a good one found at most supermarkets. Cost? 9.99 per jar!

*I buy therapeutic grade essential oils

Directions

Add essential oils to a 1 oz amber bottle fitted with a glass dropper. Pour in the carrier oil you are using. I personally use avocado oil as the carrier oil for my face. It works well with my skin. If you prefer another carrier then use that.

So how is this only $0.01 per drop?

Let’s break it down.

Homemade Face Serum Cost Analysis

At $185.50 per 5 ml bottle of Rose (wholesale price), each drop of Rose essential oil is $2.32!

A 15 ml bottle of Frankincense is $71.75 comes out to about $0.26 per drop.

A 5 ml bottle of Sandalwood will run you about $89.75 wholesale and comes out to about $1.12 per drop.

A 16 oz bottle of avocado oil is about $12.50 or $0.78 per ounce.

So a 1 oz bottle of my homemade face serum will run you about $5.87! There are about 550 drops in a 1 oz bottle of oil. So each drop is $0.01! If you use 5 drops per day your daily usage is just $0.05. So how does this work out in terms of your annual costs? I figure I will use about 3.3 bottles of this homemade face serum in a years time. Oh about $20 for a whole years worth! For real!

How do your fancy face creams and serum costs from the store sound right now? Why not use something completely natural?!

And as for using up a bottle of Rose quickly and needing to buy another…At this rate you wouldn’t use your whole bottle of Rose for over 20 years although I am sure you will find other uses for it once you have it. But my savvy friend gave me this other tip: Rose is super potent. There is no need to use it neat. She always dilutes 1 drop to 1 oz of carrier and then uses it that way drop by drop. So let’s all be serious – who thinks a bottle of Rose is expensive now?!

Rose Water: Ancient Secrets to so many Beauty Regimes:

16:43 Jul 22 2015
Times Read: 437

Rose-water

The benefits of rose-water are touted. But it can be an expensive item to buy and thankfully this article offers up a homemade recipe for this beauty essential.

“Rose-water may be made by taking half an ounce of powdered white sugar and two drachms of magnesia; with these mix twelve drops of attar of roses. Add a quart of water and two ounces of alcohol, mixed in a gradual manner, and filter through blotting paper.”

Yellow roses

Let us offer a translation: a drachm is an antiquated unit of measurement. In modern terms, a drachm is 1/8 of an ounce, so in our recipe you’ll want to add 1/4 ounce of magnesia (magnesium).

Attar of roses goes by a plethora of names: rose oil, essence of rose, or otto of rose. It is a very fragrant, but essentially colorless liquid. We did find a recipe

for attar of roses.

Attar of roses means the volatile oil contained inside the fresh petals. It is used in making rose water and scented perfumes. Use only fresh petals that have been picked in the morning after the dew has evaporated but before the strong afternoon sun has warmed them:)

YIELD

1-2 oz.

UNITS

US

2 -3 cups fresh rose petals, and leaves gently washed

coarse salt, such as kosher or rock salt, as required

DIRECTIONS

Pat dry the rose petals and leaves between a layer of cotton towels or paper towels.

Place a layer of petals inside a clean ceramic crock or dark-coloured glass jar.

Over each layer, sprinkle a thin covering of salt.

Repeat until the crock or jar is full.

Cover the container tightly.

Place in a cool and dark place for 3-6 weeks.

The salt extracts the moisture from the petals and leaves, which should collect in the bottom of your jar.

Strain the liquid through a coffee filter or several layers of cheesecloth.

This is the wonderful scented attar of roses for you.

To make fresh rose water, add a drop or two of this oil to 1 cup of distilled water.

ENJOY!
